This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks are enough. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chunks. It's somewhat unusual. To get wind of a big merger. On a Friday it just it's usually especially on a long week you have a long weekend coming up. And it won't surprise me at all if we get use of the big merger on Tuesday the on a Friday. It's not a bad thing but it is unusual we've got news John good morning everybody its truck and bury. Got news on this craft and Unilever merger. And this is a very large and the need to. It is as the potential if it ends of going through and I still have. I have some doubts as to whether or not this deal you do go through I do. You know it in I'll tell you what this is a company that combines. It would be an absolutely massive farm when it's all said and done. But I've some questions first of all just about the synergies between these companies is. Bothers some. I don't know if it necessarily makes some sense from that perspective but also. You know keep in mind that both of these companies. Are very well known in the private equity space and specifically with Kraft pines three G in Warren Buffett. Our let's talk about the two company's Kraft Tynes right. Yup food company dominates North America right and then Unilever European company yet. And in you know lever does have a food business they're more well known on their personal care products side of things. Soaps shampoos those types of things is is where I think most people probably know them from. In this deal effectively. Would end up being somewhere in the ballpark. Of 8200 billion dollar company when it's all said and done you have two companies both worth more. Then a hundred billion dollars year. That would be coming together it's a big merger to complicated merger. But this savings that you potentially get from the economies of scale could be significant if they can come to an agreement here. Will you say your skeptical of the deal but Unilever stock is up by almost 10% and crafts Heinz stock is up by seven and a half percent so clearly. The stock market is saying hey chuck we disagree with we think this deal happening. Yes stock market is saying that they think there's a better chance of this deal happening here. I'd I'd I just wonder about this if it's too complicated and too big to pull off with everyone being able to get on board with that. I just I don't know if if feisty being able to come to fruition I could be wrong but given my ma. It impact the consumer the let's say you're not a stock investor that you're just a customer and you buyer razor blades and you bi catch up beat you by macaroni and cheese and is it meet your prices go up. In the whip with something like this if they're able to realize the fish and sees that they think they can't know your prices should be. Pretty much in line with where they are today and I don't see a ton of movement there just because the thing is in the food space there so we substitute. You know it's not something where you're not talking about utility where. There's no substance yet talk about Telecom where there's no substantive best and the foods based look at Heinz Ketchup goes up from price you buy the generic brand for half the cost you know there's like there's there's things you can do. In the food space there so I don't think it's gonna have a huge effect on. Consumer costs there yeah thing to remember. Is that in the the United States right now you were seeing a big push away. From the mainstream consumer brands by a lot of folks and it it's something that every brand is struggling with right now because a lot of consumers in particular being pushed. Is much they give him a ton of crap. Hipster colonials are on the front lines of this trying to move away from bigger brands in towards more locally sourced products higher quality products in a wave from the types of things that these companies make to begin with. That's something to remember too depending on either of these companies need to get any debt to complete this deal. I would think so no thanks I know you mentioned three G we should talk about who they are Warren buff involved of course three G capital. They call it a Brazilian hedge fund but in fact their headquarters ordered the bulk of their people agency's headquarters New York. Actually Greenwich Connecticut yeah is is where there they're they're doing their research so I I. I don't know if it happens or not but it sure the stock market's telling me. That this deal happens it's a big deal what does it and you know what those stocks are owned in virtually every index fund pretty you know yeah. Every you know a lot of mutual funds on the stocks though. That's gonna be you know it's gonna repel those values higher to. Yeah I and I tell you if there's anyone who can pull this deal off and those guys get the maximum efficiency out of it. The three G guys are as good as again that they are not ruling though they're not easy to work for now tell you that. But bay they run. Tight ships and they get the absolute most out of their companies. The 71 billion dollar US food stamp program based intense scrutiny on Thursday as members of congress. Debated. Whether to prevent consumers. From spending allowances. On sugary soda. Hannity and other items deemed unhealthy. Well I gotta tell you I've read this story and it then occurred back occurred to me. Why would you be allowed. To. You know use your food stamps for these types of purchases in the first thing they they go on to say you know the story was understated. Knew he can't use the food stamps for hot meals tobacco and alcohol. But about 20% to about 20% of food stamp dollars. Are spent on sweetened beverages desserts. Salty snacks can't be in sugar sounds like all the items in my shopping cart. So what's the problem. Well the the congress is saying they should not be allowed to do that people that are rich foods it stamp recipients should not be allowed to others I food. He then I don't have a problem well here here's my problem in and I do have a problem I I think if your. Using food stamps at taxpayer money that's money that comes out of your paycheck every week. To help subsidize this for remember this is not a small program this is a 71 billion dollar expense to American taxpayers each year. And I think here's upwards of forty million people that are on food stamps now. And yeah I have a problem with people buying. Coke or Pepsi would like boot it. Because it's not nursing and it's meant to help people that are. It like it if you had a and we used the food stamps to buy milk in used to buy chicken and and and food did feed your family had no problem that but I don't think he should be using it to buys. You don't need soda in your life there's no. You are even milk in your life like that you don't need it like you can go and eat anything you don't want you to buy chicken you can be vegetarian if you want we preclude people from buying meat. No no on eight I don't think I have no problem with something that's healthy item but you don't eat chocolate you guys. You need you need nourishing food in your diet you you think they should be allowed to buy anything they want this the the money's spent what what does it matter where it goes to. Well the the idea is are are you feel like if if they spend it on if they spend twenty dollars on potato chips yes. Which I do you give them another twenty now that's what they spent it on its don't like it's over. Like if if it was a case where hey we spent way up dip chips now we get to get something else too and have a problem with. It that the money spent on it doesn't matter where it goes at that. From while it is our poll question today do you agree with truck that he should be able the use food stamps to buy I would everyone jumped the you can vote that way you that would be of yes vote on are. By mutual exchange website or you can vote with me I voted no I think if your own food stamps in my opinion. You should be precluded from buying certain items and I'll use soda like Coca-Cola and chocolate bars as prime examples I don't think should be allowed to buy either of those items. With food stamps. And it comes up be the big opponents. Of food stamp will it would recall food stamps election right near her limitations restrictions restrictions yeah. The