This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are down. Sure exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. We have had three bad weeks that are a little for the stock market big question is can we turn it around this week. I don't know the answer to that but I do know Warren Buffett taking. Big positions improving her increasing his position and IBM. And announcing we got an announcement this morning truck that he's taken that one billion dollar position in Apple Computer. You know Warren Buffett off following a a report with the SEC today essentially saying that he has bought nearly ten million shares of Apple Stock at this point. That position worth about 900 million dollars right now so. He still owns you know it do you put it in not terms in terms of ownership percentage he owns about a quarter percent the company so it's not a huge stake by any means especially by his standards but this is how he tends to go into companies that might be a quarter percent this quarter another quarter percent. You figure eventually he likes to get up and that two to 3% range. And that's something that you'd probably expect over the next couple years. How long does he have to disclose. Their or how often has yet to disclose his semiannual quarterly quarterly quarterly disclosures. At the the other thing that I find interest in track is he's doubling down on his IBM that which is not been a good speed the IBM has not been a good bet. But what's even more curious news. Look at the relationship between IBM and apple you know you're you're talking about the these two companies are doing a lot of work in tandem. IBM of course being I think their biggest new market is going to be artificial intelligence that he put that together with what. Apple for technology and hardware could be an impressive conglomerate. Yeah I mean his his addition dues IBM state is it's it's it's not huge I mean he owned previously. You know I think about 81 million shares added a couple 100000 at this point so it's a small boost she's continuing to add there I think where he sees fit. But I think. You know that's a company remember Warren Buffett before IBM had never bought a technology company before Wright had never invested in a single technology company now you have been a span of about three years. Investing in two of. So but he's he's east kind of downloading a lot of the investment responsibilities at both of these purchases. Could have been based on the guys that are working for him and not in particular machine Charlie it's outside of here. It's outside of their realm but maybe it's the guys that his successors that are making these investment but he's got a couple. Other things in recent years that are different to remember Warren didn't used to invest in energy unit made a significant investment at the end of Phillips 66 over the last couple years so a couple things that suggest look. This isn't the old Warren Buffett that we all used to know back in the eighty's and ninety's. This is a guy who again has had probably has delegated some responsibility at this point it is doing some things that are. Kind of out of the ordinary for what Berkshire Hathaway who traditionally do. We're going to be talking about oil in a few minutes will be joined by a group called massage from Bloomberg. And oil made a move this morning at it was up to 49 dollars a barrel got a flash. About an hour ago. And suggesting that oil is it 49 dollars or Barroso keep in mind that we did get empire manufacturing data that's the New York region. Coming in at minus nine. Previously it had been at plus nine point six clearly empire manufacturing that's a disappointing that. Yeah it's disappointing that it's one that's notoriously volatile and I think that the cause of that. In any one month you see these types of swings in these types of fluctuations. Manufacturing has not been good in the United States over the last eighteen months largely due to the strength of the US dollar. Dollar stronger means it's tougher export your goods because people abroad have less purchasing power so. Bright in line with what we've seen the last year and a half we've seen some improvement in Europe kind of sporadically over the first quarter. But nothing consistent in his this is just another negative data point and I don't expect manufacturing. To recover at a consistent level. Any time in the next six month. And I national association of homebuilders coming out at 10 AM did we learn anything of significance from the Annie HB. So the NAHB what it does it puts out now what's called the housing market index the HMI where readings below fifty shows that there are is contraction of they readings above fifty show there's growth it keeps a level of 58 here pretty much the same. As the last three months so we have a four month trend right in this level. One thing that is interesting though. Is that sales expectations in the next six months did increase by three points so they are expecting that sales are going to tick up over the next six months here. Buyer traffic. Continues to remain I think a little bit lower than they want at forty force and not really showing the growth they want there first time homebuyers and I think there and it doesn't get into that kind of regularity there so it you know the biggest area that you're seeing growth right now this the Al west at 67 is shown the biggest growth northeast fell three points to 41 so. It's just a reminder that when you get outside of some of the big markets like a Boston like a Providence lake a Worcester. You really have some some trouble in some of these areas. It's it's still so location depend he can't just sailed Massachusetts is great. There parts of Massachusetts that are really struggling right now in the home. Have you guys made the investment in the TSA pre checked Mercury is at some meat purchased no I have not I don't trauma but two years ago. The game let's explain where it is and it's gonna become more important the TSA. Is lobbying. For more money two run that the the airport security. And because of that news in this is conjecture on my apartment. The because of that the you're seeing increased lines at the airport lately hearing a lot of complaints. About how long the lines they've been as long as two hours. One machine break out in Phoenix last week and you know 4000 bags missed their flights but TSA is boosting their efforts. To reduce the wait time I get a tie just give you suggestion if you fly more than a couple times a year you might want to invest in TSA. Pre check ready down until you get away if everyone does it's not gonna work as well. But now I don't need to know retreat track don't don't invest into it it's a security process you go through my wife and I did it last fall. In what it does is you have to wait as long lines if you go to the airport you'll see a special line for TSA project and all means is that we went through and I think we had to have our eyes he hands. It may be fingerprint I read you remember what the whole procedure if you put. Fingerprinted and I think they take you know picture and everything they do they probably run a cursory background check on the back end as well did you think that is taking 85 dollars. Yeah it five bucks for five years. Five years a slump set in energy Yuxi here. So you get a this this identification number Tucker permit once you've. Paid the 85 dollars. And then any time you book the ticket very you have to put in that identification number but it saves you from going through those long lines you see the airport this. Thirst am flying to actually applied to North Carolina yup and I'll save that because that's jetBlue in the jetBlue line can be. A mile long you know oh yeah if you hit that at the wrong connoisseur on holiday we are girl and especially on a weekend everybody is going to graduation he can be really bad. TSA prairie creek check I would invest in it because. The the stories that I'm hearing coming out of airports in lines in Chicago hour and 45 minutes long peoples the sacred place. It's it's really interesting though because it's it's kind of tournament site flew over the weekend. And going down was flying down to Tampa on Saturday and all kinds aligns at the apple coming back on Sunday. From Tampa from. I was literally the only person. Like that there was no like I didn't even the preach it