This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and show Oksana. Tour exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck son. It's time that trucks sought and I were together it was the year 2016. That he told me definitively. That he watched pot would in fact oil. I've been watching this plot the last two and a half weeks waiting for that doubt if the 40000. And son of a gun we still have not done it. Hybrid but he buried Armstrong and trucks ought to back from his two week hiatus where he. It celebrated Christmas and got merit congratulations struck and welcome back. It's it's good to be back and I do want to happily announced that I'm still married I've made it eleven days at this point which makes me somewhat of a veteran I think. And I've got a lot of good advice to hand out to people who are looking to get married now. Currently beat the over so that's true pretty good significantly beef the over. Well the the we have been waiting in fact very patiently. For this out hit 20000 points out of it then we got so close last week trip we earth in ten or eleven points it. And then yesterday we pulled back well that worked there and now word heck were over under points away. Yeah keep continuing really to bounce around just shy of that 20000 mark and really you know we've been stuck in this range now. Pretty much since mid December if you go back to December 10 or eleventh that's really where we got into this range time in 19100750. On the Dow. And it's been a pretty tight trading range since then we've gotten I think the highest we got was 19999. We got within half a point actually. Back on December 20 of getting there couldn't push through and it's just kind of been muddling along since then. Earlier today we got a jolts report and that demonstrated that we had in this is going back to November so it's not terribly current. Data but there were five point 52 million jobs open across the country that's a healthy number a lot of job openings if you're looking for work. You know there's there's going to be employment available to you may not be the same week that you used to earn in a maybe not been seen field. In which he used to work but there is there are jobs fail. Yeah and this was a slight increase in the number of available jobs from the previous month it was about. An additional 70000 job openings compared to what we saw in October. As you mentioned this is somewhat of a backwards looking number not not backwards looking but it's delayed because it takes a long time. To get this data so this is data from November. That we do have here in in particular you know you look at some of the industries that you want to want to watch in manufacturing job openings did ticked up slightly there. In I don't wanna point out that on a year over year basis. If you go back to November of 2015 the number of manufacturing job openings only 238000. In November of 2016. Up to 324000. So. There are open manufacturing jobs is just a matter of getting the right people with the right skills in the right place. Well that is the problem you you have it geographically. Challenge in many instances where you know you've got the available workers and there's no jobs available in those states but there are many jobs available in other states like. For instance I talked to Jackie pretty regularly and he'll tell you that in northern New Hampshire in nor in the resort area. Major problem in terms of trying to find eligible workers to people whether it's in the hospitality industry here. It is in any capacity. Major employer shortage in northern northern New Hampshire don't find it very interesting that. In a world that has been made smaller by all of the technology we have we're now it's easy to outsource jobs to different countries we find it so hard to get people in rural America involved somehow. It's it is it's a little confusing almost won it. It is confusing that you you look at northern Hampshire rural certainly yup but the Wear their suffering is. You know people who work in the hotels and the restaurants trying to find a shift in northern New Hampshire they have at Dickinson tied up. Finding good shots up there anyway speaking of food let's move on to this story related to Chipotle Mexican Grill. Fourth quarter same store sales down four point 8%. Anatolia that's pretty good when you consider weird they were a year. It is an ear at the point now where you're starting to see a year over year comps. That are taking into account a picture that is completely after. All of the the health issues that they had. In the fall of 2015 city of finally starting to get a picture of where you're actually you started either grow or recover the business. I still think at some point the next year you need to start showing year over year. Okay and I think they will I I do this is like I believe it'll either be first quarter. Of 2017 added approached the first quarter is very late in the second quarter. Of 2070 but here's the big problem. They've cut it they're spending a lot of money on advertising to get people back in the stores which is Smart. But they're getting killed by food costs specifically. Meet your avocado shortages and big increases in the price of avocados. You heard any of the ads that they've been doing this for the first time ever in the last month or so I've actually heard chipotle dad's night and every used to hear him on the radio at all. I've been so unimpressed but apparently they are doing their job getting people back into their restaurants. They are doing pretty well there either they're they're turning the corner the big question is he in the integrate their technology so he can order your food online much like you can with a panera. And with the Starbucks. Org and you so you said that you can do that chick fully to where you can walk in and pick up your bag. Yet to clay it's a slightly different process there it's what you actually do you load money into the apps that you actually prepaid for your food and manages Deb it's off of whatever you put in their suits a slightly different process but it's not is something that I've used actually I had the couple weeks go I forgot my wallet at the office and I was neo palace grounds for lawlessness and liked it I could use the chick boy app so would actually save me there. But that's the big criticism towards Tripoli is distorting their lines right it is and and that's something they still need to work through and I think part of it is just there's a little bit more simply required when you're building a Brito also mean you're always gonna have a little bit longer process there because it's not a simple. As bought and patty lettuce tomato dawned. It's you know you've got okay I've got to pull this thing I've got a steam and I've got to put this in that it's a more complicated process so I never I don't think. You're going to have the same workflow that you do at a burger joint. But I think they can still continue to improve by using more technology there to hopefully alleviate some of that weight. And congratulations. To Clinton's football team they upset Alabama last night in. What might go down as one of the greatest college football championship games in history chuck. Yeah a lot of people talking about this as one of the best championship games the only one that I think a lot of people are saying is close was that 2005 championship