the big opponent so they are of course companies like Wal-Mart and for our does that make a lot of money. Well here here's the thing of if I'm sitting here looking at this from the perspective. Of in general to the role of government as we talk about it. Is to supposedly allow people to make their own choices but make the best was possible why are we telling people what to bond. You're RE's use it easy to try to keep them healthy and and help them make the best choices while I don't think someone if you are those things off the like this is something that we get into so is it okay then. Should we start taxing sugar shall we start taxing fat like those types of things that we should be doing you know I have no problem that. But it I just I don't understand why you want to ban someone from being able to buy I want to just make them pay more because their government assistance that that's the whole night but he but the money's spent. It's already out there. But wouldn't it be better to have these families that are on me you know I'm not trying machine people that are on food stamps. It's the end there's a lot of people that are wrong on the program that are yet they have physical health problems here there are unemployed. They're disabled. And not trying to shame but my gosh let's at least have them. Shopping in healthy fashion not so pretty much the argument is that if you're on food stamps you lost the ability to buy chips. Well what I just would buy money. You can buy with your eggs don't agree with that. That's okay. It's apparently gets you pretty much saying that if you are poor you lose the right to make your decisions yes. He's you know he doesn't lose because you put it could happen to me what do what do all of a sudden have to go on food stamps what to go on food stamps you can get chips I'd I see that would you audio battled with Q I drove it. That alone would keep me off of food so what if it was because of something out of your control. That they don't get what it's disability what they it. Again I don't I understand that people can abuse these programs I'm not saying that they can't they can't trying to micromanage them. Whenever we try to micromanage what people do we get ourselves in Detroit. Well get ourselves into trouble when we may just have to agree to disagree on this one. The next story has to do with AP classes now. AP courses that OPEC. And did Dartmouth accept them. They did yeah they they accepted them and except the credit for the as well so I actually finished. That whole scenario is changing a lot of colleges and universities are no longer accepting AP classes including by the way truck Dartmouth. Torre talk about that with Melissa Korn from the Wall Street Journal next. And AP courses are next on our agenda. From our insurer match dot com studios. I arrange a step on the financial exchange radio network. Hi everybody very Armstrong here from the financial exchange and I'm joined by Jake tool who's a senior vice president and leader bank. And leader bank has an exclusive. Program for those of you who are landlords here Cora collecting rent from one tenant for a 101 tenants. He rant might be something that you wanna look into Jake talked to us about zero at how long has it been around. We've been offerings he ran for almost two years now two years and his have been successful spent extremely successful we've. Offered this product to really target hardly in the hours were still collecting checks in paper form in this image. And the purpose of zero needs to really bring everything online meet electronic but more importantly. Have a piece edit and forget it so what's Elaine more hazard tenants that up. I'm really there's nothing that needs to be done until the leases over. The rent is automatically drafted from the Tenet's account can you choose the date of the month is it always the first of the month there could be there let's say he signed attendant on the fifteenth to to be the fifteenth of every month yup absolutely so landlords that's the initial date. Whatever day of the month that is. It will be the same date every month penalty collected how much does it cost the landlord to set this all so it's absolutely free if the landlord banks with OK so if you're a landlord you have your bank account leader bank you get this is you rent service for when you get for free. That's you have a bank account elsewhere will still provide a service for small monthly charge and if you ever decide to move your bank relationship over waive the fees that. Pretty pretty simple it's pretty cheap and it's a great product our landlord perhaps only club. Lot of our it's called zero rent and the website for it is WWW does he rent dot net. Or you can call leader bank an 8776917900. To learn more 8776917900. Collect your rent electronically makes an awful lot of sense to me the phone number again 8776917900. Or visit. You rent dot net. Many of us took AP classes when we're high school and then when we went to college those classes transferred to our schools and reduce the number of credits we needed to take in order to graduate. Sounds like that whole scenario is changing we're joined by Melissa Korn from the Wall Street Journal I'm Melissa are you. We're glad to looks like Kiger article I guess a couple days ago. Our State's schools lake. And UNH or you are I are they required. To accept AP classes if I went to an in school Indian state high school. Still it honesty there are. When you're 21 states now that you can't see why old rules and policy on. Requiring. Public institutions public universities should credit. Or High Court on three year yeah but they opt in elective what was I exactly how they how the lord and or act of our graduation Iron Man like and app. I love of my attack. But it there at the movement. They have a public secret we I you. Expand act and let it count for much credit. What did you seen me in your article you mentioned that a lot of private universities. Are rejecting them out. Right now happy news. Has on but the public school at any public entity is. We're credit and I and the very old school. To thank you T agree apple. And number 88 or number of IE. The court and Gordon and I art. I need secret. Synthetic saying. Yeah right you get the cast until a higher pop. We're actually should he can't actor Alex. Would somebody at a not. That's not. There are a college. At. Wit there how many students take AP classes every year. You know. The last year and a half million truck after they. Almost you know. Acting up at a ski. Now Dartmouth. Stop taking them all together did they get a lot of heat over that issue in the when they said hey we're not accepting AP classes. Out of the student body respond. The date that a lot of heat for it. Could you know hired IA major that I signed up front they keep it cool and how Allah. Count. AT carpet are marketed as being in. Pretty much college equivalents and broke her courage to say I'm sure there aren't some schools are. Expected to come out. Let me add. Play devil's advocate here Melissa is is it possible. That the colleges are doing this to make more money. You know because if I don't take those life if I transfer in five courses. I could graduate half a semester or half a year earlier not have to pay tuition. It possible that people are doing NASCAR I actually gotten a lot out of circulation other ear. It will break your group are out of one of the early hurting somebody. And JK thank you don't want it and made comment with a credit they aren't accurate. They ordered extra half hour. Exploring more elective. The students should go to those schools for the most part aren't the ones I rushed how much. Mocha. Or Melissa thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. Melissa Korb Wall Street Journal trucked in retrospect. Right you graduated. Many years ago we took AP classes yup I took AP classes in Canada and they trip ice I was able to. I think five of my classes transferred into a university. In retrospect though. Where your classes in high school as hard or were they the equivalent of what the deal with with they waved for you had her. No it and I can tell you and I have some empirical evidence to back this up. The APB's he calculus I exam is the toughest math exam that you'll take in the EP program through high school I ended up with a