there was no one else there that's so it's. I mean it's kinda hit or miss there's this certain times that are always busier ever and always things off I take the 5 AM flight no one's gonna be there except for every business traveler out there who flies five. If you fly over Thanksgiving I'll tell you what that it's worth the TSA preach at 85 bucks right there so easily because it checks out of the white lines are a mile long I always play on Thanksgiving no one's there. Yeah you play I play morning of not me by the wind gauge for and its tonight the zoo now. Annually TSA crate preaching is a little advice and you don't do it they'll but it trucks point if everybody doesn't do the ones that'll ruin it for me make a lot of people are asking why is the price of oil rallying. We told you last couple weeks we've been talking about the fires in western Canada. Now there are problems in Nigeria. In addition to that Goldman Sachs is raising their price target sort of get to the bottom. As to what is moving the price of oil dramatically higher will be joined bike or pol dishonest. Hi everybody very are strong here from the financial exchange I'm joined today by. Jake too who's a senior vice president at leader bank and were talking about something called. Zero it this is a program that allows landlords with you have. 1010 it's a 110 tenants are 210. Tenants is allows you to collect your rents electronically. As opposed to waiting for those paper versions to come in the mail to wonderful new program available exclusively. From leader bank and Jay's gonna tell us exactly how this program works. Ace Barry so it leader rink we actually think a lot of real estate developers and property owners in the Boston area and some of our larger clients. Came into the banking and we heat in coming with huge squad that checks. It's who we thought about you know why why is it in this the needs are still bringing so many checks that they ain't. It's it's a simple thing you know and in so you have property in Cambridge. Three unit building. And each Judy's three bedrooms. You may have nine checks yet to keep track of just that one property right. So budgets college student exactly so if you have three properties that's going seven check it starts it starts out pretty quickly. So would you read what we've done is we've we've allowed a landlord to invite their tactics. The tenant signed up we deduct each share range from the tenants and send one east each payment. That landlord for each unit. So it makes me very cleaning simple. It's very clearly described as to what the rent is being paid for which property crest which unit number and everyone gets reminders in its automatic. And it's. Paul how are you today in Iraq Ali good is only three months ago when we are talking about oil trading at 27 dollars a barrel. And today I believe it hit 49 dollars at some point this morning. The this been a lot there's been a lot of changes in the market the past compliment I mean I think that because Spain that would CNET the past few weeks. Does that. Walt in health turn. Now within unlawful. Terrorism and couple of blocked Nigerian production offline so that's pretty key. Because and as much as one and a half million out of the market means that we needed to score impact fairly quickly. That Nigeria its its its of topic a problem. How much has come off line in Nigeria. I mean Russia they were. Around. Keeping him barrel today and now that until twelve point seven and as little as one million barrels a day. To date just because it's very difficult to talk about clean cut line. Just in the past week aside. Is that based on being in the what from what I can gather is big government hasn't had the money basically pay off the rebels because of the lower price of their product supply is that an oversimplification of it. Multiple. They've basically when the news testing team and he hit me depicted about corruption and yeah. There with these achievements that attention protection payments paid to the rebels to that in exchange these payment he wouldn't damage any of the pipelines. He's stopping is that that. The attacks have just increased has been. After the Texas in the shot so cultural war because a disheveled facility. And a bit full caucus vice president that they can achieve. Rita extremes to halt production of trying to. So that peace it's social companies have actually with the practically excellent nonessential employees as well. While that's that's dramatic if they do that what about Venezuela A my understanding is that Venezuela looks like they're slipping and almost like a revolution. Yes and let's say that a lot trick giving the congress' rating against the president but he's like really just passed stained impala. You know there's been formal protest the visit. Petitions some by two million people. Supreme Court sitting on the side the president that it. You know it's been not been able to enact change that's for quite just tee again a bit more stability in the country's. That they couldn't it have made a concerted effort to maintain the production that belonged the protest a war I think the more impressed into the country of I was you know both. Hala disruptions in the country of power outages. You know it would seem he's had trouble spots to be looking leaked forty what we currently. Have ventured out so still to come to steal the pocket. With CN likelihood of those getting a second dip in the price of oil like we had in February. I would've had just before the Nigeria so far I would just I don't like to. We still have already sold species from performing US production well there has been supporting cast how important to the extent I think people expected to. So. And does Nigeria production of trying to end the pot and a little bit dependent sort of production off line has really been offset by Iran and Saudi Arabia so I would've expected. But the conduct and the market I think the registry change but I think. Very good very good or Paul thanks for the update appreciate it thank you group all those Irish from Bloomberg intelligence. Mean I get that double dip after I should stop making predictions. But Beck got this one it breathing predictions and rumors that he seemed to be the tooth and on to the rumors coming. Yeah that's the unsubstantiated ones Gloria the decal it's the only time that we specialize in any any substance of Calvin Johnson Maria. I know store tired stores are still take it easy but he ate this season has this party. Demi there's still time in theory he could end up playing for the patriots bills and I you're not wrong and yet still. The super doubles over in and what's the process for denial. For you were for anyone know for me for me you just move on looking at perhaps a picture. Tucker and are talking about. Amazon this morning and the it has done over the weekend announces. That they're getting into the private label offerings. In the doing it from everywhere from food to diapers. And clothing is one thing here's here's something that I think Amazon could get into business. Suits men's suits men's suits published the paper mints for 500 dollar sometimes more 250 dollars. Imagine I've never paid Morton efforts in real. But that's the beauty of your average prices for 500 dollars net and you could go to with Taylor somewhere. In the New England region so if you Vivian. Hartford right you have to drive over to West Hartford date that measure you up. But then your suit is you can order your seat through Amazon and it gets delivered in 48 hours. Miller who makes the suit. And Friday made by the Chinese the Chinese South America Mexico what it's like Amazon's brand of the Amazon. They're not there already companies doing custom made suits on line. Yeah but there are lot more expensive no they're not how much Charlotte they are ones Al. I have to dig up the name of the company is I can't remember right now but there's one that pretty much what you do is so you put your phone up against the wall you know Pena to take a picture view. And actually size as you just based on that pictures they don't even go to Taylor you're even go to a tailor it sizes you and then he can go through shirt shoots the whole bit. And it's all custom built to you gotta get that force that that's that seems so one more shot back I gotta remember a bigger and and figure what the name of it is but it's pretty