I. Yeah. This is the financial exchange we've Barry Armstrong. This threw to first street stay on top of breaking business news and learn how to manage your money to help you towards a more secure future and now broadcasting live from the insurer mention Doug Johns studios it's the financial exchange with your host. Barry Armstrong. Well the big question is can we make it three days in a row stock market has eked out gains on Monday and Tuesday. It's now Wednesday. There only are we gonna get three in a row that's a big question trucks ought to how do you weigh in on this markets up a little. It's a little bit right now I think God's view this has been a week where we haven't had a ton of news that's come out some always a little skeptical. Of rallies that happen. With out any major news so I take a look at look at you know some some things that you know potentially point to gain today. You did have who's the fed governor that came out this morning and said they were expecting to continue to keep rates low for a few years I can't remember who was. But I had a lot of different conversations going on from differently Kaplan who's the Harvard guy going down to Texas yup he he saying he wants to normalize rates for hikes Larry Summers. Com and out Sam Nunn and you don't need to raise rates has been affected should raise rates last year and they should raise rates anymore and you know the market shock the market I think if you look at with the way that doctor Paul make the markets game. Wagering on to cut our two hikes this year than. That's that's pretty much what you're seeing priced in right now. But if if you look at where this started here's here's another data point when you try to figure out where this market is going right now. You look at where this started which is over in China with the Shanghai index Shanghai index just closed down below 3000. For the first time now I've believed since last August okay. ID gunned down debt that far back in August of last year rallied back a little bit but it's back down at those blows right now so I think. Testing Nat and it's going to be very interesting to see what happens there if it reaches those lows is there's some room to run then there's some room to run if it does go through there. Larry. You know yesterday we reported on the jolts report and in. We we need to acknowledge this is a report where you're looking in the rear view mirror jolts as the job opening. Survey that is conducted once a month but the challenges we get in January you get the data from the month of November. And we reported that there are five point four million jobs that are open across the country what we did not report we probably should have. Is that two point eight billion Americans left their jobs. In the month of November of last year that's that's I look at that as being a very bullish indicator in many ways term because. You don't quit your job in this one you're retiring or two you think you can find another job or perhaps he party secured other important. Yeah and it's definitely true that when you look at it in terms of what it means for the economy right now too good sign people feel more comfortable they feel like things are. In such a way in such a place that they're able to go out and potentially get a new job. What I would always concerns me about this is you know we we talk about these statistics where we say okay we have the you know the highest rate of you know highest in employment rate since 2070 say get the highest rate of voluntary quit since 2007 or 2006. Alec back and say. We got that means there's more that can go wrong. Is that that's that's that's kind of how I look at because we know those trends aren't sustainable for a. We you know it deeply if you go back tow truck if you go back to say 2009. Or or or even 2010. For every person that. Is looking for a job right you're you're out of work you've lost your job may be used to work it. You know aid in the company ghostly and off and you're in the banking industry the mortgage industry back in 2000 laid off. Back then in 2009 if you apply for a job there you're competing with as many as six other people. Today when you apply for a job your early competing with one and half people meaning that for every. Ten jobs there are fifteen applicant's total for those fifty those ten jobs so. I am not trying to look exclusively. Through rose colored glasses but it does. Bear well. It it's positive for people that are looking at work to your point though is it does demonstrate what you look back at that data point historically. Is it indicates that you kind of topped out and that things are about to get much worse. And that's what I would what I worry about when I see this because any time that you say well this is the best it's been since this time you say well. Yeah but that time we'll go what happened after that. It's for a unit that that that the times when people typically have the highest upside it's not when things are at the best since the previous high it's kind of in the middle of that run which you go back east OK maybe 2013 2014. Is where you're saying you've got a few years to run here. And I simply look at it. And look there's no doubt that what we are seeing in markets and in the world economy is spurred on largely by two factors we talk about oil with OPEC opening up and saying look we're gonna pump everything that we can't. And you also talk about China with the problems they're having. At some point though you know you talk about what the what the net effect is there he hasn't deflation that's exported to the US which means that you know in it it'd. In an economy that is built by borrowing to expand you got it expanded that type of environment. You know five await suggesting that this type of environment will be good for US markets because he'd be to a flight to quality there's something to be set for. You if you're east Saudi hedge fund or if you're a British pension fund. Where you feel a lot safer investing in the United States that you might in China or Taiwan or even Australia where it you know sound company country. So I think there is something to be said for flight to quality United States being that quality. No doubt about it the we've talked a lot. In the last couple weeks about the comparison to the Asian financial crisis back in 1997 and 1998. Even with that you did still seat. A 20% dip in US markets it recovered pretty quickly recovered in about three months after that. But you did see that and so it's a case where you do still see the impact spelled domestically in the US but they tend to be a little bit. Quicker and a little bit less far reaching simply because you do have that flight to quality it's somewhat. Hey Tucker did you buy that. New album from David Boeing black star I haven't bought it yet but I heard a couple songs pretty good so far. It's sold out. And I imagine I mean it was just released Friday and he died on what Monday and believe now is the the sold out and the year suggesting. That it might out sell at Dell's 25 remember as Dell's 25. Sold they tied it. How much are they asking for police album you know I'll look it up. Look it up but today I'd be curious but NATO it you could by the deal problem. Eight dollars and so it had tremendous sales volume but David goalies album if you go to Amazon. And you try to buy that now today you can't get it AD and and I know it. And Amazon attic cure. So voted yes so black star. Which is the near resolve. Audio CD is 1198. On Amazon. If Jordan downloaded it 99. 