perfect score. I then went and got a seat plus on the calculus course at placed into college no kidding yeah it was just if I was not able to do the work that was required there. Well he's a bad teachers just because a war in the material that was talked to me in the course but he didn't prepare me to take the next. Of the hole that's a big difference yeah. That's huge and it in like you would dramatically the first exam that I had in that course in college yet was largely reviews I remember like in 91 or 921. By the second course out downed like seven be the final that exam there were five questions and I'll answer to hole. Yeah it was just like I would just completely just crossed off. And Bedard had no idea is that dramatic. The world is a wash in gasoline. But here's a statistic that really shocked me and I think it will shock you. Gasoline consumption. Plummeted in January of 2017. Matching a fifteen. Year low and now. The reason I'm shocked by this is chuck and I. Fall auto sales and we report on autos and every time we've been reporting for the last couple years track we report that trucks or sell like crazy. Suvs are selling electric crazy and least fuel efficient vehicles the last two years he can't give these aren't things away nobody wants to buy. Toyota Corolla nobody wants to buy a Honda Civic everybody behind the big gas guzzlers in yet. Gasoline consumption down four point 4% year over year. Or am in my field like shocked by that. No and the other thing it's a little interesting is that if you looked at much of the country aside from California which had some weather problems you know. You didn't have big weather problems in the northeast or anything like that so little to what do we tree fuel efficiency didn't gain. Miles driven last year were up would we save miles driven or six 3.5 percent yeah so you know I don't know what necessarily. Contributed to this fall in gasoline demand in January 30 of one month aberration policy it could be I mean it's something like that could absolutely be happening just based on what we're holiday is replaced and things like that if you look. At where new years ended up falling this year near this to be something that ends of falling into what is New Year's fell on a Sunday what does that mean. You get an extra Monday off so maybe peoples are driving in that contributes to a I don't know if that plays into it necessarily instead of just that standard day off you know. I don't know but something food you like that necessarily I don't know what it is to get a look at the February march data yeah I get get another couple months then you can see if it's something that actually. He's a new trend will come back we'll have trivia for you brush up on your knowledge of NASCAR because that's our trivia topic from our insurer match dot com studios. First listener with the correct answer wins 825 dollar gas card. In which year did the first Daytona 500 race Okur. Again the text number 68060. We talked about gasoline. The country is a wash in gasoline. And as much as we have an oversupply of gasoline we also have an oversupply. Of crude oil. I thought on this new struck crude would be trading down a lot it's not. No only doubt and a little bit today down about a quarter of percent. And I think the big reason for that is we continue to see some more cooperation from OPEC on those putts that they had announced. A couple months back so. I think that you know what you're seeing here is kind of the balance between those and oil continues to hover right now at 53 year range on the west Texas intermediate right around 55. 56 for the Britain. I read this story about US household debt actually caught this headline yesterday and said oh boy here we go again debt levels for. Americans. Approaching the same that they were back in 2008. That's not the whole story whose. No it's not even though you did he household debt climbed by the most in a decade. The old tried I think we have to acknowledge it household that is why it is high but it's nowhere near what we saw back in the lead up to the financial crisis to give me some numbers these are coming from the New York fed. Household borrowing today is about 67%. Of GDP yeah okay. Back in 2008. It got up 85%. Of the dollar. Is the same. Dollar amount is the same and is in fact go and surpass what we were then. But as a percentage of the overall economy it's a smaller piece just because the economy has grown since. Net debt is a little different now one of the things that I noticed lose. In 2000 neat. College that was only about half a billion dollar 500 billion dollars yeah now it's one point three trillion how'd that happen at such a short period of time that does that seem. I'm usual to seek college debt increased that much in eight years and years it does but remember how many people went back to grad school. During the last seven or eight years or is it that much oh it was huge it is a massive spike in the number of people and that is to. He graduated in neater nine he says without this economy I remember talking to somebody wrote that owned an investment bank at large publicly traded investment bank. And he would have you know it's really good candidates. Come to him looking for work. That'd just graduated from our murdered department the good school normally he would hire this case ready to hire as bankers for two or three years you already said that looked. I don't have any work for nobody's gonna have any work for you go back to grad school and come back in two years may be QB maybe the banking businesses currently. Yeah in I'll tell you when you look at people who were going to grad school programs. In particular when you talk about lake doctorates and things like that those people tend on average carry additional debt. Okay. Just because there's programs are more expensive and often times you don't have parents they're paying for some people have to take out debt. Parents are paying for portion of those in a lot of cases so was it didn't we also talked though trucked in and a lot of the death. Faults that we've referenced are private there on for profit in it. The league so you're saying a lot of kids went back to get get their NBA they went to law school they went to med school. But it. How much of the money went to. I don't know ITT tech so for profit colleges. In general and this is just I'm reading from for profit you dot org it's a website and it's an organization that. Looks at the for profit colleges and kind of rates how well they do for profit colleges enroll between ten to 13% of college students they receive about 25%. Of the EU loans that are made out to students social about a quarter. Of the debt that's issued each year for student loans. Ghosts of those for profit colleges the rest is still going to your non profits. I cannot tell you secret. There's this resort that I go to it's called the buccaneer. And it is located in saint Croix in your price and where in the heck is saint Corey saint Croix. Is about forty or fifty miles south of Puerto Rico. So the way he get there right easy go to saint Croix either through Miami where he can go through Puerto Rico. We get to this island this incorporates is this Caribbean island that is just magical. And there's this resort it's a coral colored resort called the Buccaneers it's been around since 1947. Been owned by the same thing am. Since 1947. Into world famous people come to the buccaneer from all over the world one of the frequent guests of the Buccaneers bill Riley the way. And outside. This is a resort like none other in the world if you'd like to get away if your second New England weather if you. Looking out the window and Hannah. The two feet of snow on the ground he's wanna get away. Take my advice this is a trip that you really appreciate if you'd like to go to the buccaneer and give your phone number it's 80255. 3881. That's the number you would call to make reservation just mention my name in the giving it 250 dollar resort credit. 