impressive what they're able to do there and you can customize patterns that you can do a lot with that. And it's not overly expensive. Will this deal with the Amazon what they're doing is they're getting into private label baked goods privately evil in and the reason this is a of of interest news. It's only going to be available to prime members rates if you're not any does on prime membership gives you another inducement in and what they'll do chuck is they'll make things. Very attractively priced right so something that you might go to the grocery store. Let's use paper towel as an example double coated paper and and the store and buy your bounty paper towel for fifteen dollars you get the buy from Amazon for nine dollars. And give you just one less reason to go to the store it's equivalent to light you know Stop & Shop. Spoons or something like that like it's basically a store brand but it's Amazon in the margins on it. From what I can gather are much higher then if they go in they buy a product from Kimberly-Clark or Procter & Gamble from. Yeah I'm curious to see whether they get the type of traction. That your other private label brands typically get just because you're not able to go and actually touched the edge I wonder if there is more of a disconnect there. Again this is this what I talk about with Amazon that was they try effort to like it may work it may not. But that like no one else is trying you know like nowhere else to say they'll register like a white label but you know. They do everything and you gotta figure for every you know product that Amazon has that ends up working out another. Hundred or so that probably don't work that you know people just completely forget about people don't remember. Amazon marketplace where you can go and sell things now just you know post your own products and everything like that they went through three different iterations of that before they finally got it. Right you know of any of those big Motley those huge warehouses they have across the country and ninety. They lost ninety end and it's it's every day that goes by it's getting tougher and tougher for anybody to compete with Amazon. I'm given by the way we just saw another casualty. In energy today Sandridge Energy file for bankruptcy protection is that yeah you know and that's with the oil recovering in price. Yeah that's yeah we had to think for five last week where energy companies going bankrupt. That that's production coming off line I wonder how little US domestic production goes what do we at a run rate now about eight point nine somewhere right around that nine million barrels day it's in that ballpark is then dropped to eat this dropped seven you know it and I'm talking longer term like. Are we sitting here this time next year. Bemoaning a number of seven point five million all depends on the saudis that all depends on them which is why I've given up trying to trying to figure out the you're Smart economic predictions. And and they increased the discounts at all senators haven't seen I don't believe so just because they they really don't need to. Up next are going to be talking about secrets of the Dow Jones Industrial Average a lot of things about the doubt that you may have not have been of the where. I do I convince PO I am happy to go you know I'll show up you can shake my hand if I'm alive but. It you do see these cases cropping up every now and then where for one reason or another whether it's the same Nina. You know on this type Social Security number on the death certificate or Soviet I took its. Pension to the but yeah it wasn't just yeah Social Security guy at a penchant. And it is so they. They cancel it I just think if thinking about it logistically right you're you're traveling you're on vacation you're 73 years old you're retired or even retired he had been retired fifteen years sixteen years so he's been retired for awhile. And then all of a sudden the checks stop coming. And not only the checks and it totally diss your Social Security checks stop coming your pension stops coming in to take money out of your count. Yes definitely going to be no pun intended awake up call form I guess and he was able to actually get this it to get the problem squared away from but it took a long time to get this figured I wasn't something where it was just yet you come down this week and it's all that it's like I think a few months before he was able to finally get everything figured out. In operating the way it was supposed to be. Seven anyone asks very would you give us an update on the Verizon strike are they in negotiations will people be going back to work. Well I'll tell you they are in negotiations they were actually meeting yesterday. I I can tell you that for a fact and the federal government is now involved in this in this strike track. And they've mediators involved at this point out the it I'll get to the bottom in the next we're gonna be joined by somebody from the union. In the next hour Craig fields from IBEW. 2321. Will give us an update the only thing I've gotten something that came out of the newspaper and I'm not sure about willing to vouch. For its accuracy does this particular publication is notoriously inaccurate. Will not mean that publication. But it will we will we're gonna go to the horse's mouth. That's a very nice thing to say about Craig. Now has now Brooke Sanders he's driving up. I edit a lot of people are wondering about the strike so we will find out. If from Craig about what's going on why would Warren Buffett day in and this makes me a little. Nervous why would he be bank rolling. Dan Gilbert to bid to buy. I don't know good. Because yeah like Yahoo! from all likened tells a dumpster fires at this point now I mean it's like the last nine months of has not been kind of that company. You've got talent leaving you've got all currently it's not. The actual value of Yahoo! is negative when you strip out solid the Alibaba stake and he's a Smart guys Dan Gilbert's bill. Look at its is the kind of high risk high reward deal that might end up working out now. My guess is if Warren Buffett gets involved it's not going to be actually owning it it'll be something like he did with Iowa's annual America's back in the financial Chrysler says look I'll give you a Lindy the money 8% mean you know I have no risk in equity stake on the the enacted could ever by a dead either convert up perfect event of do one. Likes to do something called the preferred stock rated the convertible preferred stocks of which he did with. Goldman and woody did with Bank of America was he gave them. Billions of dollars and say bank Lemerre was six billion dollars 66 or 7 AM and I need to know he's converted. But he noted that he still get 8% on the right now 8% return guaranteed by Bank of America. And then he has the right to convert that stock to common at seven bucks yeah. So some day when you see bank of a market trading at fifty dollars you can read about how Warren Buffett just confirmed it is preferred. Two common canceled that day he'll he'll be dead heat on the adjustment of the two billion dollars easily and thank war buff he's immortal I think Warren Buffett is discovered the fountain of youth and Lou live for college Sumner redstone. Okay that's under arrest and he says that Ted Williams remember when Sumner redstone said that he's. Is her real well I don't know how he did nothing that got a lift if you look at asking what you're succession plan and he got sick here and it's lease and I have no succession plan I'm going to look for a and he's 92 right is pretty articulate for a pretty hard to argue that still kicking. They up next will be joined by Alec Lucas from Morningstar he is a mutual fund that he wants to talk to us about that's next from our insurer match dot com studio. It's the financial exchange with a very Armstrong in chunks ought to on the financial exchange radio network. The name of the actor who played ice man in the movie top gun was none other than now film. Certainly was John from Clinton had the correct answer that question he takes on one of our coffee mugs today. And it's time to do little bit of stock talk here as we do every Monday. It is a mutual fund Monday here on the financial exchange we're joined by Alec Lucas from Morningstar. Alec thanks for joining us today. Thank. Now we're talking about the American funds new