899 just down correct. All right it costs almost nothing to open it strictly did you read this story check in business insider though I was submitted an application after reading that headline I'll tell you that much. 101000 dollars so let's say you you you're in the restaurant business and your experience you know how to run one of these. A franchise that you work for McDonald's as a manager for five years you could go to chick filet. With 101000 dollars and no additional capital and open a chick fully franchise sounds very attractive. Yet typically has much lower upfront cost than what you see from companies such as mcdonalds or you talk about Taco Bell McDonald's typically. The initial fees up front can generally be anywhere between a million and about 2.3 million dollars from taco bill typically as start up costs that are anywhere between about one point two and 2.5 million. But chick filet the way they make this up. Is on the back weekend and what they do is they charge you a little bit more actually a lot more in some cases to own and operate in the long run. Even though the upfront costs are lower so it's it's simply as a matter of whether you want to pay that money up front or whether you want to pay it. As a percentage of sales as you go but one way or another they are going to collect that franchise revenues. But chuck. Let me ask you Europe big fast food I got Arby's Wendy's McDonald's. KFC chick filet. In my vicinity. You Burger King you covered the big ones I mean you can go forever but I think that was the major ones Wendy's. Yes so. You two guys that are fast food guys which of those fast food restaurants what would be your favor. The that I you got what else chip it's chick filet and down. So talking you know electrical area did not try I just try to for the first time last week I just had a couple markets I can't really judge it by all you got what I'm here and which Mandela say how much you've got to have this and which took well look Wendy's is actually Michael second Wendy's is my favorite burger place but equally there's something about that chick in the way they make it. I'll tell you it is. Absolutely outstanding and yet the waffle Fries there to the nuggets are pretty good but then you get the dipping sauces and everything it's it's outstanding outsize. Our text number is 68680. What is your favorite. Fast food restaurant often no shocks clearly in line with chick filet Tucker voting for war. Wendy's and I am kind of the McDonald's apple fashion but I thought to know yours naturally would I would like he'd do if you don't mind. Text us at 68680. Which is your favorite fast group food restaurant I named off probably half a dozen or so. But if and fight this one just throw wooden throw it and there. But what's your favorite fast food. You know we're not gonna obviously can you legal seafood is not fast food we're talking. You know your way in the future your sub ten dollar meals is is chick filet under ten bucks for a meal truck. Did oh yeah I mean it's it's easily under ten bucks you talk if you're doing. You know basic chicken sandwich and Fries and and even if you tossed the drink you're probably talking somewhere the 78 dollar range. We'll 686 cities are tech's number just let me know if you don't mind what your favorite fast food restaurant it is. Its financial exchange at your fingertips. Well. Thanks 686. Debut it's the financial exchange on the financial exchange radio network. Record auto sales seen 2050. Maybe at another record. In points sixty. Yet auto stocks had sold off an awful lot during the last twelve months. Joining us to help understand why that selloff has occurred is mr. Jeff Green from Bloomberg by Jeff Dario. Good morning a review. It that so. Help us understand you know I I yield shares of GM might bought it for the dividend largely but I also but the stock would go up the price it hasn't happened why it. Wire auto stocks. Not performing well. It's sort of never ending story for the started. To get anybody to believe that the future is going to be better than the pass or deep nobody invests and we've already done yours investing in the expectations. It is really hard to get people to see. Traditional auto maker went the first humanist companies like Tesla in existence is having this long future so there's always the hesitation has been. Of the bankruptcies didn't help Skype account approved a lot of people's. Suspicions that these are really fragile companies and so even now with a record profits record sales all the indications that there in your state. People are a little wary of the stock and that it makes it really rocked for anybody who's pushing the stocks. Now I read a story in the New York Times last week suggesting that auto sales will decline by 60%. Because we will old RO cars is that contributing if it right be because the guys that are making these big wagers are guys like Brian Tennessee. At Alpine funds in a guy manages four billion dollars that he's suggesting. Bet the peak number that we are seeing in fifteen and sixteen is exactly that AP number its only gonna go down from there. Well that's sort of the timing is always to question. You know we wrote a story couple years ago we call it peak car. Topic ourselves stop but the globally they would top out in the hundred million plus range. And trying to hang mayor because of the security and the people who become harsher and there'd be congestion in the big cities in the around the world that sort of thing where everybody's moving. Issue is how long is that gonna be you know along you're trading your blessings are probably talk in 20/20 five before you have any kind of reasonable technology that can. Make a lot of the stuff we're coming right sharing barge itself as a which hears people it's automated cars and ride sharing. And all the very technologies that are really really efficient so that you can put three people in one vehicle that drives itself for me before. And you don't need a car and to get to work those sort of things it would really make it scary which makes stocks like Tesla and mobilized more attractive. He's. Does that you know looking at you know GM's price earnings ratio was six point three. Pick for it was like nine point three AutoNation eleven point I mean you look at the pricing of the east are. Irate that story about every two and half you know her desk. I could just you know but if you just looked at PE. And none of these stocks make any sense split. It's still hole it it's all about. Attitudes and mind and and you know looking at the future they just can't get people to believe they're here and stated GM is actually put Jones up today because. They give a forecast that's more optimistic and they did some stuff with their dividend. But does things they've done in the last week or so of the kindest thing to do auto makers need to keep doing that partnered with lift and now they're talking about. You know bring it out of electric vehicle between the Tesla. That's what people are afraid of is these guys because the buggy whip makers of of your demeanor is that we're there hasn't. You know is it possible for your purview is it possible to determine. Which company has a lead like I was very intrigued by Jake GM's investment in the list last week that they put 500 million bucks in the list. Is that do you look at any of these auto companies and say what GM or Ford has a significant hit starter maybe it's Tesla. Has a significant headstart in the east autonomous car. Segments. Well the big question is how much cash you have to do this I mean castles perennial problem is