800 2553881. I promise you. If it is a resort unlike anything you've ever experienced listed in the buccaneer. Eight it in its its famous around the globe reservations at the buccaneer dot com if you wanna just jot them an email and it some pricing on a package. Or you McCall that's what I would do 802553881. You know the Darwin humor to the Darwin awards. Yet people who do dumb things and a kill themselves right I I think we. A Darwin award and it is up there this this is just one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. Mark Charles Baird of Ocala Florida Barnett Barnett now there are mark there we donated on an insult mark bear mark Charles Barnett. Of Ocala Florida he's 48 years they'll be at forty years old he tried to bomb a target. Don't know I just one target target stores multiple target stores any tried to do this because he thought it would cause the company's stock price to drop allowing him to bite the stock Eddie cheaper price. He's probably right and make a lot of money in the process if you set off bombs in ten targets rate it probably would cause the stock price to. Wouldn't eat here. Although I do love the irony of him picking a store called target to do the song it's like. What are you doing body it certainly was using an option during that no it's you just like. Oh it might drop some maybe he'll be able divide in the future it's like no you hedge first you don't do that in the end on the thing. What in lake. Well dart when I think I hope you like how many people like this are out there that gets into the Darwin award category. It just. In the past waiting to bomb target to drop the stock I would at least are just for fun would start Stockton could probably rally. Target is it's up it's up today almost one for any else's. Doubt it targets out good for you to pay. In the past we've talked to you about grab your wall. And grab your wallet is an organization. Headed by a woman who lives in San Francisco. And what she does is she encourages women around the country to boycott. Any story that sells trump products. Will yesterday. Suburban Wilmington. Ditched Nordstrom and go on cash waving Rampage to support the bucket trump I love story that I I think it's pretty funny. It it just shows like if you're running a corporation. Need to stay out of politics. Right it like that that's the one bit of advice I think in the so you know door system. I think was making a political statement when they said we're no longer gonna sell it pocket trump products. And these women have said fine. They walked in. In the canceled their cards right they they do it they walked into the stores to there you waving handfuls that passed around their canceling their cards and it's a great deal it is phenomenal video it and they're saying. Go to the words right to Dillard's is the big winner in this whole thing. Write it now Dillard's a Smart enough to just shut up right. Not talk about it one way or the other Nordstrom on the other hand oh by the way stock down four point 2% believe that its initial boost though after that. What north's reports now. All activated the the under after trump tracks from yes yes yes you're right but it was modest you lose a modest rally in the stock. I just think if you're running. You know there's the you know how all the CEOs have been going in and and it's going to see mr. from prison for a yeah well what happens is when you go in if you behave yourself then you're stock price goes up. But then shortly after in the weeks after that. Guys have been had they been shorting the stocks. After the after the visit and the stocks you should see I looked at JC Penney art kind of a bizarre world at this point you speak. So JC Penney yesterday. Rightly JC Penney BC EO goes in and they get a nice ballots from Donald Trump when he things don't change any of the planet this little boy about now. JC Penney's more than it's ever been this is like with Sears. Right after the election Everett and all we're gonna go Obama you lawnmowers that seniors know they did in the company's almost bankrupt and their avenue restructured to try to avoid bankruptcy. Pay objects will be joined by Larry Kudlow from CNBC or to talk to Larry about the border adjusted tax. And we'll have the answer to our trivia question from our insurer match dot com studios. That your and we pace after you passed away. Yeah you know certainly that's not a reason to do that you're darn right I'd like to say avoiding estate taxes maybe is the number one reason. And I think it's important for people realize that that with the state taxes federally being high. You can never forget about the state and the state estate taxes so yes there absolutely is and what you should do is. I'm assuming before you pass away. You know you should have these trusts in place in if you create these trusts whether their revote Kabul or irrevocable nature depending on your wish. We are still going to have buckets inside in just. Quickly the buckets that that are created when one dies are designed to actually reach it and shelter. Assets on the first and what is that C. A family let's just say you know you're you're dealing with a gross SP. 23 million dollars wooded minimal savings when you do that. That's 80255. 38 eight we're joined now by senior contributor to CNB CMR Larry Kudlow. And we're gonna talk to Larry about it brewing fight within the Republican Party. I Larry Dario. I. Oh good that. A way that talked you have been reading a vote the disagreements. Within the Republican Party as it relates to the border adjusted tax. There's a segment of the party that says hey we need to have a border just attacks in order to pay for the corporate tax cuts in the personal tax cuts. But then you've got guys like Chuck Grassley who's from Iowa saint well we do that who's gonna buyer farm products. So where do you weigh in how would you advise them. I'm opposed to I've written again. That quite a lot of it and he gets. Up but completely opposed to a one has to get the business tax form and the first reconciliation package rolls the ball. Lower the corporate rate. For large and small businesses. Down from forty. That it Friday repatriation of 10% immediate cash spent the new investment that's all I want. I don't want any taxes I don't want any tax hikes and no one day sales taxes I don't want any bad act is. I don't want to import the I don't care about actually about which would ever materialize that way and done this idea that the US dollar's gonna go right 5%. Is. It just theoretical not that I'm opposed to post and I regret those that 60% of those opposed to it I think at this point. It's dead in the war really. What what about how do you pay for the tax cut though the event. Yet Scott paper itself called growth and a good quote broke and repatriation. The debate itself. Or five years the paper. Priscilla tax cuts won't. That operate the capital gains will be helpful to remember they're gonna repeal. All the obamacare tax. That's pretty big number that at least hundred billion more. But no I don't care about the scorecards. I don't care about that exploring. And all that stuff is voodoo economics and not get by the way ironically it figured it. Let face slap. A buddy. That's what it was battered by the 5%. Tax on imports mean you know what's that gonna do. It demand for imports went consumer prices shoot up. And when we're down right away happen is that what imports. There are a lot. You don't get anybody. I'd bet the stupidity of this wanted to stupid. So. The point it leave that. 4% economic growth or war. Let's not angle it up at one last point. And give credit where credit is always do migrate pal Al rattle very distinguished long time pre market supply sider. Our show we already have. We already have. A quarter adjustable belt. Virtually every state the union has its aspects. Yup you know most of them do for an. At you know the averages they're right about five or 6% and always see. That fact Tate and revenues about 5% of GDP. And our state sales tax is prosperity our eyes take in about 4% of GDP so actually we're fairly close to Mexico. I'm back so now this is the best he got an idea at I appreciate it politically dead water. Why is the congress focusing on health care and repealing obamacare ahead of tax reform. Now well that's a very good question by the way. I. Not against that passed barely need to do both. You can split out the business tax reform from individual. Split out. And then put that it is the same reconciliation. Package that repeal Obama. You can do that the beauty of reconciliation. Is it can be whatever you want it to. And so I advised that I've written columns. As my pals use or