world fund. Which largely to my knowledge is involved in emerging markets is that correct. That's right it's an emerging markets fund but it has sort of a nontraditional approach that what has been increasingly. Copied more or less than the fund started in 1999 and that is that it invest in emerging markets both directly. And indirectly through develop market multinationals that have significant revenues from emerging market countries. You mentioned that it via the approach has been copied somewhat in recent years has that reduced the effectiveness of this because everyone is doing it are they still able. Opted to innovate somewhat in the space. Well actually clarify it it's more been copied by the fact that when you talk to fund managers who are managing. International fund to a lot of them are trying to access. The kind of gross that you get from emerging markets in directly through invest in develop market multinationals. So in some ways despondent and emerging markets fund but it's unique profile that is that it invested developing market countries. Developing markets firms was significant revenue from emerging markets directly in emerging markets and also an emerging market debt. Make it an interesting choice for a portfolio for international exposure in general and not just getting into a specific plot for emerging markets. But it can do that as well. Is this ended up performing relative to its peer group over say the last three years in five years. Let me call that up if it does that that the fund has had an excellent track record recently. So so emerging markets have have got slaughtered. And this is the kind of fun day stay in 2009 environment. He's not going to look very good and added it did in this sustained rally it's it's going to it's going to look orally. In 2015. The calendar year it lost 6%. Which of course don't want to lose 6% but the broader morgues are diversified emerging market category was down roughly 14%. OK so held up better during a time like that one question that I do. In terms of expenses it's charging it if my figures are right here looks like a little over 1% one point 04%. Where is that bit compared to other funds in this category no it's always more expensive to buy emerging markets funds just because the transaction costs are high. Yet so that defeat are very competitive. Against. Other front load funds it wrecks in the cheapest 1%. If you compare it to no load on terror groups switched sent to be cheaper it would break in the cheapest compile it in the cheapest 16% of bonds. So it it is reasonable in terms of its expense ratio and again this is a unique fund that provides. A relatively. Given that emerging markets very volatile relatively conservative option for emerging markets in general. And also the kind of on that because of this significant degree of both markets exposure could also that the portfolio for international and international fund in general. Very good Alec I appreciate you joining us today thanks for our thanks for the information on this one. Thank you Al Lucas from Morningstar the ticker on that if you wanna look at the American fund's new world fun on your own is any EWF. They include CNBC. Bloomberg. And Fox Business news. I watch all three of them. I've probably watched Bloomberg the most. But I do watch CNBC for the entertainment. And I find Jim Cramer to be quite entertaining. Now I remember talking reverend John Mooney was in when chuck was on one of his vacations earlier this year he was. He was down on Jim Cramer here he said he said watched Jim Cramer. For the entertainment. But don't take his topics. And Jim Kramer charges fifteen dollars a month for his action a work its newsletter but it gives the performance Wharton. Did an analysis of this performance pretty bad from like Hillary. You know Wharton figured out is this Kramer a lot launched his action alert plus for portfolio back in 2000 one's about fifteen years ago now. And the Wharton school did a a study on this they have no laxity the deed no ax to grind and it's not like they're picking on Jim Cramer. Yeah and in pretty much what they found. Was that there was under performance over that time appeared to have you go back to win the fund launched back in a win newsletter launched back in 2001. The S&P 500 total return over that time about a 120%. A little bit north that. Kramer's portfolio over the same time returned a little more than 60% or about half as much in terms of the growth there and. The other one that had looked it was his performance in 2014. Now. Tony fourteen was kind of a strange year the S&P was up were getting for our. 11% excuse me. They use only up 1%. One year periods weird things can happen I mean I agree his last year in Warren Buffett significantly underperform the SP anybody who's in the long. Rape anybody who is of value investor had a bad year in 2050s but their chances are they're bouncing back but Kramer's record from what I can gather jacket and he is just. Bat all the time. Well it's in again he's he's definitely underperformed in some key markets where the market has had some significant growth and he simply has not now I don't know what the reasons for that are necessarily I've been dug into. That the report in any detail to be able to see exactly. Why that was written about it over the weekend from them look and an end and a lot Jimmy need you watch it like he comes on CNBC. Around. 9:30 in the morning. And he does this twenty minute and it's it's like a comedy. Ray if you if you watch oats it puts you puts on a great show it's a wonderful it's a great show the question is should you be investing based on the advice she gives it should you be investing in the newsletter fifteen bucks right. Right I mean that's the exhibit a 180 bucks a year it. You know just of that newsletter so you figure fury that for five years it's been thousand dollars. Thousand dollars in Italy that the investment needed advice you daddy's got to run rate a 50% death. Right and that's the Heath I don't know they just it that he Jim Cramer not having a good day let's put them. If you have a specific question about your current policies or are simply looking for ways to save some money don't delay. We're talking about the different ways you can owned real estate tot if you are real estate is ending nominee realty trust is it protected from the nursing home and will it. Avoid probate when you die. Well what do what do loaded question because nominee realty trust are clearly the most misunderstood trust out there okay and what happens is if you folks have one of these you know please just dusted off and checked the schedule beneficiaries 'cause that's who really owns it and that's the scary part if you got one of these in the schedule a beneficiary says that children three kids listed you know. Equally owning the property as beneficiaries and they're the owners and that's the problem with that you've actually given it away if you put it in there so I guess and ultimately to be protected from the nursing home if it's in there. But again it's more akin to the idea that you accidentally gave away your property and even know the kids probably don't even know. So not a good idea now if it says if the schedule of beneficiaries happens to be you mom and dad and husband wife. Then you haven't done anything currently that's what you drive and adhere very they haven't done anything they've basically. I don't see them so often because all real estate lawyers use them all okay and it just goes out. So it's basically if if you're listed mom and dad as the beneficiaries than you took the property from yourself but it trusting gave it right back to yourself. Now there if not avoiding probate nor is it protected from the nursing homes so you struck out completely let them be careful at these. We have a lot of topics to cram into one our show here on government agency that truck. Harry and tell you right now chuck. Pleasant surprise. For the market the Dow up 127. Points. But I came in at 530. Futures were up I think maybe ten points and down guys rallied them. Yeah it's it's it's a rally today this is an average that really has been range bound since about mid march right now closing in on about two months. We've been bouncing between about 174. On the down side and about 18150. On the upside here. Seeing a bounce off of that today. Remains to be