where Vince Young. The aide Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush led. USC team but this game I'll be honest I didn't stale thwart I was trying to and I fell asleep in the third quarter just because it was too late. I am a strong proponent of pushing this game at 5 o'clock eastern time so I can stay awake for. But it was up by all accounts just a phenomenal finish to this game. Well it it sure was and congratulations to Clemson. Investors are dumping gold at the fastest pace in years and really the exit out of school has occurred since Donald Trump was elected. Are are you surprised that you're seeing that much of an exit out of gold during a time when we're talking about inflation potentially increasing. Well I I think we I am so I'm not surprised because the Fed has said we're gonna raise interest rates yup and historically. Gold does not respond well in a rising interest rate environment school likes inflation gold go up with inflation yup. But if the Fed is going to raise interest rates safe investors would turn would gold investors are going to be. Right they're gonna say well I can buy a thirty year treasury at 5% 6%. And heck I know a lot of people that would cash in their goal gladly to be of the by thirty year treasury five or 6%. Oh there's there's a ton of people and I can tell you. Working out now we now have bogged this CME the Chicago Mercantile Exchange does now have their year end futures opened for the Fed Funds rate. And what we're seeing right now. Is that there's a decent chance about a 33%. Chance right now. That you end up with to fight a 23% chance that you end up with three so that is kind of the starting numbers that we have. As we head deeper in the 2627. Team now. But pretty much the market saying look there's an over 50% chance that we get at least two hikes. Yeah like I think. You know I would say based on what we're seeing for employment numbers and wage growth struck yup I'm on in the 33 rate hike camp for next for this year. Which grossed pretty good right now wage growth is EU a year over year on wage growth in Europe to two point 9%. You're starting to get put in there it's we've been we've been waiting for so long I feel like we've been talking about this for the last three years I think at this point. But we're finally starting to turn the corner I think and is just a matter if you do get a little bit tax reform coming in the first hundred days of this administration. I mean you could have some very strong growth comic potentially. The president has mandated that the health care law be repealed and we're talking about the Affordable Care Act. Congress is an tough spot they maybe the they don't have a plan ready to go at least they don't have a plan ready to go that they think it can get through the house and the senate. In the next segment we're rejoined by Richard Rubin to talk about this whole health care debate. Because the Republicans are in a tough spot they need the tax revenue those increased obamacare taxes. They need in order to bridge the gap until they have law that's race yet through the house and the senate. So that's our next topic from our insurer match dot com studio. Breaking business news daily boldly. On top of breaking financial news by becoming a member of the carries per game blog on the financial exchange showed dot com and sign up today. President elect from. Is pressuring Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act also known as obamacare. In it the same breath the health watch taxes complicate the GOP's repeal strategy. Joining us now to help straighten this out is Richard Rubin from the Wall Street Journal Richard thank you very much for joining us. So are the Republicans based on what you see going on in unit talking to congressional leaders. Are they going to repeal obamacare the spring. They're gonna try I am right now or in. It has no word on exactly hear what happened separate from the text questioners the question of whether they should repeal it now. Wickedly effective stay and club with a replacement plan or whether they want have to replace them by hand in hand when may repeal it and that of the good getting hashed out as we speak. Would be wearing your venturing. Predict exactly how that thought the plan aren't. What begs the question what you do in the interim lady like let's say they're successful and repealing it could see theoretically have the votes to get rid of it. But what do they do on an interim basis for the millions of people that are covered by. They've said as they would. Create a sort of orderly transition that things would change in the near term and eventually would change that probably easier said than done because. You know insurance companies and carriers than healthcare providers all wanna plant a year or two ahead and so. There's an experiment. Desire on the part of the industry source certainty about what bill deterrence marketable like it twenties came between nineteen. And sheep's all of their planning it's going out today habit that's something that we're certainly going to be watching. As being put forward the details of a repeal vote which we have not been yet did not. Sort of congressional the leader west. Repeal bill that Betancourt. We're not only that maybe they could probably get a repeal through. Given their control of the house and senate. But the difficulty that I think they're gonna run into is in order to replace that they have to get sixty votes in the senate. And they don't have sixty votes and don't have anywhere near sixty votes in this. Exactly and what they're kind of party the Democrats roll help that is. If and when the laws repealed the Democrats will content people want to help improve health and Japan also turned system that. Because it at that time. Actually that's actually going to work but that's that that's sort of their goal right now is. Different level wage is now with the votes in the pulpit Democrats come to the table later to work. To prevent that kind of problems are packed up for the destruction. Richard what about that taxes Ian because that's a bid the the disdained. That is held towards the affordable care for a bomb a care. Much of it is related to the taxes that were paying you know higher earners are paying. An extra. You know 4%. In federal income tax on their dividend income on earned income just basically across the board tremendous amount of tax increases. That occurred because it. Will the Republicans. Repeal those taxes. In this interim period in one of which he described. Beebe and big big big testy right run repeal bill last year that President Obama vetoed and well that's built you know pass in the early 2016 and at that all of those factors both. Both Spock the taxes on higher but it didn't do it healthcare or industries he's on health insurance and pharmaceuticals in medical quite. All of that would have been repealed as of December 31 when he Christine and with immediate. In fact companies retroactive from when they pass it they. They haven't committed that at a time and haven't said yeah our will be released her updated repeal bill. It's gonna today that the taxes will be gone as to report first seventeen it is a couple reasons for that wind is unity. If you get rid of those taxes than you need to pay her. So big and down the road Republicans don't like reading taxes but I don't wanna like committing cut in