I. This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. In the past we've spent a lot of time talking about French elections in years gone by didn't really matter. Who the president of France. It was going to be well this year it's a whole different ball game hi everybody variant chuck with you on the day after the French elections where the polling. Actually turns out to inaccurate and it was a landslide. Yeah it was this one wasn't even close it ended up being a 66 point 1% to 33 point 9% victory. Four Emanuel macro and the 39 year old former investment banker. Defeating marine Le pan by pretty much at 21 margin here and this one. Pretty much no doubt but today there are no no doubt are so correct obviously coming in. And pretty much doing exactly what most people expect you know get a kick out of we refer to him as an investment banker but he only had that job for four years. It's that's enough and you know that's I mean that's that's a decent chunk of time in finance. And it's it's going to be interesting because. As much as you know some people want to portray him as an establishment candidate. He still has no political experience this going to be the first office yet for held so it's you know I I don't know what you're necessarily going to get with them I don't know if he's going to be effective I don't know if he has the chops to you know coming go to parties behind him right up the next election is in the month correct in June he started his party years ago so it's you know that if this is give the guy to give their credit I mean it's an impressive. I can't give I give him credit I just have no idea how it's going to be this is exactly the same as Donald Trump coming in office I have no idea if he's going to be effective you know beat the executioner as you can being able to come out and be an effective leader. It's pretty much the same I've no idea if he's gonna be good at what he does the big difference though is he's committed to staying in the eurozone where it is cleaned up and was not. He does have much more us centrist policy positions. At least as far as how we look at things in the US. I think after a member if you are a centrist in the US you are considered conservative in France is France is very much a socialist system. That is built over there and so he's campaigned on you know getting rid of some of the socialist aspects of you know French culture at this point so. I don't know what exactly he's going to do what he's going to be able to do. You know part of middle kind of depend on how quickly he's able to get up speed. And whether or not he sees you know some kind of you know. Problems and I guess learning our pains growing pains I would seek started off act the road he did June elections are critical. If he doesn't have enough seats to govern. It could be a real mess. Yeah it it it could be I mean again I I think kids. This is a pretty clear sign from voters that I think you're going to go in this direction. I still think you mean look France is always going to be. Much more socialist than what you see in the US is just how it's set up a few go and take a look. But some of the laws that are on the books there in terms of what you can say what you can't I mean can't hire people it we would laugh at this kind of stuff. If if it was tried to wise if we tried to put it in place here but. It's it's a different country it's different culture. And and they you know have a very different view wants some of these things by the rumor sell the news is that what's going on with European market and it's it's it's just pretty quiet I mean obviously Asia rallied though right is around I mean even in in Europe overall in the footsie was up. You know it's the you have the CAC down just a little bit less than 1%. You know over a volatile one on nine euro's pretty much holding steady right now 109 Leo slightly quarter percent sell off put. I don't really think that anything's moving discuss this what people expect news already baked in as that person. I Sinclair broadcast. Broadcasting. Has reached a deal to buy Tribune media for about four billion dollars contract congratulations to those of you. Who own shares in Tribune your shares are up. Yeah and this is. A fairly big deal as far as. Overall lot TV stations and in the acquisition that Sinclair is making your Tribune Co. Biggest single station they own is WG NO KV station against the cubs games no matter where you are in the country. World yup pretty much in the world you can be in Tokyo and still watching the cubs which is wonderful. And you have a 173. Now yeah and they're picking up Tribune had what 42 attribute had in big markets. Yet it's it's in large markets the expectation is that there is going to have to be. Some kind of sell off of some of these stations just because. Federal laws FCC laws say that 81 company cannot own TV stations that reach more than not 39%. Of the country and combines. These would end up Bob reaching about 50% so would be too much concentration. I'm kind of surprised by the pricing. On this you know you if you look at the value of TV stations I would think there is worth considerably less. And they were prior to the advent of Netflix Hulu and in this one or something like this just because of WGN and the cubs and they have such a national and global