right. Give it up front. The first reconciliation. Will be for FY said that he. Now have reconciliation. Instructions. Do away with the obamacare or you know how much of it they can do way I would I would just add a bit apps. But arriving to the longer you wait. That last economic activity that people will postpone and Kirk. So they know you know precisely bury what the rates aren't there rules yup. Asked about it it's going to be is it going to be retro look is it going to be effective when we we just don't know. Larry I heard that from investment bankers last weekend unity all the guys that have private companies. Are saying well we'll do it next year rates of the banker in their third there's no business activity. That's exactly it. What you wind that only years making 2070. Allows economic monitor. And by the way you'll see a stock market pull back because we anticipated profits while materialize. That you want Abbott who. Tax rate structure. Larry thank you thank you very much for your time appreciate. I'm glad to hear. Larry speak that way chuck because I'm hoping. That congressional leaders will pay attention to what he had just had to say. Yeah I mean again you you look at this discussion it's going on about this border adjustment tax and in the last couple weeks it seems like a lot of a lot of block congressional leaders have moved towards it even kind of the Paul Ryan is focusing it won't be as bad as some people are saying it will be. The fact is. Any time that you or adding additional taxes on trade you'd be trade more efficient and that typically ends up hurting more than anyone else is the consumer right the little guy. It's an in look this is not to say there's ways that you can try to reform trade deals and so forth but as I said yesterday. A border adjustment tax is a band aid doesn't get at the core of the problem is a band aid and not the long term solution. Markets are open and the Dow is down sixty points at 20558. I think it's a combination of both but but once you mention it if they don't mention that always think about after death well line and when you mention it. They jump on. One might spell out here here at lower divorce is so prevalent. Yes that's the pro and here's the worry right you guys you both you leave each of your children half a million dollars right. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're so leave your world. Stay info. In the end up today about an economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with Gary Armstrong and sharks done us. The stock market has been on its hair during the last three and a half months but today. It's taken a little bit of a breather. Get the Dow down about 55 points I everybody's very instructive. You know I keep waiting for the bottom of the fallout on oil but it doesn't the oil traded about 53 dollars a barrel to. Decked continues to chug along in that low to mid fifty dollar range gold today said there 1240 obviously that's Kamal a little in the last three to four weeks now. Ten year treasury little money flowing in their over the last couple days we've gone from about 2.5 percent down 2.4 two. Good news for those of you about to borrow money in it is not a big move but it will. Take a little bit of the curse off of mortgage rates right now get in the mortgage rates have in fact been gone apple. Yup so. You know overall it's this is a market that it's kind of read this whirlwind steady move up over the last couple months now after that spike right after the election. But the big thing is we continue to wait on some news coming out about any type of tax reform and things like that. And I think. You know it's most signs now or pointing that that's something that's probably about. Six months away now I and I I think that's a mistake and believe in me you know it's perhaps it's just my perspective but in my opinion. The first item to address would be tax reform it's the easiest. It's gonna have the greatest you get the biggest bang for your buck in terms of popularity up and then you tackle health care later eagle after health care. In the second round or third round what they're doing with health care. You know it we've got to the stories on it but it it it doesn't look. Dramatically different from what we've got now now. It's aids tweaking around the edges instead of instead of you getting loud we'll get into it later but I mean we were looking today we have an in our stack. To talk about what the Republican plan is for health care. And yet it's it is different I shouldn't say not it different there are some pretty substantial changes but it's. Not your top priority I I think the top priority for Americans. Get back to work and have some wage growth than be able to own a home and and get ahead have been able to do that for tenure. Look at you can earn more you can afraid to afford to pay more for healthcare you know it's really it's the EU can deal with that on the back and there's ways to do it. And it just it should be easier to get tax reform done in healthcare or healthcare reform the reason why almost never gets done it's so complicated tax reform never gets dunked his. There's some interest in there it's not that complicated to do we just have to distance yourself from those intra. Google boasts of a big. In sudden improvement in its plan to connect the world with Internet beaming balloons now this sounds a little bit scifi. But Mike actually kind of makes sense and and if they frankly. It may be the future of Internet distribution not just in emerging markets but globally you look at this technology check it makes sense to me. Yeah what the what they're talking about doing this is how would Google calls project the wound. And this comes from Google's Google X division which is there are moon shot development out the project. And pretty much what they are doing here is they have built these balloons that they were able to launch up into the air and they can actually steer them pretty well. You've done it successfully launched from Puerto Rico. And that balloon from Puerto Rico they they. Had it hovering over Peru. For three months at three months or so what they found is that with some improvements they've made they're able to guide these balloons more quickly than they initially anticipated and so. What you have here. Is potentially. A cheap and mobile's solution to getting Internet access to place eight right now don't have it could be as you mentioned. It could provide an additional competitor and areas that right now only are served by traditional wireline connection I was curious about the speed is trying to figure out what's speed Internet they are delivering in a confined. No it doesn't say right now and I'm sure that it's probably not quite up to watch stuff where you want it to be where he needed to be. The big thing that you will run into on this with those types of distances the wireless spectrum starts to get pretty crowded up there so I do wonder if you're gonna have. And off spectrum to deliver to a large enough group of people need a bigger balloon. You do need a bigger balloon but he. Would who would I like about it is it's better than wire. You think about. We're going into. All this buildings and where where written literally running wire got to get away from the what we need technology. It you know here in North America where we have Internet. In probably what. 8090% of the population. Has access to Internet yet but keep in mind this does have its own drawbacks though you know this let's say we get a blizzard coming through. You can't keep them blown up there and blizzard in a hurricane you can't keep it up there for that when EF tornadoes going on in the midwest you can't deal with them so it. Like most. Things that we talk about. You're going to have to have a mix of different technologies that end up providing the end solution. It's never going to be just one but this is definitely something that I think is attractive as a piece of the polls. Images on. Is re finding their efforts to deliver packages to U yup I droll and you know chuck is opposed to this technology know this is my dream don't know use I guess to. About having. Drones deliver packages to your house alone I don't want to know electoral I don't I definitely still is my dream is to have. Once in my life a package dropped out of the