taxes and come back and have to re imposed thing. And they're also turned on that transition period of having that money available in Tikrit a big deficit problem that the next couple of years to be in need. Bonded on the transition and so. It's not a rock and roll happened I do urgent health industry taxes or to those are broader pact is. I think council. I would think you're gonna do lose a lot of their base if they don't get rid at least those income taxes to set of people over. A lot of people were very upset by that and they're looking at dancing to add to vote for that that was something that got people to the booths the poll. It but I don't know how people react scheme answer is. Well those facts are going the way they're going away and I'm just me an update here. Particular first 29 degree first 220 that it took out there a decision because one. Investment in them yet. Dividends which you can't really control the timing of that. You know sort capital gain is really strong evidence that people we meet you realized capital gain Hillary goes down and so. He can do would have done capital gains and but it has control over. Maybe waiting isn't necessarily the worst thing for taxpayers because they've been you'll note coming. Right great yes you know they OK we didn't get that in seventeen that we get for sure on. January 1 of eighteen. I would expect he'll he would meet the in the bill for each of them back it's just not it was not clear. They've they've not be commuted the idea that it will be in it and it will be essential. OK Richard thank you very much for your time appreciate it. Richard Rubin Wall Street Journal complicated issue in the unique. The you've got a president who's the pulpit saying hey get rid of this thing. But they don't have a place they need they don't have anything at least they can get through that house. While the other thing that you have to remember when you talk about the house is that a lot of those members were elected by districts that wanted. Things such as a balanced budget amendment and so when you talk about taking away this tax revenue. It's all well and good until all of a sudden you have to start cutting programs that your constituents actually used and so that's one of the things. That I think that house is going to have to try to figure out as saying. Look if we're going to get rid. Of this tax revenue had we do it in such a way. That we don't affect the programs that are constituencies the most and that's going to be something that is complicated to deal with I mean it's. It's not an easy issue. You know it's all well and good when he say look we're gonna cut a trillion dollars in spending. When you start having to say look we're gonna pull million dollars here in a millionaire. You start getting you know into some real issues that affect people on the data they base. It's something that was very popular and you know they may need to get rid of it from an affordability standpoint was. Keeping kids on your insurance plan until they were 26 years old yup. That's one of the things it would go away and that's popular crossed party lines there's a lot of kids you know they might not graduate college until they're 2324 years old. And then they might wanna go to law school or grad school or you know oodles. But that 26 year old being on new insurance plan could end up being one of the victims. And and one of the things get sacrifice. Well we've got a couple different areas to mean also the that the ban on banning people with preexisting conditions and that was something that was a major component. Of the Affordable Care Act and so when you talk about getting rid of that. You know there are a lot of people. Who were able to finally pick up coverage because that that were denied previously but the only way they can keep that. Is if you keep the mandate otherwise you don't get no funding going in so it's a really difficult. You know. Kind of dance that they have to do in order to try to keep the peace that you want more getting rid of all the fat it came along with the. Right their poll question today it reverts back to our conversation regarding gold gold trading at 1192. Adults. We'd like to know whether you are bullish or bearish on gold. Deal making has really gotten off to a fast start in 2017 biggest start in seven years struck. Yet is we've seen more than eighteen billion dollars in mergers announced just on Monday alone and that brings the total value of all mergers and acquisitions this year. Up to about 35 point seven billion dollars which is over twice what we have seen at this point last year and you remember last year it seemed like every Monday we come in and we had another deal sometimes another two or three deals. And so far 2017 is kicking off in much the same way it seems like we are going to see. Continued deal making happening at this point. Three today united health scares off them are there acquiring surgical care affiliates for 2.3 billion. Then valiant. Agreeing to sell Dendreon. Four to see in power for 820 million had a big he looked up but then they're also selling their skin care brands to Loria Al. That valiant deal I don't know on the yet Dendreon they bought it for 500 million and they're selling it for 800 between them into the making some money. Yet they are making some money there and if you remember valley it's been through very difficult couple years. With some accounting problems and all kinds of issues related to their drug pricing and so forth. That they've had a very very difficult couple years here. An enlarged we're just trying to sell some pieces off to get out from under all of the debt that they've taken on in order to buy some of these companies. What is interesting in what is something. That that I do like to point out is that as you doozy. Emanate activity heat up. It's not always but it can be a sign that a bull market is starting to get towards its last legs so it is something to watch out for. But obviously the amount of deal making this year more than double what we've seen so far they're at at this point in 26 to. How do you feel about the argument that you could actually see another surge of deal making it tax rates come. If capital gains rates going down and corporate tax rates come down to is that going to incite even more merger and acquisition activity. I think it could in that could prolong and I could extend you know that the bull market that we've had. To this point I think if if you didn't get any type of tax reform he didn't see any type of change there. I think that what we're seeing would be a little bit more concerning to me but I think that tax reform. It is pretty likely when you take a look at the landscape out there now so. Even though Hayat height neo high levels of merger activity can be indicative. That you're kind of reaching. A turning point. I think they've given where we are in and where were potentially looking at from a fiscal perspective. I think that you actually may see this prolonged. You know we may see another year to but you're gonna see some bumps here I mean the fact is this has been. Still one of the strongest bull markets in history. And the fact is at some point it has to end we it it may or may not be Donald Trump's ball but at some point it has to end. And it's it's likely to be at some point the next few years. Well one would think him with the you really