following a live sports have proven to be even with the NFL declining. They still are one of those things that you know make people stop him and kinda watch TV. I wonder if that does play into this just because of that cubs deal. Now today the the they've been expressed an owner a desire to move forward and cable by owning more local TV stations Sinclair would have increased leverage. To negotiate distribution agreements with PP TV distributors and that's one thing more let her track when they go to. Talk to the different outfits Disney investors. They're gonna be reporting and Natalia pretty I I can all do you guys I can only assume this is going to be bad. Based on what we're seeing for behavior out of ESPN ESPN is. The ultimate New England company based at Bristol Connecticut. In the layoffs have been enormous. They have and and again we've gone through the listed talking major TV personalities from just about all of their programs with the talking about baseball tonight when you talk about their NHL coverage whatever it is across the board. You've seen significant cuts there and I'll tell you if I am going into this this meeting. I'm not optimistic about ESPN's business overall just because. I think that you're gonna find that their business is weaker than they guided previous well just based on what are we differ court cutting number in tunes like 700000 Q war 762000. Gamble cut the cord and lot of those people were paying ESPN eight bucks a month. Yeah and any talk about where ESPN is right now they are all eleven point 7% in terms of subscriber numbers in the last five years now. OK that is the rule law that's effectively where you are since the beginning of baht 2012 now they end with cord cutting picking up. Is there any way to do it by ESPN and stream it can you can you just say ESPN hasn't come out with a direct over the top option they haven't and the reason why is. The number of people so if you if you look at the number of people at the peak that subscribed ESP NIC subscribe via spin pretty much had cable. There OK number of people that had ESPN at one point was about a 102 million apple okay. What happens is that only about 1516 million of those watch it on a monthly basis because. NFL fans aren't necessarily the same as baseball for its you don't have that crossover. Necessarily and so what you end up with if everyone who actually watched it wanted to pay for the need to be forty dollars a month. To equal the rights fees they get so. I don't think anyone in their right mind wants to pay forty dollars just for ESPN and that's why they haven't come out and on a straight over the top ten box because they knew if they did. They wouldn't get the same kind of revenue. But Tucker's cut the cord you're about to cut the cord in our poll question today is have you cut the cord. With cable television you know it's and it's remarked I can't wait it the your generation. I very few of you have land lines radiate neither one I'm assuming now the way mentally and I don't believe in them. Very in and now your generation is leading the lakers if you ask you you know what's remarkable is if you ask college students about cable TV none of them have. Cable TV they all live on line. And when they graduate from college and they start their own household none of them have any interest they would even consider getting cable T yep. The end is dry even not even a thought process where they'd say oh yeah what's I think about getting cable TV. Then there's the story about Comcast charter striking a wireless partnership deal. Now we talked about Comcast coming out with a cell phone platform sounds like you're gonna try to do with chart action actually could be pretty powerful company. What do I know that they had been using they were give you some of Verizon's network is well the Comcast and charter is part of this deal. I've pretty much made an agreement to say look we're not gonna make a material merger acquisition in wireless without the other's consent for up to a year so it appears to be. Our it appears that Comcast is deepening ties with charter. And the I'm curious exactly. What the what what's gonna end up coming of this is obviously this kinda ties in to net cord cutting I think. That we were talking about I think Comcast ceremonies or I think they see that hey we're not going to be able to survive on just this cable business alone. We need to get into wireless in order to be a long term company and they have access to the Verizon platform they do so this is gonna be interesting and Comcast. If they're able to pull this off right and do district and make this transition over the next three to five years right. This might be one of the smartest decisions that I've seen it's not gonna pay dividends today put it something that over the next few years as the landscape changes. I think this could end up being really really Smart. What do you think about this. In 1935. The average broiler chicken reach the slaughter ready weight of two point eight pounds and ninety days with that's that's how much a chicken way back then yeah. And according to the national chicken council. Today boilers are an average of six pounds and they take 47 days I usually go for like seven and a half pounder saw what you think about that as we prepare for our next interview can