sky into my hands on walking Oakland but I don't want anything beyond that just once just once while Amazon is developing droll delivery technology. That will basically. It will parachute. Your package in your back here. I love. What a crazy world is at that point yet it's I mean Dave was Amazon and it was it was on a Google was testing the burritos. That that was the well known I don't know that was Tripoli but they didn't have the technology to pull it was. So I think it was cool who was dropping the chipotle burritos you know. But yet this is Amazon trying to continue to refine. Their drone delivery platform again I'd love to have one delivery. I just get nervous if you have so many drones flying overhead. What happens it's nice day you just won a majority Niigata these drones that are don't. How do you think he would restrict it needs a well first of all the drugs are going to be hectic 25300. Feet so that kind. You know you're talking like fifty feet above you know hundred feet above trees it's not that but their electric so you don't hear them. Quiet look like a punch in backs up there and everything it's like I don't know if I want that you know it. I'm kind of a purist about this guy. You know you either got it plays up there but I don't want things literally delivered edit it. They and he would if they didn't deliver like the between five and 9 PM and they didn't deliver between six and 9 AM. The only delivered. You know during a right to do want to take it is the only way I'd be okay with this is if there was just you know you have the national no call no call list right now if you don't wanna be called by telemarketers. I want the national no journalists of I wouldn't I neighbor all. That's his problem yeah it's his problem and no drone zone now I wanna know better you know thrown around my house that had I I just. I'm very particular about these drones that I don't have the excitement that. You do for I well he's just. I look at it in terms of efficiencies. Now all the guys that are driving for UPS right now are pulled over and screen and at the what they've turned to soft at this point their screen and say hey that's my job. They know anything about how many packages it delivered. Maybe if you sit here in our office or he just don't hold when you look at all the UPS drivers that are. Dropping off single package deliveries rate you lose one bag of chips and or something like that that's that's when they're delivered a note now I'd buy Pringles by the case. How many how many things are in case it's eighteen. Eighteen homes unlocked it and Putin. That's you know for Pringles are it's an uncertain though these are healthy pre there'll be only by. Baked chips and I don't buy the Reagan did when my clients tell me get away from. Rick Pitino I got a deep Fryer over Christmas kind. Who makes. Don't know it's small it's it's it's not huge but it's big enough that you can do some damage still and we get homemade French for so how does that work is a gas and electric electric. And that is the size of a crock pot or how big sell yet probably I'd say maybe. You know 1415 inches long 810 inches wide and about maybe ten inches high social make microwave. Yet it's a normal size Michael about that size and I'll tell you we did some French Fries and it would fried ravioli. What did you use for oil. We use both Peter Boyle as well scandal but it goes and then. Use it then DF to throw that all layering. Or you can save it actually weekend day and it's a vehicle uses yes so what we did is we just ported back into the bottle that we used again down the road company uses Indian out of Pineiro releases and noble figured out new book generals are allowed to take till turns black. I'll I'll take heed of the oil. About fifteen minutes shall in you meet your own French Fries at home we certainly did I'd wait 400 pounds if you wanna come over on you know 400 pounds and he imagining. If you need for entry every Friday screaming. Notion that that's coming we've we have our next on the list girls do announce a fried pickles I'm always big fried pickle span got to the wings to. I don't know I'm not a huge wing fan to begin with there's enough meat there from about sweet Davis. I would do some sweet potato Fries after their good deputies of fried broccoli tickling all the health benefits broccoli and anyone you know you can do anything just about anything you want. If it's great. The wall it UDE guys carry wallets to don't care what China and Europe I'd care while. Our wallets are becoming obsolete we're gonna be join in the next segment by Stacy how leak from the New York Times. To explain why we will no longer be carrying wallets and not for the reason you might think. That's next from our insurer match dot com studios. Should go work. We're now joined by Stacy how only of the New York Times to talk about well looks like the demise of my wallet I Stacy Carey. So talk to us about what banks are doing that. From what I read are gonna make wall it's even more obsolete than they already are. That's what they're aiming towards other. Here at number of major banks including bank and act as I'll find out. I deploy the technology that will let you use your mobile well and instead of humor it's yet art and any and did something a lot of bank. And then when I ever hear that the here by the age are actually ready to call it out. How does that work AM just thinking mechanically. I like I have credit cards on my phone. And I just put those credit cards in front of the the reader at the at the store which not that many have but I don't know I have used it on occasion how does that work in this instance with the AT. And actually one of the challenges for the industry is that the couple. And the and then a number I think that using at the one you mentioned. Called an FC uses a chipping opponent in the league parity with the together and work that way bank and acted at the and then several others are for their own island off. Unkind. There are delayed that Hitler used the bank mobile app. Not that he is that and that it was and you identity app of the fact that it's a one time long string of numbers that you add to that the gap. Be it and that's the back but it doesn't acquire and it is our where are your vote no the yet been a steady double but you do it. It's something that some reason it's yet there are a lot of experimentation going on back. You know it it occurs to me Phil Stacey why would they be investing so much money in ATM cards when. Nobody uses cash anymore I mean tat the use of cash seems to be decreasing every year. Definitely is but I need it because they'll do that let you have to pass a little thing now in LA and they'll inspire at pebble some people. Stacey what's the up progress on now biometrics things like common fingerprint. Palm print eyes things like that how how close are we seeing those on ATMs can it seems to me. That would be the type of thing that someone can't really fake he's. Get an experiment with its worth it was a lot. They are actually at major thanking him propelled it is all. Problem and and that recognizes I don't think either. The making yeah is that. Actually I. Hear about it. There is there. People and the bank are leery of the app that. If it gets compromised within very rare but it happened. Please don't eyeball. And fingerprint. That's an. All out the way. What what are the small banks gonna do I'm thinking about the you know. The credit union that has two branches that would occur to me that this technology must be out of sight in terms of expense for small bank. I want. The popping up and support that but it was a simple without and it. Well thank chain in the last but actually isn't about three they that they and the numbers in the pot at the I think that it is an art. To them. The other about the that that there are a lot of and that where now about how into the century art and there independent ones. And that and operated at an input I am trying to decide what I'm potentially where the band to go without. And it went awaiting the weapon that is something that went up like a band of weather come more. We're about security risks. Don't let them. One of the things into acting and say look at them and the effect that wanted to use that they're not a fire people and what that what is it. And they at attic. They