haven't had you hit quite a run. For eight years yeah due march of 2009. When we bottomed that you had a correction and eleven yeah you you were down quite a bit and eleven and he had a correction last year up. But in terms of you know thirty or 40% correction haven't had. Bought any even you just look at the economic growth we've now had 75 straight months of job growth that is the longest. Continuous record of job growth. In the history of the United States so at some point that just has to come to an end and again it doesn't mean that. It's it doesn't mean the world is coming to an end it's just you can't go whine creating jobs month after month after month just can't happen forever. And at some point you need to see things kind of balance back the other way it's just how business cycles work. The other day I was overhearing. One of my kids describe. Their parents that beam me. And they said well my dad's not old but he's definitely playing the back nine. Which means yeah. It that's almost bypassed it's almost like people gone from having no bank account no cash at all raid into that mobile payment world what are they doing and on that front. Yet a great point years being in a lot of emerging market people are the main thing we're mobile phone ready get. What we did here in the US going from computer and mobile on they went straight into mobile phone that. You know mobile payment went up 56 respect Matt Courter and they're doing over. And we're doing that they get a law he let them a buck per domain name but when you have over a 142 million domain name. I currently out there that really add the outbreak and that didn't sit so great because. There really isn't all that much capital and pictures that they need to make. To maintain the current business order growth going forward. There origin generate a. How to capture of a convert over it in secret of their revenue and if we cash while around a 120 for of their net ink. And because they don't really need to spend any of that on acquisitions. Or growth project. They can basically do repurchase shares and over there. And he and that when he while there has been in the might panic is made the number shared expanding that aren't from a 160 nearly 205. What a major competitors for them. The great thing is that when I'm in dot com and dot. They act as we exclude their registry that they have an agreement with. The industry regulator and the DOE UETOP Kirk as they can act as a registry dot com and dot net. The competition com in the form. Other top level domain and the one that aren't that popular that you know what you're being. Crop up like. Dot by it or something like cotton tree and gotten enter I know. Noted though that really the only competitors and when become the domain name dot com is by far no way to know. Command. Well over a third of the marketplace. Is gotten into a real domain name now. It is a real the. Domain and it actually. Command a pretty high price if you want it bad that their own sort of giving gotten and yeah. And and when that happens with the person who's doing it isn't that China isn't necessarily looking to get paid but think about their job. And I can tell you the parent is OK pain they don't mind. And so what happens is don't just pay them because if you just pay them it's gonna look like a gift. For Medicaid eligibility purposes and it's only gonna hurt you. If later on you going to the nursing meet some kind of a contract between the parent and the child worthy on to the child exactly. Between the care provider in the caregiver. And the care the recipient they need a personal care contract that needs to be drafted up. What that does is it cleans his the relationship and says look there wasn't intent here to get paid and you are providing a service and you actually have to report on your income tax return. Today it might be good days where we hit 20000 on the Dow had we might even close over 20000 on the home. Hi everybody it's Kerry and chuck and you know the market opened up truck in negative territory and now it's up 34 point 191921. Of speaking of the Dow of course. Well it's only fitting that on the day that I make my triumphant return we had potentially cross that milestone I've got my fingers crossed for the next five hours and we'll see what happens. We've got gold trading up five dollars and outs and that is our poll question today by the way are you bullish or bearish on the price of gold I would remind you. That gold tends to go down in value Indy rising interest rate environment the consensus. Is that we're going to receive somewhere two to three interest rate hikes in 2017 and logic would tell you that that might be bad for gold our listeners seem to agree. 16% have you. Are bullish as it relates to gold while 83%. To view our bearish as it relates to gold poodles will find out as the day goes by that I got gold trading up today. And 1192 announced a five dollars oil trading at 5207. Jock and we've had it too while you're away I think I sought as high as 56. Yeah I mean or boiled down a little bit there you've also seen natural gas pullback in the last week or two as well. On that gas has been as high as about 380 now at 328 after a little bit of a rally today. But commodities is a whole relatively stable it's. It's been a very quiet first week and a half its teams in the market aid. Dramatic departure from what we saw last year where I think it was either. What eater nine straight days down to begin twenty sixteenths of this this is a welcome departure firm with the way we started last year. It certainly is it certainly is and is speaking of down years Rhode Island and Connecticut have had a number of down years in a row. Aid the economy's in those two states have lagged the general economic recovery of the country and certainly. The region is the Rhode Island traditionally has the highest unemployment rate out of all New England. Followed closely by Connecticut. And they got some good news in that. Electric boat is going to be hiring 2000 workers just this year track they're gonna hire 2000 workers. About 700 of those jobs will be in quonset point Rhode Island the other thirteen hundred jobs will be in Groton Connecticut. Groton Connecticut is in New London county the most economically depressed county in all of Connecticut. Yeah and overall you're gonna have your it is the electric boat continuing. To add employees over the next decade while they're only looking to grow their overall workforce. From fourteen to 181000 people in the next fifteen years. There are a lot of people in that company. That are older today that are likely going to be retiring over that time to some estimates there have been as many as ten that they could be as many as 101000 jobs available. Due to attrition from electric boat. And I'm pretty outspoken saying look we need to get more people in. And get them into our training programs because it gives him an on day one. And be able to work on building a submarine there's a lot of training and a lot of specialized knowledge that goes into it and so they're trying to get more people. In two wac training programs so they can start working on these submarines which you know cost billions of dollars. In most cases you know that they've that you got you got a million moving parts on these things that keep them. Working for thirty to forty. Years and Gina are Mundo if the