there be talking about slow growth chickens. That paste that will be joined by Stephanie Strom from the New York Times what's gone on with chicken and the way. They grow chickens. Today vs the way they did in 1935 it's staggering if you've ever had farm fresh chicken you know and talking about that's our next topic from our insurer match dot com studio. Offers some time to for fighting house now and offers except it's extremely competitive okay. And so they have to temper their expectations. Oftentimes they're they're paying more than the other half to. Pay more than the asking price and a minutes is quite common right now in and in some cases they're actually having to to research other towns and rooted in. Considered first because. You know it's very campaign can't afford their dream home exactly. I'm getting we're telling first time homebuyers to really be aware. Of all the mortgage products that are out there that are relevant to Tulsa but this leaders thirty yes so we're really excited about this product we just launched it is called leader thirty. And essentially what it is is that fixed rate loan from. Where if you sign up to pay your mortgage automatically electronically and everybody does for the first year you get to lower your interest repayments by one person. That's very helpful offer because what it does is it gives you a break during that first twelve month period exactly so gives you little payment relief for your moving expenses we still have the security of the fixed rate mortgage. And I agree with you know I think a lot of it either you let people get a little bit used to use what you do is it. Says the dark or white meat. Clayton and see a little less mean and a little more dark mean. Americans now are ending it like lord dark many years and you're the only one enlighten me you know maybe at the. How much more does it cost Purdue. To grow slow growth chicken verses was innocent of the rapid once they've been grown for the last twenty years. They mean it that MacArthur well actually the additional 28 get the urge because they live longer they get them or boot. And it's about thirty. War. Read. And yet when you and you look at where all of our app everybody I'm not in the so yeah but it'd be a big issue and in the creek chicken producers are wary. I just what you give that number again. As it relates to 1935 month long. If they in 1935 folks the average chicken. That was slaughter ready week three pounds call it and took ninety days today they weighed six pounds in the take 47 days and the I I'm not a scientist. And and I don't have. Did a degree in. In in technology. I mean doesn't that sound what's wrong if we're if we're growing our chickens that that. A match and deflate kids are grown at the same scenery Nelson Mughelli. Eight year old that are six to 220 pounds now they get it just isn't right the other thing that you have to keep in mind though one thing that I find interesting. Is historically if you look at the cost. Associated with chicken. One of them not even chicken any kind of bomb meet at this point that one of the biggest reasons why costs has gone up. Nor does any of their own slaughter in okay my grandma now okay. When my on my dad's side. Used to come home with live chickens killed slaughter and do it all in house you don't have to pay anyone to do that if you're doing it when's the last time I hear about anyone doing that in their own house now. In the rural communities they give UN to rural New Hampshire their people it's the growth of their own children's 100%. Otherwise half it's no I just wanna go to the grocery store happening in I'm dawn but there's a huge costs associated with eight. Don't chicken between it and while putting in a plastic bag having it sit on the shelf for a week nobody knows how to do it now they can only think about a hundred years ago. You know a lot of people lived on farms of I was at. While others just as New York's in my grandmother's two bedroom apartment she's going down the market and killing chickens and bring him back to two bedroom apartment for seven kids she would by the chicken. And then it would be live when she brought it home by the live chickens bring him back kill and clean and everything ready to go me now is my my grandfather still talks about this day. Yeah the I don't know lead the I'm looking at some of the text message and finally it's as. I would never pay four dollars a pound for chicken. It all I guess it's a matter of you know. Liddy can afford it right and and whether your Lou wounded notified and other finalists as red ranger. Is the best slow Grotrian. I just don't recall that when you go to a grocery store university one Tucker you're the only guy in the room the shops at the horror from the red Granger know what the slow growth the overseer who I've never really looked for CI. It's especially butcher shops I mean hotel shops a good way there's there's a couple specially butcher shops that do happen but if you're looking kinda your mainstream you know Shaw's stop the job market basket and then I don't know I've really seen him around there and I'm someone like typically my Sunday dinners I buyer roast chicken just seconds that thing all week. But again I'm buying the dollar fifty pounder a male check out next time but I I always buy organic chicken