seen whether or not we hold that level but it's a market that in the last. Couple months has shown that it is at least a little bit more. Calm but. The one thing that you always got to watch is a market like this where it's calm but there's no real direction for any couple months. Means there's usually some type of move combing. It in the near future there and so I think you do have to be aware. You know this is not a market that is just steadily marching upward which usually the sign of healthy market and this is one that is still looking for a long term direction and hasn't found there's. You know I think you can make the case right now. That stocks are probably a little bit overvalued. And I wouldn't be surprised you see your retest of some of those those we saw in January or February at some point later this year. I hope not now not to interviews are gonna have during this hour will be joined by Brian Dalton from the billing and firearms academy will be talking about. Eight California ruling that could pave the way for Smart gun mandates. That's a bigger story than you might think and then in that at 1145. Will be joined by Craig fields from the IBEW. 2321. Will be talking about. The Verizon strike they'd been out now truck I think since April 13. Yeah my guess was they were going to I had done it may fourteenth you over the weekend as my date of the strike would ensue they've been over a month now and I think that you knew you get that one paycheck missing and you say OK I can deal with this but when that second paycheck doesn't come in you know. That was what I was figuring it would kind of push people to the point where is it okay we need to do something and still no movement yet. Some talks that are ongoing but no lie no final deal being reached. We do know that they've agreed to restart negotiations that we special we've heard so we're gonna find out as much as we can about that topic. Before we do that though we're gonna jump into how battery. Ride battery powered rides could transform your commute did you know that there is more. Work being done on an electric bicycles. Then there is on electric vehicles cars. I don't even know an electric bicycle was before I read you didn't I don't know I didn't know was a real thing you know a video and electric by school is now. It is this a real thing that the battery pack for electric bicycles about the size of the role of dimes says not not a large democratic battery. But they can power a bicycle. To go at a rate of 25 miles an hour. For twenty miles which is that's pretty far you know the especially not many people are gonna have more than ten mile commute that they're doing on the bicycle yet. It's effectively what they are they can either take over the peddling completely empower the bicycle or they can simply assist you and so makes it easier. For you to use and what's interesting is that in not in China 60% of all battery production. Goes into electronic bikes I had no idea it was that big thing well here's the thing. In the northeast. Indeed it's never gonna take off because the network and commute because of our weather. Where exactly is leaders seem more people biking to work you do but not January. Race knowing his history still is the greatest seasonal it is seasonal here in new England and if you're driving from. You know. Boston to Springfield you know and use your bicycle and there's a lot of people that have long commutes but. If you go to. Like I would think of Los Angeles even double crossing into so's they don't have negative though it on the big downtown. It's not like hard metropolitan cities spread out there. But in some of the Asian cities that we talk about rain all over China. Three of them see like Singapore yet but it by schools make an awful lot of these things are expensive so much money. They're not cheap the ones that we saw listed here when it's 3600. Dollars and other one is 2100 dollars in the what's 5000 I mean. These are not cheap so it remains to be seen whether or not. That they're able to catch on. Ian you know large enough numbers because most people are gonna 5000 dollars for a bicycle not going to you know it's partly whistle and it's cheaper. Might be actually think what what what what what's the most you've paper by school. I can tell you what it paid. I want to. I don't know we wanna go down that 12500. Dollar for by school would would he do sitting in my garage what's fly doesn't do anything special with the cook for you to racing. The racing has helped clean the toilet Tony 500 dollars this I don't an average net twice. And I and I spent 200 bucks. And he is just the technical and old roommate gave me as though an estimate of the game due out icicles are expensive you wanna buy nice. But if you see the guys riding around on Saturday morning the series bikers at a robotics are paying three to five grip for a bike Alia. Yeah it's it's it's unbelievable how expensive they are but. I just I don't know if the general public wants to pay that much I think if you get the price point down the southern city I think a bow out I don't know. A southern Miami suggested city Miami. Tampa if you Jacksonville. College callous if college campuses the college kids are gonna that are at the money to pay. Actually I think if you could get it down to under a thousand bucks yourself 999 or something like that. I think you indicated it could have a place I think if you're selling it for 2503000. Dollars. There's a lot of people who might want to buy it but campaign what do you figure the climate New England. You how many what percentage of the year do you think he could use a bicycle and based on the climate we have 2% of the year now. If I would say between. Depending on the year between 55 and 70% and yes somewhere it's in general you can say between may and September is a definite no 43 degrees when I drove this may have September's a definite April and October kind of vary depending on the year and you make it. Parts of the November or march but it might be a couple days here and there. You know I just figured it is you know because Pete. Don't have the money is a lot of people that can't afford to buy a car. Right can't afford to ensure Carr can't afford to park a car wouldn't lead we talked about the cost of maintaining the vehicle. In the city of Boston feels like thirteen hundred bucks a month by time you ensured it he found a parking spot for you need car payment to pay the gas. The plane and yet it's somewhere in that like 200 bucks a month in a one car if you can the big thing in bosses if you can strip out parking. Yeah that that's huge component can't put. Even without that you know people say oh I get my car payment down to you know 400 a month or something now is still pay an additional three to 400 a month on top of that in terms of taxes. Insurance gas and mean it it adds up to where you're paying your somewhere around 80101000. Dollars a year for the car when you all the you know we're EC a lot of bicycling is in Europe you go to Torrey considered cities yes or been to Copenhagen. Coach it isn't like 50% of people like to work there you know why he carte pricing gasoline is nine bucks and they've also built they're attacked I thought tactic that. Imagine pay nine bucks oh I can't imagine that they they also built their whole traffic system around bikes Wear is that you try to go through a an American city on a bike yeah. You're gonna get killed. It like it's it's just half the cities are evenly built to deal with play to help us on me and I gotta tie I'm gonna I'm gonna let take exception to that because. In the city of Boston. In my car I have been hit by ice bicycles on several occasions that it be embarrassed if you open your door you all as they were. Roland are you talking on the unlike. In traffic and they run into me yet I think there on the road they do then they're reading unit now like Mimi you know fallen in line you know Italy and they they they don't practice any kind of safety. This girl runs in my car. The ones that really bother me of the ones that go the wrong way unlike a one way street. And then they yell at you because like you're like driving down the middle nearly just as you want me to respect you UF shoots from receipts to history I want to attend the ones who ignore the red light. Just go left Purdue and they like yell at some guy because like