credit to her in the state around the governor of Rhode Island. She's announcing that they're gonna have a fund that'll set up it's being set up the train 500. More jobs at. Electric boat and they're using CC our community college Rhode Island to facilitate training. Yup and this is going to be it's going to cost about three point six million dollars to hire and train these 500 people. And die as we talked about it it was back in December maybe about a month and a half ago. Dead electric boat has now officially gotten approval for contracts that I believe take it out. To 20/20 seven now. As far as the boats they have bought in the pipeline so these are stable jobs they're pretty much you know set in stone at this point as far as the projects that they're working on. And I think it makes a lot of sense to why and get these people trained up because they're good paying jobs they're stable. And and working on some pretty important projects to. In the reportable there's affordable housing available in that region yes not like yeah Boston. It's not like New York City. You can buy a home and nice home in either of those areas where you talk about quonset point Rhode Island word Groton Connecticut yep you buy and I told for 200000 dollars yep media right condominium for 120000. Yeah meet median price in Rhode Island this is out when he fourteen was 2151000. Dollars and if you look at some of the more urban areas there if you look at Providence median price of homes that are currently listed in Providence 179900. Yeah that's affordable he Iran in Iraq are already seemingly. Cheating on the OPEC deal. That's part of the reason we've seen oil pull back a little bit I've got to oil trading at 5207. I don't know that there's a lot to be surprised about your truck. No I mean this is even once the deal was done I kinda set up close view we'll see if they actually follow through and well here we are in oil's near artists starting to pull back a little bit after us and fears of oversupply largely due. To concerns about that deal with OPEC you know as you as you mentioned. Both Iran and as well as Iraq potentially. Iraq came out today and said look they're going to raise crude exports from its main port. In February so you've got countries that you know sign this pact that are pretty much now saying well we signed it but we're just gonna do we want and. Love that good news for use single ladies and gentlemen Brad Pitt is available for dating is his Angelina Jolie they have finalized their divorce packed I'm not sure. Exactly why we're covering the story but it it it broke last night I got it off the CNBC. That divorce is final. I mean you got to figure this is a divorce is probably gonna settle hundreds of millions dollars. You know the so this can't be easy to address but yet they're both. They're both available again how do we know Brad Pitt is the spoils gotta post it in the right yeah he's over fifty is he really. Tucker would know that how does Brad Pitt makes me feel old. Stem. It's always 53 fatal or result while. Does that make you feel old it's looks like he's like thirty still you expert and I do Heath. That's saying something I like Brett that a look at the god ever watch it your folks ever watch QVC he gives him a note QVC is oh we are MMI just started out. I don't want to but I I know it is whether they're they're down. I I this part I didn't understand. They say that 87%. Of its US customers are women OK I get that. 80% are homeowners. And the average age ranges between 35 and 64 I mean that's a pretty big range to have your African. Right it's it's like yeah the average aged between eighteen and ninety well OK you know what does that really do for us. Yeah I mean not not surprising that you've seen their sales slip a little bit as people of continued to move. Away from traditional media also do think that in all the election coverage probably hurt them a little bit people probably not turning over home shopping channels much probably watch more of the news networks over the course of the fall. But this company. That I wonder what they do eventually to reinvent themselves because you know they built of very strong business on the back of the growth in cable TV. From the eighty's and ninety's and into the early two thousands. But the question is where do you go into day where you don't need to sit around and wait for someone to give you a ten minute infomercial he can just go on Amazon and buy whatever you want. We talked to Steve the flip Oprah mud dot deals yeah didn't he say he sold a lot of product on QVC. Think so he's doing a lot of his pasta the spring rolls I think. Something via you know it that it it's that it's a boon for retailers if you have the right product oh yeah that you have to have the right niche product. But I know guys that'd be it there been instances where people close their retail operations and just sold exclusively on QVC. I just wonder how badly they're being impacted by. Things like Amazon.com. And jet dot com because you might see something on QVC. Right and it's 1999 that you check it on Amazon you find out you can get over eighteen. What's interesting is this is still the first quarterly decline in revenue. Since 2009 during the recession so even with the growth of Amazon the online retailers. This its delegates have been happening every quarter so I will be curious to see. If we start to see new trend here where they're declining quarter after quarter after quarter morph this might just be a blip is due to. You know something it just because the election or something like that it could be you know I'm I'm curious to see a little bit more data coming in the next couple quarters. We're talking about overhauling the corporate tax structure in the United States and the life of me I find it very complicated fighter current tax code very complicated in the new one. Lady and be more so we're joined by new forward for the New York Times he's gonna help us better understand. What are current tax code is and perhaps what it's gonna look like going forward ideal hurry. At. Two and read the second paragraph of your January 7 article that we can talk about it you know mind. The current corporate income tax manages the weird trick. Of both taxing companies at a higher statutory rape and other various countries while collecting less money as a percentage of the overall economy that most of them. It is infinitely complicated. And it gives companies incentives. To borrowed too much money and move operations. To countries with. Lower tax rates. This is one of the major. Campaign components for Donald Trump and part of the reason that he won the election. Help us understand how we got to such a complicated tax code. Well that the central idea of the US corporate income tax is to tax in context profit. And at a creek. A kind of process where. If you can change what means what what definition and commit to continue to expert. Add to that it's been a long time since there's been a major kind of roll back of overly complicated elements tax code 1986 was the map last major. Overhaul the tax code. So it works is kind of like underbrush in a forest. You all the carve out deductions and special treatment of this or that always keep it. It injected into the tax code and it's been you know going out thirty years since there's been. And aperture really proven that the text code for for