anyway so maybe that as a minority I don't know right. Time now for him. Street watch a look at the market's performance so far today but I do Berrian jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. It is now time for Wall Street watcher joined by Mike Armstrong here. Mike go what are markets doing today. We're chuck again like this but this morning that slightly down the Dow was down 26 points about 110 of 1% in the yet he's down. 2% to about 110 of 1% market seemed to be just kind of didn't abate here digesting some of the French election news. Although we are seeing a little bit of movement internationally. The French market is actually down nearly 1%. Which is a bit surprising but yeah I think again just digesting the news is that significant. Decisive in the crowd when he took away 65% of the votes. And likely eat if you. More likely to stay together after all this but again buying on the rumors and now it's kind of reverting to that means there. It's seemingly in Nikkei. Japanese index opened up about two point closed 2.3 percent up that once closed since Wednesday to kind of making up some ground there incessantly as quote several days. Might be a big deal enough fashion and apparel here with Kate Spade agreed to be bought by coach what do you tell us about this deal. Yet it is the deal that's been rumored for a few months now until finally came out. Coach will be acquired Kate Spade a 2.4 billion dollars or eighteen if the issue there. Stocks up while she Kate Spade is up about. 8% today point 2% to eighteen dollars and 36 cents coaches actually up on the news as well. Five point 8% so it sounds like investors like both sides of the deal there not disappointed by the outcome. It's been together to point out that you know. Kate Spade is still down pretty significantly from their hive over 24 dollars share based on poor earnings in just taken awhile to decide on the deal. Lastly Berkshire Hathaway over the weekend had their annual meeting it's called the Woodstock for value investors. What can you take away from mod this up big gathering of investors out in Omaha this weekend. That's right it's always yeah cabbage and to watch obviously kind of the king of value investing there next. Really sitting down and answer questions from investors in a couple important pieces but I took away. Berkshire is currently sitting on. 96 and a half billion dollars in cash it's all healthy here domestically too so you know you can read that as having a tough time finding attractive valuations you can also read it as a lot of cash the could be deployed in. Relatively short order they see any good deals. The stock is down about one quarter percent so far this morning they'd get announced that they replacing at least seven different CEOs of some their major corporations. I spoke to retiring and then I'd get like some comments that have Warren Buffett this morning. Ask why you didn't invest in Amazon earlier in one word answer stupidity. Just I take it that way it warns and profit is over it very honest about investments than. Called self balloting makes mistake that was an inch in one. Very good Mike thanks for the time tonight. Musician and philanthropist Bono turns 57 years old this week crap in them older than. Name we've always been older than Bonn I know but I didn't know until today. They don't you want to eat it to be older than somebody you don't know but now I know animal does and on anyway. In which year was the band U2 form remember Arnold's 57 years old are tech's number is 68680. In which year was the band U2. Formed. First listener with their correct answer to that question wins it 25 dollar gas card gas going down two point filter whole tank with 25 dollar gas card against tech's number 68680. I'd like to what do large daily United Airlines update. I had this point they beat somebody else no United Airlines. Wu a woman from on Newark who was intending to go to Paris but she end up in San Francisco I have to make Agassi that. And supposedly what happened is that they've changed the gate of the flight at the last minute but made the notification and English and he only spoke French. And so what happened is she didn't realize and for some reason the gate agent scanned the ticket and it actually let her through. And there was no one else in her seat somehow and so instead of ending up in pairs she ended up in. San Francisco. And then had to go through an eleven hour layover as she took a flight to France so overall it took her 28 hours to make which should be a seven hour flight that's actually. So there's that eight yeah I can't blame the united for that right. Man I kinda canned a bit odd how did she get on the plane. She missed it confused why it was an Eiffel Tower and a big red average in the San Francisco should go up the plane. But I orally you're sitting on the plane you see them happily. Wrong way. So they need to act. I just flew united over the weekend had no complaints were queuing up. The letter of new work actually and that took me to myrtle and I went you know black guy. The scores it's. Yes the Mercury but back to a party the first rule like called class you don't talk about fight club and completes on me today anyways. Yeah I had no complaints and all my flights were ahead of schedule and everybody was super nice there are