do they have enough cash to its really really expensive. To sustain a car companies because she's not only have to develop new model which you have to keep upgrading your current models if you look at what happened to Tesla. They tend to have their role models drop off to to bring in newer models that don't have don't have eighteen car models that you can buy like that major manufacturers do. So it's it's always a question of we have enough cash to invest. In all the different technologies that nobody knows what technology is gonna win that would be fuel cells will be electric cars will be hybrid. Will be something we haven't thought of yet that's why saying. That's CAD company formerly known as Chrysler. Is looking for a partner that's one theory is because it's really expensive to make all these bats. Yelled yeah it is it is he could end up with what it's all said and done worldwide you might have. Two or three car companies considered a goat if cards are gonna go from a hundred million a year to forty million. A year why he needed doesn't car companies. And there's always that series that Google or apple just subcontract. Commodity of building that show what goes around the technology to these car companies in the will be just another commodity. Company. You know I hear you bring up some great points thank you very much we appreciate your joining extra. And interaction. That's Jeff Green from Bloomberg you know at the the other part of that whole equation chuck is you've got apple. Developing this car division right. And you've got Google. Simultaneously. Developing this Kart division but Google seems to be using an open architecture. Where is apple everything is Clint just yet. In a pretty much speaks to. How those two companies operate in general apple likes to have a very tight control over their ecosystem. They like to make sure that everything is set up exactly how they like it. Where is Google goes out. And pretty much cool takes the Canada IBM architecture you know from from PCs back in the eighties where they say look. Anyone who wants to can use this you can do it in any way that you want. And it doesn't matter to us as long as we get market share that's it's kind of the other two companies have operated apples that look. We are content to have smaller marketshare but higher margins because people pay for our brand where is Google says. We just one market share will have more people paying less and that's fine for us because we have other things that we specialize in like search. That allow people to that allows to make money in different ways. Very here's trivia question for you what baseball team did Michael Jordan signed a contract with after retiring. The financial exchanges on Twitter follow me right now pat TLC show this is the financial exchange on the financial exchange radio network. So Michael Jordan retired from the UN BA on this date in 1999. And he signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox. To plea professional baseball and I think he probably wasn't season chucked it may be single layer double fault that they. There wasn't a was the best baseball player out there but he did still. Give it a go at least and Chris from midfield had the right answer their Chris is taking home a mug. With their rumored that the and be able leak that forced him out because he'd been cut game panel rose yep gambling. Yet this is a it's it's something that I think you know he's been a guy who's been known to gamble quite a bit and there's a lot of vol lot of talk that's why he was pushed out there. Is that urban legend Doherty believe that the old team. I am I'm probably around 5050 I think there's probably some fire behind that I don't know exactly what it is. Other story its breaking CNBC reporting. That GE has made the decision. To leave. Fairfield County Connecticut or Greenwich Connecticut and moved to Boston Massachusetts. This is exciting news for Boston not so exciting for Connecticut. Yet this is a story that was first broken up by the Boston Globe actually. And it essentially looks like the announcement is gonna come on Thursday morning. That GE is going to be moving its headquarters to Boston and we have speculated about this quite a bit just because GE had moved a couple other units both to Cambridge as well as out in the west Borough south Borough. Areas well I health unit as well as a and analytic unit. And you look at it and for the city of Boston me if you're Charlie Baker and Marty Walsh right now. You've got to be taking a victory lap at your office I mean this is this is big news for both of them here. But they couldn't does to real estate values to you know you're talking about 600. Pretty highly compensated workers battery good either relocate. Or people are gonna gain jobs Wiki. You know you may have somebody who's 64 years old and says while not moving to Boston. Yeah right that you're gonna have a lot of the executives that are in their forties and thirties and even their fifties. We're going to be excited. It took moved to Boston lower cost of living. And the day I was looking at a chart track you've got to see how many executives there are in the GE home office that make over a million dollars a year. Is that right big. It. It's really number yeah I mean this is this is going to be 88 it's it's a game changer just image wise for Boston gives you think about Boston in the last. Ten to fifteen years there's been a number of companies that have moved headquarters. Out of boss here or ship jobs out out of Boston in the Boston area. And to be able to lowered GE which I believe is either seventh or eighth in terms of largest company. In the world. You know that this is a huge move there rather large company in the US and sorry. But that is that is just a massive move there. Four Boston and does the whole state of Massachusetts because remember. GE yes they're moving their headquarters to Boston but again they're putting up I think 800 people. Out in west Borough right now so. I think this is a sign that look you're gonna see some additional jobs from other divisions. Coming into the dead than did the Boston area is well not just in Boston but the surrounding towns it could be wired and. But why people like I looked at Boston and and by the way I leaked the story. Last August because I had a friend using commercial real estate that told me it was gonna happen. A lot of people gave me heat about that these notes and it happens every now. With the more I guess will be announced that it's actually happening that. I look at Boston beauty you know you're familiar with Fairfield County I mean it's a guest and affluent area. There's a lot of talent that's available in Fairfield counties so. It is as enthusiastic. About this as I am. I've thinking they're moving here for access to the colleges and universities because of the transformation that this company's collector of a. I have to think that's true and in particular you know you talk about another division that they have invested heavily in in the Boston area with a division of GE health that's gone into Kendall Square in Cambridge. They don't have to figure there's gonna be a lot more happening in that area that Kendall Square area in general. You talk about innovation that's going on there and I think that's what GE wants to be able to tap into they really want. To be more involved in that type of cutting edge high tech business that is coming out of those areas there. And in Fairfield County you absolutely have qualified people there's no doubt about it. But you don't have