he's actually taken like the green light that he's yeah I believe. I'm not an expert in firearms but I know somebody who is his name is Brian Dalton from the New England firearms academy. When we come back we're going to be talking to Brian about a federal appearance court in California they are expected to rule soon. On whether states can force firearms manufacturers. To incorporate safety devices in their products this is a development that could have a broad a affect. On whether and how quickly. President Barack Obama's recent call for more Smart guns takes effect wanna give his opinion on it. Money doesn't really dark but Berrian chuck do. You've got the financial exchange on the financial exchange radio network. Brian Dalton is from the Philly inquirer academy he is my instructor by the way he's the one that. He'd be my class from my license to carry. He joins us now to talk about this California ruling that is expected I don't Bryant. Very OEU good good so I wanted to talk about this really but first could you describe to us what a Smart guy news as opposed to the types of guns that you're teaching me how to use few weeks ago. I get through and all the time has been a couple of different variations. Arms but the question designed from the California or control. Turn eighties early nineties. A fire Roberts sitting opposite human problem where you're fight the fighting and are on the weapon retention. Do it released the magazine. And dropped the bag and and firearm would be a function and work with soccer. I mean you know that you problem with that as well on the opposite it used fire right. It so this particular firearm is talking about much of our starters for us I think it's the legislature's. It's it's a radio frequency. Hopefully it's its Arch Coal watched speed but it sure are. So they'll. All the only rights to be so lucky you hear it on right the problem. So he has been a radio frequency is an issue they are on the the president wants the mandate that all federal agents are these. This that this little water that stopped but in 2002. Which cleanup. On New Jersey. Passed a law that when this technology becomes available. That they are they going to be anti teacher used. Anybody who has a Gunner just police officers. I guess everybody at any you know but my question is. How old they were actual. Bullet voting looked into Rex wrote pretty distinct firearms. Wrote just beaten farms that are produced it right. And it takes trust issues that's beyond your one Compuware German octopus producing. Yet. Core hole. It will wood into the cost firearms to a local. You know produced alleged that the west and that there's so much you know produce you know some shots. Yeah I would think Smith & Wesson would be in favor of all Brian because let's say you have a revolver right is this they've got to block. And you want to end and they pass a law. That all of these have to be fingerprint enabled there are some it was some waited so only Brian Dalton are only very Armstrong can use very Armstrong's gun. They'll make a fortune visited to sell new guns. Yeah up by. Don't you you'll like that I don't want evolved does that OK I I want to read write this stuff. By the states that have the fingerprint and which he has stated he came right Greg Owen showed me when I took my class exactly know they have one of those chicken just simply projecting your art are. They open up yet in his firearm exposed. You have where he and she knows woman has more or are they don't function and they don't or. What is an agent. We're mandated to have firearms. Has auditors as wet as gravel or it won't function used eastern departments which they out if they happen. Use the still these are. It's not like he. I would like this even beat up a little bit by the private. Meaning that there and be its it circulation grow out of everybody's. These guys had these watchers are morally. Square means doing whatever they do you. That don't function and means it is federal agent Aaron. We're gonna keep you backed off California's school. Sort of the end all or opt out. We still trust them just a little more in my own personal it again before they could from a crime. Standpoint it would news like it would mean that. And every gun would have a fingerprint. Right. Yes that's all of our ask the coach says. He just wouldn't work so that guide it's robbed in the local 7-Eleven. You know the heat even if he has a gun. If it's not his gun and defeatism a license for its not gonna work piece. Now so the criminals are still gonna have illegal guns into the at all those off to off the market guess. Number and car and really they have. I agree. They had bought while back. August we've won some kind of my quote my quote acting immune yell. One in every around Renaud electric. That's led the Feinberg the the you know Larry it's armor has not caught in the what happened yup a really well certainly irked by. The only universe should just too expensive. Era we just chilled industry. And I. Same way you view what happened 1867. Winchester perhaps right which saw yeah yours yeah. How do you actual rightful write Acosta. He's going to be and eight these things don't don't really have an obligation on the you know ordaining. Remember the one to the video you showed me where the cops shot himself in the foot when you sooner state or federal agent right he is is a federal agent guys. And he's giving at a gun safety class to budget state of the gagged young kids eat is our call with those kids like ten years old Bryant. It is demonstrators for hearts aren't in any shot himself in the foot. Does he didn't clear the chamber. Like that was one of the things I learned when I took my class all we just stick around you really didn't just pop which finger on her hand India and you were at the bottom dropped its technology they're all because people were right. And with the current or not look we're. What about so now and we received shooting that happened that I spoke much yeah I had to go on and so. What kind of a knock on yet yet you carry a firearm and saw. He shot his neighbor that he shot somebody else in the in the Kathy so he shot himself caught a deep hole that's yeah yeah yeah they don't want across all right right. You know you can't Harry Ira to. Look at an event or at least who are. Actually it happened on the content. But if people would agree I think that is all world. They used every. No comments were you at 3 o'clock in the morning to job and he's got killing. It means that you really need to learn need to be secured we have war not Ayers. Based so just eat or regain his immunity. Some of technology that limited one company. Magically get on board spot. Well that's I I I hate to. Confessed Brian but that's what I was trying to figure out like I'd I'd I'm trying to make money on this idea until I'm sensitive to gun safety in and by the way you guys give a great class at any firearms that. I was trying to figure out how to make some onions but thank you hit thanks for joining us Brian. Impression Burma Brian Dalton New England firearms academy. Looking at this. From from an outsider tuchman do you think laws like this makes cents. Well I think that Brian brings up some pretty reasonable. Issues that you have to work out you know for example few of dirt on your hands and so forth does that affect your ability to use the firearm even though it's yours I mean that in the antique guns this I would he do with others. Like I he had some cool guns that I got that player out there are some very real functionality issues that you have to deal with because if you're a situation where. You know you've been knocked down there you know you hit it treated every gun in the country but you know you'll never get them first eulogy for the criminals are still gonna have the illegal go big it if you're not gonna do animals though it's. I think it's it's a conversation that you need to have in terms of what what are ways that we can figure this out. But you know based on what I've heard and read the technology's not quite there yet to this point. You know and I'll give you the example what might my iPhone there's sometimes if I've been you know if I've been sweating or something I can't use the fingerprint ID there in a talk about getting into a phone not needing it gonna fight you know by needed or something. So it's like this it the technology