few empty seats on on the flights. You know no surprise there from the dead rabbits that book exactly and I thought that they were kind of but knowing the over the top nice to their customers trying to cannot make up via bat beyond allowing way to go out. Like they apologized like four different times why idea why there's so much for turbulence at the completely electric cart now. As short flight who cares it's it's which card but it. And and no complaints. They quick announcement on behalf of Armstrong advisory group if you have an IRA. For the next month or two we're gonna have the opportunity to give Tucker some wedding advice. Chuck you've recently married don't jump. It be the advice that we're talking about is what couples want for their wedding presents. Peace. Peace quiet peace and quiet and let. Deb what what's interesting is that you're seeing a big shift. In what Mullen heels are asking for. As wedding presents and is as opposed to. Asking for you know that the previous big ticket items you know vacuum cleaners silverware and dishes things like that seeing a lot more asking for. Things that are more experience based money to go on a trip and things like that money for the honeymoon. And it's it's it's a pronounced shift that's happening at this point. Yeah actually there's a sickle honey fund this actually set up just to do this we're pretty much someone can say hey here's the itinerary we have planned for our honeymoon. And you can bias apart of our trip you know we there snorkeling classes orchard to museum or something. Yet that's exactly actually went on during my sister used that got here. I think it was called like honeymoon fund something silly like on them yeah exactly just add that to your wedding registry so we did that as well I think what if you want a bigger check than you give some advice Oca. BP is this is the way I'm listening say you're buying a house this is the way old rich people that's okay. The they have this new thing called feather the next and it allows them to set allows you Tucker have to set up a crowd funding platform. To send family and friends focus only. On real estate and home improvement needs so there's a guy like Q right you don't own a home yet from looking to Beilin. And if I were invited to a wedding. Right and I saw that as an option. I would write a bigger check than I would 40. You know the honeymoon or greater bigger check early for anything. Because then I would say. Hey here's a young couple they're trying to get established. Yeah and are against that a given 500 bucks on me in the thousand bucks was I call William Torre does it's it's feather the nest and on and aunts and and really. Which you think about all the crappy yet for weddings right. If they give. I got miraculously little crap. You know I got miraculously little crap well I can including we got two wonderful beer helmets that have little things on each side just so that we could you know party notable air and everything. It's of the ones who watched football we just got those guys and ready to go. Fed did the next Tucker I wrote that down I could always and that I just think it's the we did influence the amount of your donation to the well I have a standard dollar amount based on my relationship with the person so this one for friends this one for family there's one for I don't know how I got invited to this kind. Rita were category I I take a different approach is I don't get invited debate like you guys are in the winning circuit I have a standard out how many how many weddings if he has been to actually counted this older maybe about a month ago. Last five years have been 29. Yeah I I think I'm coming up on number five this fall. In the last five years the last yes let's Auburn. Then I did happen but it's starting to ramp up with a my friend herb went 29 so when he got two more this year average cost 15100 bucks. Depends EnerNOC. You know your image you have to bias suitors something like that can be more I'd say yeah in general average cost is probably between thousands of the last three weddings have been too I them. In the wedding party. So it's. Prize money big money money behavior in the party that it may get. I am just telling you. And is. You know an old guy right if if I'm invited to wedding and I see that as an option. Pirated bigger. They used you also try to eat more at the waiting to cover the cost of I always eat more you know the way I always yet so I appreciate that and thirds. I would try to stand right I don't drink no I don't drink talkers all my bargain. And went and got to figure out Billy lose we're the ones that Julia went with the appetizers come out of that's where you gotta you gotta be right on that threshold there's so the ages. Stupid those little guys up all the bacon wrapped scalps and stuffed mushrooms Susan. Be patient yes you know we we see a lot of first time homebuyers who are making five and fifteen offers two for fighting house and offers except it's extremely. Okay. And so they have to temper their expectations. Oftentimes or they're paying more than the other half to. Pay more than the asking price and a yeah it is quite common right now in and in some cases they're actually having to to research other towns rooted in. Considered first because. You know it's very compact can't afford