that hope of innovation like you do in Boston right now we're talking. Was on either Monday or Tuesday about how Massachusetts was essentially tied for Connecticut in first place for most innovative state. I think that's a major reason why you are supposed. I'd say how do. It was tied with California Connecticut was number five. And you know hey I don't mean to throw rocks that governor Daniel Malloy this falls on you in the U chased GE out of the state. And you know and Malloy. Has done. He chased a lot of good companies out of Connecticut that got a lot of friends and family that live in Connecticut that are disgusted with the governor Malloy because. You know magic cure you live in that area. Your property values and decline dramatically Europe's 600 people that are either retire and leave the company or they're gonna moved to Boston. Then a particular you'll get that happening at the same time. That I think a lot of people look out there and say. You know there's not necessarily a ton of growth in banking right now so you know the financial sector in that area of Connecticut isn't necessarily coming in just to swoop in. And pick up the pieces there right through it can be difficult for some of those towns there. Because remember. If if someone who was making two million dollars a year sells a three million dollar house there's a ton of buyers. You know it's threats you don't you don't just have those people come in and say OK now I'm gonna you know that that property is gonna it's gonna have a tough time moving when you talk about the sheer volume. Of houses that are gonna have to be sold there to be very difficult. In in some of those real estate markets. Connecticut this falls and you know we stole your company did you do it connected it to yourself. Tucker we did that little survey about fast food restaurants with her clear winner. Not really every ruse kind of all over the place and kind of not giving us a fast food places since. Instances I mean we seem Wendy's people ask about Panera Bread. I don't know if that counts woody thank. Now no openers not fast. Fast food is is greasy. Food that's bad for you that's gonna eat what you get a fast pretty units food you get it quickly and it's generally it's it's it's questionable of even food sometimes but you still like a taste so good in the makes you feel all laughter were I mean I think we missed subway Rita mentioned in the first place who seem that a few times in a surprisingly so yeah Wendy's with a few votes there but no really majority. I am winner here. You know the thing about strictly shock is there's not many of them in the Boston area and we've usually. Really Massachusetts. And at how many would there be you know brought ad in Rhode Island kinetic you know they just not a lot of if you having gone to a chick filet yeah it's I don't wanna see you haven't lived because you have but it hasn't been the same kind of life. But it's really crack out it isn't like I drive by own notes in a way that is. You gotta go I mean you don't wanna be going at noon just like you don't wanna be going to any restaurant at noon but you know generally. I try to go I'm usually trying to go maybe you know 1045 or 11 or 1 o'clock 130 and you're generally able to get in and out pretty quickly there. Eight the National Football League is allowing the St. Louis Rams to relocate their franchise to Los Angeles. Yes it's. Move that I think a lot of people expected after the rams owner Stan crock he came out on Monday. And pretty much wrote a scathing critique of Saint Louis that pretty much wouldn't of allowed him to take that team. Back to Saint Louis actually. From my perspective. I look at this. And it bothers me when people who have billions of dollars hold cities hostage to try to get you know a couple hundred million for a stadium that you know the city your state has to issue bonds and so forth and taxpayers and upon the hook. I I don't like that in so in general I. I have negative feelings about this move I think it'll be good for the NFL as a whole is LA obviously huge media market but I. I do not like the idea of public dollars for private stadiums not one bit. Now is San Diego going to move in and be partners with the state has croc he owns. A huge tract of land in Carson I believe it is. And he's got. Plans to develop the stadium. And it'll be open I think in time for maybe eighteen seasons but I mean what what's that because I know Oakland and San Diego want to move there and share state. So this is actually the proposal that was except it was Inglewood proposed. And with this one the way they've structured it San Diego has a year essentially. To figure out if they want to be part of this deal and if they want to negotiate a lease with the rams for part of that stadium there and it's it's still up in the air as to whether or not they are going to move. No one really knows what's happening with the raiders right now the raiders lease with the city of Oakland. Is is up right now. So I heard there are hurt they're going to San Antonio. They they're talking about it but remember we all thought that the patriots we're going to Horford for a little while. And it turned out just to be a bargaining chip so it's it's hard to say at this point exactly what Oakland wants to do. Mark Davis who has the raiders owner has been pretty outspoken about wanting to remain in Oakland if possible but he just says their stadium situation. Is untenable and and it's one of the few situations where he's right the Oakland stadium. Always seats about 44000 and as minimal luxury boxes if it's not a stadium that's really up to code in the NFL one of the few times where I'll actually defend an owner and say he's right. But he is right on that. And it he remains to be seen exactly what they're going to do. Because the NFL said they would give him a hundred million dollars. Towards the cost of the new stadium but the he has to stay in northern California. Exactly and and I don't think you look at the the county government there NC government. They don't wanna be tossing any money at that project and that's why it's it's very uncertain exactly what's gonna happen there. Whether they and the playing there with the talk about San Antonio I mean now at this point keep in mind you do have a Saint Louis you know a hole in Saint Louis rush Saint Louis come back and say you know what we're gonna go after the raiders it's you know there's there are a lot of different options here. That are on the table. Wow well it it's a lot of moving. A lot of moving parts as it relates to the National Football League. Are coming up we will be joined by. Market updates come your way right here it is a financial exchange in the financial exchange radio network. Time for stock talk on the financial exchange we are joined by Andrew lane from Morningstar. And Andhra preceded joining us. It and you're talking about Alcoa here company that reported earnings. About a day and a half ago now and what exactly do we see from Alcoa here I know that obviously to have some issues with their traditional core mining business but what are you looking at from the company. Absolutely so shares are trading slightly below our fair value estimate 88 dollars per share. And your right speak my view facing side of the business that's the bauxite mining refining and then aluminum smelting operation. Could have really been struggling a net interest being given that he had a company's gonna actually split into two separately traded entities in the back half of 2016. You have taught the value add