businesses and really get rid of some of the underbrush so resulted you have the system where that that the story. It's a very high corporate income tax rate 35%. But then you have all these different part about reduction to add complexity and actually mean it actually doesn't collect all that much money he'd been given how high the greatest. When it depends what industry you're read it correctly company like Wal-Mart gees lot of tax. Where is a company they can transfer their intellectual property to Ireland or some foreign country they pay a negligible. Tax. Right that's one of the patterns of the last decade or so is companies getting very creative. Very aggressive in using entered differential between what that would tech trader at different countries defined very clever ways produced or overall experts. So. And essentially have their property owned by that subsidiary. And that it it could see that and come sit in the US subsidiary pays money to two gain access to intellectual property Ireland. Repeat of very low income tax rate and that kind of shift and come out of that seat in Ireland where that low rate also read about core protection version which is. Actually do the merger to result in the corporate headquarters of the an American company being overseas somewhere with a lower rate it it it. It's a seat belt helps companies avoid paying US taxes but not really changing anything fundamental about the. Well in and these are all things that Donald Trump is determined to do away with the correct he he wants take. To get rid of these incentives to play these games. Yeah although I would add it up there you know trumpet its help has not been very specific about what you sort corporate taxes. Most of what I read the article the plan that helped Republican excuse last year as part of a blueprint of how to restructure the tax code. But yes struck consultant also. Talked about how old pal bad you just text corporate tax code is to try to restructure its but as with all these things doubled in detail how you actually do that hasn't beat cops. Okay now Twitter refers to it as DB CFT. The destination based cash flow tax would border adjustment. Maybe you'd be good enough to explain what that means. Well they had done the current corporate income taxes based on. Income so. You know you know you calculate isn't it profits for company and they pay tax on that. Which again gives all the incentives to to shift. Two different petitions profits overseas. To create the structures that that you know the Baltic not a extra debt to two. It's capitalized. Investment spending. This to the idea of of the cash flow attack is to tax based on where that money's actually come again and so to speak and cash flow rather than in com. That's important distinction because for example to make investments and in new equipment to factories and income tax system. You cap like that over many years you depreciated over many years an actual attack well piece that the money on new equipment you deducted that you receive Mike Evans and two to deduct more. But and to invest more is it decrypt a lot of things that the essence complexity typically doesn't status to clearly shell game to collect property with corporate versions. And potentially concurred greater best. What is the downside of. Well I don't site for one thing is not really tested the idea that intellectually and conceptually looks looks really interest in. But it decreased to really beat distortions of economy could. Create a situation where for example low margin retailers say unity and a bit of relying on imports. It is a much higher tax burden where exporters face actual text responds. I'm at any time there's any time there's disruption at increased risk of winners and losers that could really have unpredictable backs throughout that the global com mean throughout US. Richard as Neil thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. I knew Irwin New York Times and you know chuck the the the biggest disincentive for their biggest knock on that plan is what it might do you from what I've heard is what might do to import prices. Well it is and and you figure especially let's say that you're someone. Who is making essentially the median income in the united state the families of may be making around 55 to 6000 OK yellow make it sixty to make the map these. And all of a sudden you have the cost of items that used by. Going up by 56789%. Because of that border adjustment taxed you know that that makes a big difference there. In what you're able to buy in the problem is that yet might incentivized. US companies to try to produce at those new prices that you may find more people with jobs but you're still paying higher prices for goods that. And that's the problem is yeah you might end up creating a couple jobs here but you're going to be paying higher prices for goods and you're also assuming. That no one else is going to do this as retribution team. You know what if all of a sudden other countries start saying okay we're gonna start taxing your imports with me at 101520%. As well. Rate and that's the general Lee. That's where terror wars have. Cause a lot of problems store they do and and you look at the latter half of the twentieth century and it's been aged it's been almost a straight line move towards deeper integration and it's obviously been painful for a lot of folks that have been hurt by globalization. And you know we understand why you're you in this situation now. But tariffs are necessarily. The fix for all this that's the thing you have to remember it's a complicated issue that didn't get this way overnight. You're not going to be able to put everything back together the way it was. In 123 or four years. It's time for trivia and weekly trivia every day here on the financial exchange. What is the name of the remote found. That sits at the bottom of the green canyon were doing trivia today based on the Grand Canyon because it was 109 years ago this week. If you can't do that don't. Look put those mules back to work they wanna work right. You're so anti progress on this pro mule. They the air he would be investing in a restaurant booking app called Reza now. I use Opentable. It's pretty good with is that different why would this beat better. Ritz ER ES why why would Rosie be any better or different from Opentable. So Reggie what it supposedly does is it incorporates feedback from the user. In two A recommended list for restaurants to try to cure it restaurants that might be appealing. To the users as they try to claim. That maybe they're able to get a higher rate of booking because of that. I don't know if it's true I've never seen a restaurant that used reds he that I know of maybe some do and I just haven't been aware of it. But Opentable seems to be somewhat ubiquitous at this point and Opentable obviously was acquired. When when they bought it was a couple of years ago I think maybe 2013. That Opentable was acquired. Opentable part of Priceline at this point. Of that yet they were bought back in nuts when he fourteen actually June 13 so almost three years ago now. They were bought out by Priceline. But they served 37000. Restaurants right now compared to Rosie which has only about a thousand. Jones Opentable I used it Tonya. So rightly it I like it's. If they would like I do find though. That it's tough to get a reservation they eat you in