I don't think is quite bare right now. And I think that 'cause of that unity you just need a wonderful this is the only direction no gun laws of California passes this. I can assure you it's desperate. What you imagine is going to be count up the Supreme Court. All you know media are they're good they're going to be all kinds challenges to its that it it's it's not set in stone I think at this point there's a new shop. Lifting law in California this is in fact already in place. And we're talk about what has happened to the reach of shoplifting in California. Since the passage of this law. By some geniuses out west that's our next topic from our insurer match dot com studios. You gun barrier and strongest financial exchange on the financial exchange radio network. The need for speed that's the line from the movie top gun. We want a name though the names of the two characters that say that 68680. Is our text number which characters in the movie top gun say that famous line. I feel the need the need for speed. And again tech's number 68680. So we let's talk about this shoplifting law. That. Has passed in California. It keeps any crime any shoplifting. Under 950 dollars to a misdemeanor. Yep and there have been enough reports from some stores in California that 'cause of this they've actually seen an uptick. In shoplifting with people simply being able to take more merchandise out of the store and just because if it's misdemeanor a lot of times cops are leaving and you put the effort to deal with that like this beating six. Is it would be like getting a half. As Dick and they've had instances truck or people locked in and you'll see an item in 0800 dollar like that you know they're having stolen a lot of drones. See it's it's interesting though because as much as they've seen problems there's another state that did something similar which South Carolina which hasn't seen any change. Prime the gun laws but at. That couldn't get a I don't know I think it's his but somebody shoplift issued but it's it's just you know this again I think you need to get more data on this that's exactly what's going on here. And they haven't had a problem in California Italy because the they're saying that people who lick the goal in two. Place you know think about how many items in the store. Are selling and they literally just run out the door with a clear well you know and am I gonna get caught even if I do get caught whats the consequence is no outs. Guess here's the question where we're do you think you would draw the line in terms of misdemeanor to fail. I'd have to know him is like that they don't give you go in they'll steal you know a budget comic books for 25 or thirty dollars. You don't want them carrying around a felony for the for right you know likewise if someone comes in it is stealing you know 500 dollars stereo system it's OK you know the you have to start to weigh what it is. I was a little steal that jacket. Let's start also is another thrown it over the shoulder and went from the idea that they they still make those right yeah you just put it on his shoulder and walked out like he came in that was walking around blades and violence and to an astronaut then. I don't know. They just day I look at it and I I just think if you're a retailer. Right let's say you're managing. Wal-Mart or you're managing a tee at target. There's a lot of stuff in your store with maybe holding right you're just gonna run out the door. They're gonna going to change room. They're gonna put on three letter that apple that it was a that's cost of doing business like they are people like if he values no consequence talk about three years thrillers according to old ball would've changed anyways. The lows it was 400 dollars and blows a misdemeanor. So you're taking like four T shirts it doesn't matter if feel bad for the guys trying to run a business. If they try to run an honest business. And there's no law in force and then if I'm sure they use any kind of physical force against shoplifting they probably the retailer. Right abate in the the managers told a priest who worked at a grocery store. And this guy came into the store and you stealing stakes race and he had this big trench coat and not throwing up. State. So the manager. Fred demise this would Jolie is nameless and uses a little Italian guy. And he stood at the door as he knew the got a steal and he stood at the door and said you're not getting by me while this guy acts right hander Joey gets a black guy. When the home office came as a company called shopped well in in news and weather into New York the home office came out you know they said. They gave Joey a hard time they said look it's a business deal but more that we don't like you eat wheat lead only to getting into physical confrontation with the. What's it's it's never been an easy thing to deal with you see it any type of retail it's it's across the board there it's. In unfortunately you seem retailers they have to effectively write off part of as the cost of doing business there's never been a deep there's no one size fits all solution to. You can certainly say OK what can we do to fix the law here but we've seen again in South Carolina. You can have up to 2000 dollars okay in merchandise before comes felony and they haven't seen any problems they haven't seen an optic there. So it's like. I just I don't know what the what the overall solution so I don't either I just I you know I look at the business owner. And in you know these attendant tendency to look at it from the civilian perspective. But I you have to have some compassion for the guys that are running these businesses. Does is just not the right ended up fully agree but again the question like at what level does some white kids steal a comic books lately where do you cross that line I don't know where it is it is too late. And I I don't know I don't have enough information on to be able to see where that line should be. The unions have been trying to penetrate. Amazon in North America now for a long time. And they've been very unsuccessful. They I don't think any Amazon shop. Has gone union it would have 90000 workers 90000 people in their film it's just in the warehouse that's not including. You know the home office and and robotic guys in the R&D guys and all that somehow they don't because they. You know you you we heard stories every day's stories in the New York Times about how. Terrible the working conditions were at Amazon how bad can they be if they kick of the union. Well it's I think that Amazon just is able to because they innovate so quickly they can almost change you know what job descriptions are it just becomes very difficult for unions to get in there. Just paid about twelve bucks an hour. When they think ought to I think it's around fifteen or so you factor in all the benefits right so it's that's before health insurance and indeed the if you include the stock rocketed you know it's the what am I gonna give kudos to Amazon. They give bear their their laborers stock options depth of and that's that's pretty damn good which it's it's not something that you see a lot of companies you know those types of workers and in that might be part of the reason why. You've seen. The unions not be able to break into effect is just because you know these I think employees there may feel even if what they're not making a ton in based compensation. But if you begin Amazon's stock even if you just get you know one or two shares a year for the last couple years you know something that looked like a few hundred bucks all of a sudden is a few thousand. So badly and it hasn't gone when you join a union he you know you're giving up it's generally about two to four hours per month. In fees so yeah they get that's the the the cost to be a member of the union so your make and twelve bucks an hour. That means you know you're given up anywhere from 24 to fifty bucks a month to be a member of that union what does the union do forty. Right away it would take questions are they going to be able to make that up on the back and you know is being part of the union going to get enough that it's worth the cost he Amazon's had to deal with unions in Europe. And this is fully unionized in Europe I think they are and and that's you we talk about Amazon.com a lot knee you know many of your customers of theirs but if you want to talk about