operations which have exposure to U. He automotive space and air space and then you have the upstream operations which again. Encompass those commodities facing my district and segments. So for for the commodity businesses would we have a very below consensus long term forecast per aluminum prices. And and so I read and we're very cautious about that that particular side of the business we think aluminum consumption growth in China. It's a rapidly slowing. And that could lead to lower global prices. Or sometime to come. What do you look from out of the other side of the business is it more partnerships like the ones they've done with Ford and GE recently. Yes so those are the types of deals and contracts that we think will generate growth for the value add business over time. Alcoa has signed about nine billion dollars of long term supply contracts and aerospace so the last couple Beers. And they also fueled that future growth by a a query over four point five billion dollars of companies otherwise. So you know they they used to be solely get an aluminum company and aluminum producer but they've acquired assets and now engaging. Production of titanium and titanium alloys and specialty nickel based analyst for Ford aerospace center market we think that's. Area or where they're really generate profitable growth for years to come. The other key and market for them is gonna be automotive the 2015 Ford F 150 was the first. All aluminum bodied like commercial vehicle in North America built to bin. Fairly strong and we think other auto makers will gradually. Substitute aluminum purse field for certain applications on vehicles over five. Is this the type of company you look at the size and announce violated just under about nine and a half billion dollars. This is the type companies that would ever consider truly splitting or spinning off or selling part of their business are they or is that something that could be on the table. No I'd actually that is certainly capping in the second half vote of 2016 they announced that. In in mid 21 at fifteen so they'll be operating in the extra spin off so be separating. The upstream commodity it businesses would shall keep the Alcoa name and that no BS spinning off the devalue that businesses so again that. That's their global rolled products segment and their engineered products and solutions business which have that automotive and aerospace exposure that the name of that company. Hadn't been announced yet for now they just refer to it as as the value that company. That's really that the side of the business that that you know we're most excited about we think will generate the most profitable growth. Whereas as I mentioned earlier we we're we're very cautious about the prospect of of the body that. Very good will enter thanks for joining us today. Andrew lane for Morningstar and if you do wanna take a look at Alcoa the ticker on it is a day. Those coal volumes are declining and that the big thing you have to remember. Is Cole you can talk about the the negative environmental impact that it has but also with natural gas prices as low as they are right now lot of cases it's been cheaper to go to natural gas for power plants as well in the long run so. It's it's. Now affecting. Spilling over into by the rail industry here you're clearly seeing that. And I don't really see that as being something that's gonna change in the next year to. You know I. No I don't because he feet here. A lot of automobile strips are transported through radio right so. If we're at the peak of automobile sales and you know that's a debate for another day I suppose but. You know you could have maybe another three to five years of strong auto sales but once these autonomous cars come out. Auto sales are gonna decline rapidly so is it five years out is ten years out. Coles on the decline. Oil a lot of our oil shipped via rail in with these lower oil prices right a lot of that domestic oil production is gonna go offline as well chuck. Yeah I mean it's as you said look. That it when we talk about Thomas cars that something that spills over into other industries like this as well and and we're gonna have to answer very real questions about what do we do with all these jobs that are lost as that automation becomes more standard. Now it if. It's it's it's staggering when you give it some thought. I everybody welcome to the financial exchange carrier Armstrong talks ought to with you on a day where now. Stocks are trading down about 37 points. Crude oil is up 2% and here's something very curious struck. Ten year treasury bond yielding to let them. So you both of that is raising interest rates longer term rates are coming down. And I think it speaks to the fact. That even though they are raising those rates this speed of that rate hike I think is now coming into question. As well as the eventual peak I think their question just how high those are eventually gonna go. What do you think this is foreign money coming in and buying treasuries. Others there's probably some of it but you also just have a domestic managers trying to Bob build out their own projections just of their fixed income traders they're not wanting to get caught off guard by the Fed. And it's pretty. I I look at that and it screens to me buying opportunity you know tell you Wyatt. Your innings economy. Saying that the yield on the S&P 500. Is higher than what you're gonna earn in interest on a ten year treasury. And generally speaking stocks go up over ten year periods of time. I guess jock you could look at this and say well that doesn't bode very well but the stock market does a very Armstrong knows that there's a few other people that know that as well. Well then and remember that when we talk about valuations here we're we're talking about the valuations that are a little bit stretched on the S and peace deal you know you're not sitting here saying the S&P is underpriced right now and that's why when I take a look at it. You know I think it's more a factor. That rates are so low with this point more then a anything else that that that's that's my view when I take a look at here. Colorado will have students in Colorado will out access to two million dollars in extra scholarship money thanks to marijuana. Sounds like there invoking in new tax on the sale of marijuana and the new taxes going to be used to pay for kids to go to college is Eric. That is correct it is going to it's going to be attacks that gradually phases in starting in two points seventeen. And it's gonna reach 5% in 20/20 of those marijuana sales and pretty much have that money 50% of the money raised from this new tax is gonna go into a scholarship fund. Four Colorado students. I'd see the boring and more you smoke the more you go to college. Right drag raced it makes a lot of sense. I haven't seen anything more on Vermont it you clearly we reported last week that Vermont it was gonna be the first New England state. To legalize recreational marijuana but I haven't seen a word on that story since that. I've been I haven't seen it yet so why I think that's it's still something that is going to be debated by that legislature I believe. But I've not seen any further update. On exactly what Vermont is considering right now. Our text number is 68680. Care to comment on the program or to participate in our trivia that's how you doing east Texas it's X 8680. What brand of sneakers was inspired by Michael Jordan. And his ability to dunk the basketball you know the answer to that question Texas at 68680. What brand of sneakers was inspired by Michael