Europe that they made in there and that they think that they can out there has been hype about. That. I want you to part with them to Allan green out of the dollar out of their out is that something that the banks are definitely keeping a close eye on it and work on at. Stacey you mention in your story about iris scanning technology. And that somebody figured out how to beat that how did they irises your ally great use and write your checking in and the computers reading your guy. But somebody figured out how to beat that. Yeah I'm very well but it are expected in the lab have been able to figure out. Based about the iris patterns and who you know I was and then their laps that's something that we have at least he will happen in the real world yet but it certainly something that. Security researcher at the but hey that is theoretically possible though BP we are all buckle in the kind of thing out. Very good Stacy thank you very electric time we appreciate it. Stacy Cali New York Times and I tell yeah I. IE at a really care about the technology doesn't ever use cash in on trying to understand why Bank of America are JPMorgan Chase would spend. Dollar one. On this technology. Because. I I just stilts he. Much use for cash in society. Go up five or ten years. Academy's national lightly like imagine how we know what their actual society will be tenure. Even mine there's still a lot of people that do use cash and there are a lot of their transactions. OK we have stores that are saying no more cash recovered that after you've got on but they're still in the minority. You know it's it's a very small amount right now cash that makes up 40%. Of consumer trends jerks hitting. Now with your source this is from a let me see where this studies coming from actually. At the website but the study is from the CNN. The DC PC it's from the Federal Reserve it's actually its worst and pretty 40% of transactions. Yes so 40% of transactions but the value those cash payments is only 14% with a lot of smaller purchases okay. Then you've got 7% of purchases that are made by check I don't know. Who that is I'll be completely. 17% you know who that is the person in front of me the growth for the for gross Ali grandma grandpa who include all out. If if whenever I go to the grocery store it's roars in front and it's wrong to anchor groceries checks it is wrong dude it's wrong. Anyways moving on our credit accounts for 17%. Of transactions via debit is 25%. And then 7% as electronic through mobile payments and things like that don't make sense to me because that people that are saying we have to live within our means. And I don't wanna get credit card bill the end but there's no fraud protection. Debit cards you have no fraud protections of someone takes that part of steals that account or anything you do not of the debate brought protection that you want credit card. But it's it's pretty interesting out into breaking down there when it's all said and on so what did you say 14%. Of the dollars spent. And our cash nineteen percentage checks that might include things like rent payments and things like that. That's where that may be included 16% of the of value using credit cards 18% debit point 7% electron can go weeks without using. Like I can too but it's it still is more common than you think the big threat down the road we talk brought wise. Online purchases. That's were all of the all of your views are moving at this point but could you don't have the safeguards there that you do like with Fiat chip and pin national. Had that happen you know with somebody did lose the opened up a cellphone account yet packed our our AT&T yup this is just a week bill Lewis and winds are hopeful bill so high so many actor counts of depth that's an open up a new cell phone via the online fraud is where you're seeing all of the activity these days you darn leader. Another person for five await saying there working checked in card fraud if we see the fraud and online banking and debit you wouldn't be so quick to dismiss cash that's a thing on the line in debit cards. You were high higher risk there in those situations. Yeah I mean you again the these types of fraud happen more often than people realize you know it's it's not something that's happening to. It happens that it never cost me money is it when when I've been if it's on a debit card it will okay well I don't have it occur. All I ever credit cards and I've I've had my. Identity stolen and somebody and I'll get a call from the credit card company saying hey. Are you in Peru will not okay were shutting down your card will be it will be some new ones. Yeah I mean again I've had credit cards stolen two I had one where. I would is in Chicago for the weekend. And I get a call from my credit card company asked me if I was gentlemen's club in London. And say you know I wasn't a champion to place the same time you know what you dream. And these leaders threaten the that's a good thing. Now accusing you and I think are on now that Cuba is open this could place he can't ease credit cards that Cuba is open Cuban Cuba's been opened for business since last year. Donald Trump does not seem to be looking towards closing down. But Americans are not going to. You know and that's our report I think it was about a week ago that jetBlue was moving from their larger planes down to the small ones on their flights just to La reduce the number of seats there. And you've even seen a number of other companies have reduce the number of flights or cut flights altogether as well just because the demand apparently is not. There right now in my son is one of my I four boys one of them is going. At the end of march. And I didn't relish you can use credit cards in Cuba you have to bring passion that's going to be very dangerous. Along sure amicus you've got to figure again I know it's it's probably relatively affordable in Q results are done it's done is really the prices have gone. Guttenberg that's the airfares are bad you go down there unity get a room is very exposed that he's using your BNP which I think is even bigger risk that he normally again. Yeah that's probably true of wonders so can you use a credit card for like gay Yahoo! tell him down the winners get to carry the cash for something like that it yet to carry cash and yeah I don't like caring that much cash like I carry some just to make sure I always have some in emergency. But. I don't like carrying more than like a hundred dollars capture you know with the best job in the on the island of Cubans that with people aspire to be in Cuba. No tax eater highest paid job and really taxi drivers in Cuba make more than doctors. I thought the south. Does it just has the ball and I have a fact check on me it's just blow my mind as they get tips and you know everybody mcsame wage in Cuba so. Doctors. You're either they're better off not going to that school and in instead becoming taxi taxi drivers is high end perfection. Relatively speaking in Cuba compared to many. It's rather amazing Bennett Roland does make it is so pretty much the same amount I mean it did is another matter what industry you're in complete list seems to make a little bit more but you'll see taxi drivers listed as the same as adopt our identity under the table under the all the time yes yes. Is memory you know we have been to Q Americans have been go to Cuba for fifty years. But people from the UK all over the world people go to Q a million Canadians go to Cuba every year yet two years ago actually Cuba hiked its salary for doctors 67 dollars a month now. 67 a month we think about on unreal. All right let's talk about online loan investors a lot of people what are my boys is doing this he opened up an account with lending club. Not to borrow money. But to invest in these loans. Yeah what lending club does if you're not familiar with them is they are. A platform that helps match people who need small loans generally between five and 20000 dollars with people who have money. To lend to them it typically is not a 121. Lender to. You know who went. Who's the person who bought borrowers toward a market for it when at a bar or match so it's something where. You may putting in 101000 dollars and you get a portfolio fifty won't something like that. But what it does what most people use this for who were borrowing