order to use it effectively duels almost half the plan. Especially on a Friday or Saturday night you have to make that reservation on Tuesday. Lot of times yet you it's it's very difficult to do anything same day and heard a lot of places you know you may even have to go a couple weeks out to lie to try to get something done there. But Opentable I mean I've been using probably for three or four years now. And yet you get if you book enough reservations this and yet checks of the you can you know take a little money off the next meal but. I use it all the time to book anything I I very rarely call restaurants to book something now. Unless there's don't have Opentable which some still do because Opentable does take a fee for any booking. What do they charged in. The last time I checked I think it was a dollar fifty ahead. Or something in that ballpark and they also charge wanna say it's a 150 maybe 250 dollar monthly fee for the platform. And if you've ever seen any of those sometimes they say like the thousand point tables that you get a bonus yup those restaurants pay Opentable more. In order to get those so it's almost like advertising in order to get people and I think those are like 45 dollars per head in order to get one of those ball. I I think they have a pretty good service by irate attitude is that I think they do an extra hey don't forget call Cushing and dole and and get their guide for the month of January it's called nursing home planning for the procrastinate or it's a free guide available exclusively from Cushing handle and call 8668485699. That's all 38668485699. The name of the guy. Nursing home planning for the procrastinators. To never too late. 8668485699. So truck when you ride on an escalator. Are you one of those guys that just sits there on the right hand side holding handrail or you walk and on the left side trying to pass everybody. I take that there's a teller you stay fit and stay you keep myself active I take the stairs I don't believe in escalators. Well if I were ride escalators that he is I wanna be faster. But I am one of the guys that were walks on the left which is the only if you're in it it is an airport. And senior at Logan ever any big airport with they have those long conveyor belts Jeff. You stand on the right yup and you walk on the left. I guess that's cause and big problem though with these conveyor belts in the escalators it's damaging. Yeah apparently what happens is it wears out the right side of the escalator more rapidly because of all the additional weight on it for people standing around instead of just walking. And so it actually. Can supposedly be dangerous because the escalator can break down things he caught in a more easily than. No no I mean I I guess I'd buy it it's just like what what's the solution. I don't know the XTV they're trying to change this world wide they'll be executed there's been a lot of accidents in China in particular we were they have so many people. It could try to be changed behaviors lead Milwaukee to sit there in years you'd try to stay safe plus with an aging population it's probably become a problem. What do you do it in older. What does he do it kinda like how they did with the gas lines back in the day where it's look on Monday you walk left and right on Tuesday you walk right stand left no. Now I don't think that network and I don't think we could I think our societies far too. Stagnant. Imagine the fights that would cause. Just thought after people getting bowled over. Pete what do you make of new balance they have local New England company they're coming into the fit tech business with a 300 dollars Smart watch. Their late. And these things have not been big sellers and their price point is very high and I like new belts are low I'd like to see them do well. But I'm not sure they've got a product it's gonna sell here. Yeah I'm I'm in the same boat as you why I like new balance accompany their local business you know they make all their shoes in the US. But I just don't know if there is a market for a 300 dollar Smart watch this point and it it's. It's just a tough sell I think for a lot of people to spend that much on something that doesn't do a whole lot more. The new phone already does your phone book you know it. That's not on you. But they make our bands for your running that you can you know we can do what I do and I'd just be a slide mine in two while you know might my shirt and all of us and it doesn't fall out its you don't have to do a whole lot. To to turn your phone into something pretty close to a Smart watch yeah I just. I've always been a little skeptical of where bulls just because I don't understand. The attraction unless it can truly replace your phone if you don't need to have your phone tethered to. Okay now you've got something but this I just don't quite get. And I just wonder how much inventory new balance is buying because it is something that Elmo little concerned about that they might end up kind of taken aback. Dobbs what is this thing yet the Bluetooth feature is that an attractive option. Yes I just don't really know like what what does it do that unique. You know it's a wires right here you know a lot of times you'll see somebody running and or Jim Wright they've got headphones on but they're wired. Yeah I mean I guess if you want wireless headphones but you don't want wireless headphones. You know you want I know that you would talker want the wires on the little curious about wireless but you know talker like to have something attached to your head I get that. I'm just worried about losing. The near expensively than lose those apple airboats. The bloody thing or 180 bucks you lose one of them is what seventy dollars a victory was that it's yeah it's crazy expensive yeah so why I don't on I'm just I'm still not sold on the you know Smart watches in general no Apple's had some six apple sold millions of home. But no one else has really been able to move long we've talked at length about the problems that fit that is had. Trying to compete in that space and fit that is far more established as a lot more knowledge on the new balance does. This point yeah they sure do. Keep it down oh it's scratching up eighteen to 20000 Dow is up fifty points right now at 191938. The NASDAQ up twenty points in crude oil trading down again today down 1%. At 5233. Has spent the last week at the Consumer Electronics Show and he's gonna give us a read you some of the great technology that was introduced there. I I had power you. I'm doing pretty well are you guys don't. Good good so. Whitworth the EU the Big Three if you will in terms of technology introductions that you saw at the scene you know. If we're talking Big Three the number one thing that they're as it was last year is actually Amazon web integration that is one of the things that. And the under the you have a present at Fiat but they don't have a good boost earnings and but only different companies have announced elect integration there's like. Robot that exist that actually allow you to talk to Alexa there's late this property will be able to talk you and elect. Echo speaker and maybe they change the channel and that's kind of a crazy thing to think about a good and not run even there. Number two. But they've got to be LG LG kind of went sport this year into decent crazy things including an incredibly thin. Television at about 2.5 