Jordan. And his ability to dunk student loan debt. Has topped one point three trillion dollars a lot of this chuck is never. Know it's. It's becoming a problem and and a I look at you know what people are doing right now and you know lot of cases you look at some of the schools that people are taking out you know the amount of money they're taking out to go to in the majors they're picking up in UC what are you doing. You know you what what are you doing trying to. Get a degree in English literature and you're paying 200000 dollars in digging at 200000 dollars in student loans to do that. What he's doing because it it's just it's it's. If it doesn't make sense it's we I think people when they look at. College they've kind of divorced that price from the reality of what it actually means afterwards that part of that when we talk about student loans are puts a lot of that blame on the parents because eighteen year old kid. Isn't gonna know what it feels like to have a 100000 dollars in loans out there they've never experienced it but right parent has taken out a mortgage they've had to make those payments every month. And I think you know there's there's something be said for. Getting your kids the best education that you can't but there's another for being realistic about the cost and in what that means for your kid after you graduate or he or she graduates. But the other thing to consider is if you have a kid in high school. Think about the military option you go into the military for five years. You're gonna come out aged 2223. And you're gonna have a big bag of money they're sold much GI money that's available for military people that you know the that serve their country. That's that's another option rather than borrowing I'll start money I I do were I liked it and I'm like Q chuck and I I worry. About the amount of debt that people are taking on. In order to get outta college and I have nothing wrong I don't think there's anything wrong with studying art history that just don't don't go into debt. It's the little wrong with studying our history. Thanks. And look I've pony friends who were art history majors but don't even tell you look at pros in the smartest thing I ever did. If you know like to observe I had a conversation with them they'd say yeah I really liked it I really enjoyed it and yeah maybe I have a job right now but my student loans are a little bit tough. You know it's it's it's not an easy thing to do. There're not many politicians but it that I light but here's one that I do Doug Doocy is the governor of Arizona. And during his State of the Union Address in Arizona. He made the statement if you're old enough to father child in your old enough to accept financial responsibility for that child. Doocy continued if you. Don't want your. Embarrassing unlawful and irresponsible behavior going viral. Man up and tea so. With the department of economic security is doing. In Arizona chuck is they're tweeting out pictures and the names of anybody who does not paid their child support in Arizona. Love this. Absolutely I've I've often said that we need to get a little bit more creative with how we deal. With people who break the law in terms of you know you can find people and yet that's that's one thing. But things like this I think it's it's it's this the type of thing that you need to do. In order to deal with people who you know again. Someone fathers a child and in that not paying child support. Pay your child support you deal with you have that kid it's your responsibility. And an I love this personally absolutely enough. It's outstanding. It and if Saddam. You know I guess the problem might be you know the guy who's out of state and I think a lot of this comes out of divorce to track you know you get divorced. And your angry with your ex spouse. And you stairwell on and get to that expels monopoly my child support wired dune is certain it exactly you're not hurting your spouse when you are. Yet it is. Innocent victim hands you know doesn't deserve to be treated that way. He sees sales dropped to historic lows we haven't seen personal computer sales. Drop this low since 2007. That's the year that the iPhone. Was introduced. If it's shocking to see just how badly PC sales have dropped let's take a look at some Dell shipments declined. Five point 7%. Lenovo four and a half percent. Asus was oh they actually went up by point 8% and apple shipments rose by two point 8%. So it's. If that people to start using PCs anymore it's. No it's it's you're seeing a pretty substantial decline you're down to about 276. Million units last year as about a ten point 4% drop. From the year before so you figure you are selling over 300 million computers back just in 2014. Now down to 276. And I think it's it's both on the enterprise side as well as on the personal side and it's you know I look at. And I finally last longer they'll take days like it generally your PC's. II music a laptop. That is on its fourth year and gosh I remember when the reverend you'd buy a laptop when your college at the be lucky the key you're too. Already used to be generally it was you know you get to the kind of three or four years and that was that was about it and I can tell you. I actually just bought a new computer about a week and a half ago. And the one before that had lasted about eight years. And and and that was why you know I said look it's added I didn't need to do it until it was finally you know really necessary but eight years and in part of it. They do last longer now there's no doubt about it. They sure do. Take coming up we're gonna be joined by Richard heartland. And from each and I know it's only January 13. Good for a good forums are what. Now we're gonna do something very important we're gonna help get ready to do your taxes we are joined by Richard Gartman from each and good morning good morning get ready and geared up for taxis and aria. So we are geared up we're ready. We're ready and work in. Now there's been a lot of stories about fraudulent refunds. Being filed on behalf of taxpayers and people causing all kinds of problems with identity theft and or else. What can tax payers do to protect themselves from somebody filing false tax return to their name. You know you know as badly this is a growing problem the IRS estimates that they've paid out. Five billion dollars. In in fraudulent refunds and 2013 alone so I think for the consumer there's really a two pronged approach one is that. Protect your personal information couldn't hear me as much as possible. And people should know that the IRS will never call. Will never send an email. On any account but not specifically not requesting any tax idea information so they get back kind of call or email people need to just hang up. And Miller deleted so the other thing people should think about this filing early. And the reason for that is the filing process itself. At the flag at the Social Security number has been in. Used the and that will then cut prevent any further potentially fraudulent use of that number of attacks. What if you don't have all your information together though you know leave it like I know I'm not gonna get all my information from the investment companies I want app that probably. Late march. Well that's you know that that's the case I mean you need to file when I think early into violence in the UK and so you know clearly there are people who now are. Dealing primarily with W two income. And they should be filing as soon as they can do it obviously people like yourself and I'm in that class myself. You