there. Is there typically using it to refinance high interest credit card debt that might be eighteen to one car loans right exactly high interest debt like that. Trying to get the rate down to somewhere between eight and 10% as opposed to eighteen to 2.5 percent. And so. In doing this the loans that you buy typically can have some pretty high interest rates attach them. But what you're seeing is an uptick in defaults on these and actually the worst performance in a lot of these loan categories for lending club and other similar platforms. In the last five or six years and as I understand that that the problem could not get paid exactly and I'll tell you it's. It's interesting because you look at this and then was the couple days ago that we talked about how. You're starting seen uptick in the default rate a first time homebuyers yes. You see some things out there that start to point towards may be a little bit more instability that we've seen in recent years. It's not saying that you're gonna see a repeat of 2008 because I think that's the type of crisis that doesn't happen very often. But there are some signs out there. That you're seeing a little bit of weakening. In what the average American is able to pay for and it just gives you a little bit of cause. For concern analytic Harlem's new that's another area yet you look at. Especially the high risk car loans that default rate has started to tick up on those where it really. We went 'cause the 2008. Crisis. Perpetuated it is well because. In 2008. Not only did you have a credit crisis but then it was followed. By an unemployment crisis right you had exactly millions of people losing their jobs every month. And that just perpetuated the problem yup I remind you that the San Diego shooter. Borrowed the money to buy his weapons and ammunition ammunition from one of these lending clubs I'm not say who was lending club was one of the number we covered this story goes from one of the online lenders there that camp I just remember. Which one which one it was. This little little known Amazon's service turn stuff you want to get rid of in two store credit. This. Very cool I never knew about things he did know I I mean to. I didn't know about this what Amazon does is they have a trade in program actually so if you have used products. That you simply don't need anymore maybe it was a book that you bought that you say hey I'm on don't want this or maybe it's an old computer that you want to trade in video game you know books textbooks electronics movies games. All those types of things what you do as you go to the product page for what you own movement and you can go and look to see if it's something that's eligible for trade and it says right there on the product page. And he'll tell you what the value you will get forward is based on the condition it's in how old it is those types of things. And what they do then is they give you store credit to Amazon and if I mean I might I might start poking at a stop please I would if you do old phones. I don't know if Amazon's in the phone business and there are slaves he do you go to get rid of like say two year old iPhone yet there already a couple of even I know that you know all your major carriers take him back they typically don't give you the dossier pricing in best pricing you get on one of those web site camera with the 1000015200. Box or something like that. But I'll tell you know Amazon's trade in program it's not something I knew about all you have to do to use it. If you can go on Amazon find the product that you have and see if it's eligible for trade in and you might be able to get credit on. And as you guys know that there's something called world monopoly day. What does that mean until yesterday did you found out this. When we return right to compete monopoly tournaments knows it. I into the battleship the the automobiles nice the top cats nice and classy. The wheelbarrow I think it might be time ago that it might be time to what he think. Is ties wheelbarrow Wilbur I mean. Because they're trying to update at the trend up they. Everybody wanted to be the racecar Vista I'll be all honorees Erica. Our let's move on. E-commerce for farmers. Now. The story is how farmers are no longer purchasing their seed in fertilizers. Through collapsed he is no co ops are. It's effectively they it at the farmers a lot of cases own partisan correct yup and it would be local store co op would be in the town. So I used to go to the waiver and call 21 of Burlington Vermont you did look at you and and eat that's where farmers would go. But what they've discovered is that you can buy. A lot of stuff on line at half the price yeah how about the agents for big money they spend tons of money. Yeah you're you're not talking about people going out and buying you know a small thing around up or something like that you're talking about being able. To buy. The equipment or the products necessary. To deal with multi acre farms hundred acre farms a lot of cases and it it's really transformed how these farmers. Are doing their business there because saves them time it saves them money and can help make those forms more efficient that. It does unfortunately hurt some of those local businesses that used to be supplying them when I found fascinating was. 63%. Of rural residents. Have broadband. Internet access as amazing actually the museum 37 do not. A lot of people. You meet come you know because we live in an urban area. We're we just gotta have rightly you don't unity think about what what I've found more shocking actually was at 27% of people in cities still don't have broadband access. I don't believe that. You do you believe that boy I don't have any data did discounted so it it seems crazy but. And don't have anything that I American royalties and try to think of an American city. That wouldn't have. Prior bad act of substance while not saying that the whole city might not but it might be parts of it don't for whatever reason or just it and it's not saying. Keep in mind I don't think it's necessarily saying access this might be people that haven't actually right then I that I would believe. But he than it did to have 23% that don't have Internet via broadband. The broad band has plateaued do in this is from the Pew Research Center. In 201567%. Of adults. Had brought him. And that's across that's rural and urban so it's you know you're not talking it's it's pretty amazing actually when you look at it there. To prove what kind of an exciting life I have I was reviewing the house republicans' health care plan. And some that I like some of it I don't like. First thing that I like is there are removing the band. You won't have to be won't be required to buy health venture the entire system breaks down the line that bet the you know it's it's. That that was where cut the yanks that a lot of people are just people that sit and don't wanna be required by the government to buy where she thinks or the next was on the individual mandate or on the employer I thought I. The more that was on the employers. That's actually what adds the cost to businesses appear small business here mandated to provide. Those coverages that's were I felt you were getting more it's a thought get a better case there to remove the employer mandate as opposed to the individuals. Lot of my friends are libertarians and it was the individual mandate it bought. You know the disease it's. You know what the chrome with that is that random crap happens it happens to people who oftentimes don't expect them giving example I've buddy of mine who in the fall. He's my age had a heart attack. Really wasn't exposed it was a genetic thing that they'd never found before and he's lucky that he's alive at this point. But had a heart attack Twain nine years old. If you didn't have health insurance do you know what his cost would have been all probably half a million bucks so quarterly again like those the things that if you don't have that coverage. All of a sudden is just a question of whether you're paying for someone you know it's if it. Did that well this doesn't leave this system okay if you don't have coverage why do you have to have insurance. That you think through what you will that is if that's the problem is that we're focusing on coverage and on treatment. We'll talk about it is another day.