seven millimeters and the call it the W series they'll be sent for wallpaper it's and he really kind of not guilty to do is robot. A lot of like a robot one which had Alexa. And another that you could actually be an airport the ballet for airports in particular so they kind of really went orders while the number three by the extent been. Probably. In the ER I mean DR wasn't as great as it was last year. But that we saw a lot of different takes as two different out of glass is different kinds. Hardware lots of different kind of implications but that's still not really up there. I as a question that I have worry every year there's always you know we we we talk about these major themes and go back if through some of the last years that we've gone through CES and be back using the 2013 or 2014. Was 3-D TV how is gonna be the next big thing. A year later it was wearable technology. Don't you know a couple of these they they just don't seem to pan out necessarily. Are these I guess the key things that using this year they seem more realistic and more. Kind of keen to the demands of consumers or we gonna get something else like that. That that's kind of cool is watched TV and 3-D but it's not practical no one's in and buying it any points. Yes pretty TV was really really a big push by the TV companies to get to upgrade it when you change your cycle from ten years of first communion TV collect three years. And that's just not happening because they're not and usually the forty TV and that's right and everything a lot of people that they'll do the job. Become you elect integration if this idea of talking to your home. That's going to be a real a real thing that people have to deal with because a company like LG. They claimed that it that there are quite as going forward. All have Wi-Fi and more more devices are getting smarter light bulbs are smarter ovens are smarter radios are smarter everything you can think. Is getting smarter and you're going to need it really easy way to control that. But you can have app synapse snap snap of well a lot of people remote controls. But we're finding out right now than ever done. They are really trying to killing it when it comes to you. Getting other companies on board because that competition out there that might not score Connor didn't go home. And it even happy apples theory happy apple create edit and it. Not exactly anywhere near the level of Alexia. So so here's a question piggybacking on that. The the attack. Maybe three or four months ago that took down Twitter and some other website having CNBC was down for a little bit but there was supposedly initiated from a lot of these Smart home under devices that were unprotected. Is there anything at CES that was focused on securing these devices. Yes so what I mean is that with Google in particular we're talking about there API and the ability that they would share with. Other computer trying to make Smartphone devices. And when it comes to Google. They're very very secure so what they wanna do is get more copies on board with their platform that we Google called to control all the other devices. So I believe Amazon dot that are very secure thing going to depend on really I think controlling it if you just talking about Smart white ball. Maybe a company that make that into the public's help isn't as security. But it wasn't a lot of talk as you API not kind of stuck collect more developer friendly and it showed what about consumers Baku did make mention at one point about. Trying to get the other companies on board with its platform to secure that kind of thing. Anyone doing anything new as far as where bulls I mean obviously the last couple years we've heard that was the next frontier. But what you're talking about Smart watch sales ticket sales are down it doesn't seem like there's been a ton of progress there is there anything even incremental that's kind of getting better there. You know I live through it because they paid no good thing it would it would wearable guitar issued a decline in its present at ES this year. And we get a couple of other new devices that we've missed it's got that. A new touch screen fitness revised its. They were bought up by awful but not exactly anything revolutionary. I would run last year to the huge push for android where 2.0 which is. Google's version of their operating system for the watch. The because Google actually pulled back as cute really good to later this year. No company really had android where 2.0 devices so we can on one incremental thing I just realized. And son did announce that its Q are they actually let them it's watches. Well actually work with apple IOS but the software upgrade I'll bet woke kinda go after people who have apple devices but hey. Can't and that have a pretty cool watch and maybe go with them. Anything you mentioned in in TV's obviously four K is one of the big things that TV manufacturers have been pushing recently. Is the new well gee is that using. Was it OLED technology to get that then. Yet to be the LG wc TV to the B seventeen excuse me. I aid is an old led screen and for those who don't know oh lead is that in organic light emitting coyote. That would really cool about it is it never need a backlight. That's what can be so bad and so what happens is when I like to dump up it can also turn off each and every individual pixels they get a true pure black. They've which gives you what kind of contrast yup not partially the technology how to make a bad. Looking at that technology and no one of the criticisms recently has been that it's costly just is that the production yields have been so low are the cost starting to come down to the point where it's. I won't say affordable but at least reasonable for consumers. Expect more formal and has been in the past I'll do you one of the leading manufacturers and now we're the only manufacturers of solar panels there actually producing reality kind of assert the panels for Sony Sony also introduced a new item over TV. That Helio talk Laviolette that the Central Park the LG Debbie seven. The Samsung has nothing to do with the excuse me because I had this desolate them. LG's W series is 8000 dollars or 65 inch version does actually used the high end. Of this because incredibly then it's way way underrated edge of technology. You can probably get something much more horrible than you would think in the old days. Very good I as thank you very much for joining us today. But thank you so much I has act or from CNET talking about the Consumer Electronics Show in review. You know the problem with all this home automation technologies you don't know which one to battle. You know late which one do you go with the Alexa he'd go with the global product did Microsoft having. He didn't end it once you've died in your kind of committed to that platform yet it's kind of tough to pick his name. It's you know you don't wanna go too soon just because you don't know you know someone's gonna alms and just cancel their platform and you're kind of on that drive. Right you've spent 500 bucks or whatever it is too young to by the Virgil. Platform he welcome back to chuck is ought to he's back in studio on a daily basis. We appreciate your participation in the show we could hit 20000 today. Let you know when we come back to more. Have a great day everybody very chuck and Tucker from our insurer match dot com studio.