have to wait for those investment 1099 to come in before you can do so. Are there any big changes this year I mean their base filing their 2015 return to camp we were saying that the are there any big changes that we should know about before we file because nobody's filed yet raised January at least I don't know anybody who files as January 13. I I will flowers on it though. April right so. Which would only need to know before we file our tax returns. They are well I think the major change this year has to do with the Affordable Care Act which of course has been in in place for a couple of years now. By the change for 2015 is that everybody should be receiving. Eight tax document and information document indicating. The tight. Of coverage and the and the number of months that they were covered during 2015. And people should know that that information is also going to be I'll rest so that the document they may need to accurately prepare. Or you're talking about. The talk about the insurance document to prove they had health insurance. Exactly so last year the only document that came out was were people who had. Their coverage through the through an exchange by the federal or state but now. Large and small employers have a mandate to issue that 1095 document with a different letter designation as well so. People. And and of course there there are required to inform the IRS. For people who didn't have coverage during the years they are facing higher penalties in twenty is being built for instance a family of four. Which household income of about 60000 dollars is now looking at a penalty of 975. Dollars. And that's scheduled to go to almost 2000 dollars next. Here. Are notes are what are you. You know Richard is that the 1000 dollar surprise that you're talking about. And cut out the back at. But the different surprise but the good surprise though one the one of the levee and has written eight gave Affordable Care Act I think. The other thing that people should know board when he sixteen is that people who don't have coverage still have an opportunity to get covered the exchanges are now open. They're still open but that window is closing pretty quickly that and January 31 is the last state to secure coverage. Who do you exchange unless there is some kind of qualifying event they'll. Proactively. People should should definitely be looking at that because that 975. Dollar. Potential penalty that I talked about is going to be 2000 dollars or close to it in 2060. So Richey having given this much in the way of good news yet. You know he's told us about fraud and you've told us about the the affordable care forms how about some good news I I'd like a thousand dollar positive surprise. Well let me tell you about that this is a great promotion at H&R block is running. It is four early filers so. We're giving of 1000 people will win 1000 dollars every day for a month or giving away a million dollars today. That promotion runs starting now and good through February 15 people who come in and filer return will be able to enter into that growing. And of course the sooner there in the more chances they have of getting their name drawn. How many returns that you guys do last year. Last year we did about thirteen million return. No kidding. Now let's say. About another seven billion and people would. Do their own deep DIY returns using our software. While OPEC so if I wanna get in on that thousand bucks were like go out of it more information on the. There's information available on our web site that's www. HR block dot com slash grand. And that we'd also love to have people join us in the social media conversations tell us what they do with addict that thousand dollars using aspect my grand plan. Very good very good thank you very much we sure appreciate your time. And Richard Garland from H&R block talking to you about portable character and knows what 2000 boxed you know that checked I didn't know is going to be quite that I know. 2000 dollar penalty. For choosing at your own free will not to violate pitcher curt not to buy health insurance. You know all the penalties in at a few noticed that all of these two really bad penalties. Go into effect people are gonna be writing those checks after President Obama has left office 20 yeah oh yeah notice that it's it's all phased in right after he's out. Not a political guy not trying to get my high horse and net interest in his chest and if it might be more than a coincidence. That we all get screwed. Really badly beginning in the year when he seventeen. So I've got time for tricky question here what NBA team does Michael Jordan currently serve as the principal and older. He's chairman and 268680. Is our text number way in the eight team does Michael Jordan currently served. As the parent principal owner and chairman of if you know the answer that question Texas at 608680. If you're playing trivia long list. Google to seek auto industry input on self driving cars. This is what we're talking about briefly earlier but. Google's taking different approach to this autonomous car business they're going reaching out to GM and Toyota. In all these different car companies and saying hey. We're building this platform. We want it agree with you I like that approach as opposed apple because I'm worried that the apple technology won't talk to other technology. Because Apple's not known for having friendly technology we'll keep in mind the technology doesn't need to talk to other technology out there. While that you need these cars like. I don't want if I drive and say I'm driving school car right yup I don't wanna crash because Apple's. Technology's not sync up with who. Well that's not how they're building the technology. It's it's being built so that every Clark and operate independently adjust with the sensors they have a lot of people had initially envisioned OK you just have this mass control of of all the cars and they're all talking to each other. Well no you don't need that all you need is for cars to be able and what they've what they forget is simpler is always the cars can tell what's going on around them they're able to to deal with it. Just like right now you talk about the other driver was cars Kubel has been testing. They're not communicating with the that'd that'd be of the driver dead at the driven cars on the road at what are weaving Eric holders and an even know. They're not communicating with those cars they probably. Cars we call them dumb cars don't have to go into a break but. There is a tremendous amount of resistance chock. This conversation we had that electric cars and autonomous cars are gonna read text you for success rate. I can just see that nightmare hackers taking over driver of the scars no thank you want electric short drive those cars are loved by eight cylinder. Gas burner. Six another six three here in the controls engineer an autonomous vehicle would have to talk to that rule or Apple's systems. How to control speed and breaking if it didn't. What they aren't they would be doing now to come up with some kind of a common protocol I think that comet particles of very good question to you truck. Notes now what they're doing. But it has to be there has to be some rules of the Roche because there's two rules of the rotor different from the cars being able to talk to reach out. It took a look at Google's driver less cars right now that they test paper in one point three million miles of those cars talked to any other vehicles. I don't know the answers no. Eight while they're sensing those other 88 activity. Maybe you