something. That could deep rail their business or at least. Add to the cost of running their business it would be if those if those those warehouses when union. Yeah his they could shut that companies now the you know the union workers have the ability to say okay we're not going to work if all 90000 of them. Go on strike also an inept start going back to store plans on spending so much on a box. BR but even with that track. Need the there's they're investing heavily in robotics. But he he still have 90000 workers where workers a lot it is it's I mean it's it's a massive workforce at this point. And in the continuing to grow that workforce somewhere around seven to 10% a year depending on the years you can. Up next were to be joined by our friend Craig fields from the IBEW. 2321. He's a union guy and he's gonna give us an update on the strike apparently these rumors afoot. That there are negotiations going on between the union and the corporation. Hi I know is over the weekend Sunday apparently. We'll find out what the status of that is and what's keeping them out on strike what are the issues that are preventing. Right here the fact that I'm aware. Verizon workers have been working without a contract since August of last year and they walked off the job on April 13 that's a little more. Then a month ago. I'm also told that on over the weekend on Sunday. Then labor secretary Thomas Perez said he met with both sides in Washington to try to come to a resolution of this strike. We're now joined by Craig fields. From the union to give us an update on the Verizon strike hi Craig thanks for joining us right or good so. Other than what I've read in the newspaper. Wit what's going on what is the status of the strike. Spent some restrictive that we are still. This is as far as every member who's on the street is concerned yup we're the third place we are but we're trying to get our message out. We are we're making sure that Verizon Wireless. Our customers via prepare locations in hopes that they will they'll support us and then boycott Verizon Wireless. As far as where we think things will go in terms of our bargaining. We are hopeful at this point. That the secretary of labor. Will energize this just peace peace talks right now what I would like no. Is supposed to occur at a meeting tomorrow that would include secretary. The president of IBEW TWA. And the CEO from Verizon I believe there's also going to be a lot of people from. From Verizon. Barking. Up departing team but from the people in this scene there are you and there's quite a recent discussion about. How we're gonna proceed. So what are your top three issues what are the Big Three stumbling blocks to a deal. I will. The the number one thing obviously is our job security language you don't ever job nothing else matters. We currently have language. That's been on our contracts in 1994. The property wanted to take that out they have made revisions to their proposal which now saying that. Stable allow us to keep that language if we give them others say so right now we don't have a because of must be except the entire. Bargaining package. We don't get that so that's that's number. Doubt language basically says that the company can't lay off employees. For internal and just because they decide to change the process as they do things by war. Where they wanna have their business won't impact whether persecute Robert can't be certain that external and the second biggest deal is drops. Without jobs job security is useless. The company is looking for languished that would allow them to move Coulter and work more calls network overseas theory have a number of different centers. And the company has told the told the bargaining team across the table we intend to shrink the number in the US and increased one little oversee. Language that they're looking for right now would allow that to make those moves. And by parents union represented workers from. Probably the biggest the other biggest item is. Retiree health care caps. All of our language previously opened this current contract involved certain about. Talk about a dollar model limit but my percentage limit on how are retiree health care cost could be increased these people left. You know what a certain you know amount of money and with a certain idea what cost should be it and we feel that it's only right the company should allow us to negotiate kept him out. We aren't too on that outside because I see in the private sector all the time people give me a perfect example. Greg gag you guys that retire from GE. They company reneges on the health care five years after the change the deal. And in that I mean to me that's kind of disgusted because for a couple hours. The blonde it's it's sort of like those parameters used to comply. If you play your cards right just say Japan right to do things right you'll be able to retire. So people make these plans and they they wait for the other dvds where they have that a lot of money. And how are going to be one of those things where you're at but it's also not just to be individual with his economic link here. What happened to these people where they gonna get there currently is their. Where are they gonna get the care quality and get the coverage Greg anybody across a former oil subsidy or something else is that going to be a cost of. Or anybody crossing the picket line he would stand and together use are you losing guys. By elect as its pretty strong and there's a couple stragglers come from different locals still have our cross particular local we have actually one person com. We have to take huge offensive has not just because there. They're crossing the picket line but because those people will expect to get the same thing that we're gonna get out of our country they protections and benefits without doing a. Ray Allen how many paychecks of the guys miss so far. They haven't got the paychecks since whatever the week after the thirteenth was total I've probably talked to three fortunate to. Craig fields IBEW 2321. Give us an update. I cannot say those are tough issues because the the problem is I read an article in the journal today. A lot of those jobs with the AT&T similar jobs yup they're not even moving to India they're going robotic down the series no one's getting them. It's it's it's not if it's if so I think the number of jobs in the job security issues. Are going to be tough. The health care caps I can't tell you how many times I've met with the employee that worked for a major fortune 500 company. And they'll tell you yep I was told that have health insurance or Medicare supplement insurance after retired. They get they'll get screwed until health care is the big one. And as you mentioned you see that that that is a promise that I think gets reneged on more than just about any other one out there. And it's it's one that you know if you had to pick hill to die on that that's kind of where you want to be just because. You know you you see that is something. That companies you know they keep trying to go back to that well and keep trying to go back after people were retired and it's you know people don't have at the chance to really do anything there. In that leverages give they don't have the leverage at this point either. In that movie top gun the character to make that infamous line I feel the need the need for speed that would be maverick and goose back. Back in 1986 it certainly was Jeff for east where I'm at the right answer their takes on the travel month speaking of the movies Captain America civil war. Now that that's a lot of steps to punish stars and in as I mean really it's just loaded up his ego Robert Downey junior you've got who else. I don't even Chris we're replace Captain America Chris Evans doesn't get Chris Evans Scarlett Johansson and Paul Rudd and Jeremy Renner Paul broad. Martin Freeman Tom solidly it's it's just like the loaded kinda ridiculous at this point minute. And it's eat you talk about where does it finally end up when it's all and onto the Star Wars movie to put this in perspective. Okay Star Wars movie if you look at the first couple weeks it's trailing where the Star Wars. It's trailing Star Wars okay this is another Disney production yes of Star Wars in the the first two weeks just to put this in perspective in America did 651 million dollar okay Aaron ups are and that's that's total okay.