worked Hawkins is not the right thing to use that they they need to be able to communicate. No they don't we went we pray that the cars that they are testing right now do not communicate with anything. They don't talk to the curb they don't talk to other cars they don't talk to the dog crossing the street they sense them based on the sensor technology that's in there. But they do not talked anything out there and they don't need to talk to anything out there because the sensor technology has improved to the point where it's that accurate in that in the enact capable. Of doing it we initially thought that you have to have these vehicles talking because that technology wasn't there. You don't need that the war has not been testing that. In their driver was vehicle. Why is the are such a vehement resistance to this content. Because it's new is it like we we talk about it pretty regularly here and I mean that the text messages we get in are almost violent right or any people are filed the vehemently. Opposed to this whole thought of some computer driving their car. Well look if they had Twitter back in 1917 I'm pretty sure that people would have had some pretty nasty things to say about Henry Ford when he was coming out his automobile. Because people would have probably said there's no way I don't wanna go thirty miles an hour that's dangerous you know you would actually you know you're right I've read the back at the old news oh yeah its it's own it's you know you have people criticizing saying other than automobiles gonna make life too fast paced and we're not you know have the same slow pace of life that we do today and it's gonna be so dangerous with everyone. Careening around without you know control of the vehicle accident which book they're kind of right I mean a knock it alive but at by the same token. You know and look. I've I've said I'm so I like driving aghast correlate control bit but I understand that this is where the technology asked ago because. We do so me you talk about the number of motor vehicle deaths that we have every year I think it's close to 50000. You talk about that. 80% of them are due to human error. The rest the other point percentages mechanical failures and so forth but you think about it you say we can't you because sup 40000 deaths a year just by moving this direction. Look I'll I'll I'll do this if that's the case easily. By the way Michael Jordan. Currently serves as the principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte. Hornets. Is that not having very good season this year. Quite pour actually but John from Worcester had the right answer to that question. And he's taking on the T should one of our Texas from 97 in this I think gets it and another core issue here. Says look at the perceived loss of freedom and there's there's no doubt about that you give up. Some control in that you don't have your hands on the wheel and your not in control of that vehicle anymore there's no data privacy. And and privacy. While I don't know private is again it depends on exactly what the systems that you put in place all right I don't know exactly how that's going to be structured. There's the potential for privacy laws but until I see how they're building those systems I don't know. But I just a lot of people that don't even have trips now ponders other car's track for that reason right. Photo dried out. You drive through tollbooth and you'll see. You know hundred cars going through the holes easy here it and they're paying cash yep easy so why they do at those are people that are concerned about the loss of privacy. I'd do you want to do a bonus trivia question and you don't one up. Yeah I've got a bonus question we we have some time for. Bonus trivia question this one's gonna do it a little bit more in depth here now okay Michael Jordan had a specific playing weight. It's not enough money but he sure doesn't like funny but what you have foundered charged to. You have a person still has seen action were for get stuff done wedding whatever it is to try to and so. You know the that they're going to be. Martin saint. Tedious to do whatever count runner right now it's equal in the hour art experts at peace so I think that's great aspect. How do you quantify that the stock is cheap Michael. You know that's a tough one with this company because. You know it's ten. Right so earnings. But not step for its first. But trailing so you don't trailing. And trailing PE its war on our part to make its exports cheap here where. And you know early stages. There. So look to pay Greek Euro skeptic Greek ago about what I am and there's so outsiders. Are. That war. Rapid or it is a big picture. Two is you know is worried you'd expect it to be to another which is that the wind. That. Effect in. Which I think. Just forget about these are sort of by the right. Thankfully were also very forgiving right we the little slippery to get it back so I think that's another aspect to stir in it. Yeah well look look at chuck I mean it a step. But in December he told me that I will not go back to Tripoli for anywhere from the nine months. Back here in lake three weeks an argument people for giving me. Radio guys are not celebrities who knew where does work roads. Regrets so is it I. Yes Mike is this the buy in whole or is it trade they are out of line. Are sure. That at achieve that deficit. And has yet to answer question you can add to patient. A shift. At its current rates. That you definitely have to wait. It out. Yet and so they have to stay at. Believe me area saying about the races if a app and scandal it's. Safe now listen again this is key. Because there outbreaks happen. But. It could eat at Durham where he wait waiting to happen to get worked up state system. TC. And there could be more pieces that. Well it up the press and CC. State. Those. Bats seeing you know problems. In aren't. We another one it happened in you know early January. Of that age that that battle suggested they are. So I think it is a fixable problem I've watched some interviews with the CEO like him member's name but imminent in the big guy is. Brightness tack he's just Smart guy. And and he is living EP you can see the screen of this on Hispanics you know like you knew he was all in. On in terms of rectify the problem and I currently thinking he I. You know I I I felt his pain you know it's like is he he's. This is a company he gave birth to and he does not want it fails especially under these circumstances. Out managed and by the way if you ever have. Read books as well. That the FB heritage or you know. It's in the evening in number exceeds that excite me where it was quite over and out a great beginning and where the company. And edit now you know. That's just. Under Ron and now it is that's out. Get Michael thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. So chuck when you went did you go to the same store twice for chipotle they won twice. And same time that day. Yeah both times it was probably 1215 took on a prime time for launch. And the first time was what about two weeks ago. Yup first I was probably maybe the week after Christmas and there were maybe. In a store that seeding for maybe forty people are so there may be seminary that receded another seminary in line. Second time I went there are probably fifteen to twenty people seated and maybe ten people. So I'm sure there are a lot of hedge funds that are monitoring. You know they got spies all over the country looking at story activity because that'll tell them before the official stats come out is how they're doing.