their dream home exactly. I'm getting we're telling first time homebuyers to really be aware. Greg let's start first with the partisan global value fund investor class can you talk a little bit about what this fund invests in. And what their overall the sixes. Certainly standards make the best sentiment you the non stop. There are looking forward and fairly equal value open at all out fairly stable balance sheet and that is that. Utley on the next and on about forty to fifty duck boat that much concentrated all. In looking at the other portfolio of companies that they tried to put together what are some of the key things that they're typically examining. Yet they're typically looking for a little more stability in your typical audience after they don't invest a lot of heat got to wait and blah. The trouble. So get stability is important. You know a business model that make sense of the long term important. Approximately do they have any guidelines as far as how much they have in the US vs international order they kind of fluctuate depending on market trends. It. One way or the other Albert. And looking at expenses to investors what the cost to own this bond. That being here. Our little above average. Are you won 26 billion. The unto itself is not very big a little under four billion dollars. I'm only in the manager is done a great double O. Let's turn over down and talk about the Jensen quality growth fund. What exactly is this fund looking to do. It's a distinctive. On. Seem editors will only that the company has generated at least 50% return on equity eat and the previous and year. So the bar pretty. Or. Companies are very able. And it looks like this is an even more concentrated fund and the one we're just talking about. That's correct it on what I've heard dot. So these are pretty much that they're placing pretty substantial bets on these different companies here what's they're track record how good are they had actually picking winners. They're very good effort but moderate to that they are the concentration volatility here at very low I. Companies that the council on that we all looked quite well. And downturn. And potentially he tries he pasted. What's the cost for owning. A fund like this. The these are little more modest. 87 basis point. About average for. I got you know on. Where do you see both of these feeding into well a an investor's portfolio what rolled they serve and. All the global value fund had a Victor via. The value slot well certain degree obviously he the mother on. But the current but the US and and not US companies. Quality growth as the only wrote one large we're on a little Italy Poland. And Alex run it up but not nearly. A lot of. Very good Greg thank you very much for joining us today. I firmly. Greg Carlson from Morningstar and the other kickers on those funds if you want to look them up on your own. The Jensen quality growth fund as the ticker JE. And SX. And the other one we talked about the artisan global value fund has that ticker AR TG. Acts you know I can tell you those funds have been around a long time. I've been around long time and I remember those funds. Back from a mutual fund days in the nineties. And they are there. Good funds in the ninety's they're probably still pretty good ones and get tighter cigarette business that mutual fund business. Is having a tough times it is the amount of money I everytime I read a report. It's never that there inflows into mutual funds it's always how much money did mutual fund industry lose in the last quarter. Yeah I'm pulling up some of the the recent statistics here just take a look at them just if we do have data from the beginning of the day. That was released on May third. And effectively. What we're seeing right now looks like actually you might see some slight inflows actually. If you do it's just because for one do you might have some net inflows actually right now even though you've seen some real outflows. In recent years in recent years so I'm here to see a lot of those funds go out of business and and a lot of the mutual fund companies are slimming down their offerings yeah saying hey we used to have 23 mutual funds now we're gonna have a team than a few years later fifteen I had to attend to agree I think that you're seeing and you know what I think was a black rock that talked about it a few months back where they said look we're going to be get rid of a lot of our managers and moved into computer based. Investing where we can just because a we can save money and be my actually perform better what happens when the four went to a intricately. I don't think I don't know that day I could see that happening where forward today you know the big providers. Like fidelity to says okay we're gonna now start offering ATF's and that means a security starting to see some that are offering YouTube's I don't know law who is right now just examine dabbled in that market too much. But I know that you're starting to see some along the margins that are offered ETFs in 41 case. Dow is down 27 points oil depending on how you trades this is good news it's up 34 cents at 4656. Were actually gonna talk about oil in the next segment. Gold surprisingly up a couple dollars gold trading up 1229 I thought last night with the French elections to be down in price. That we should all be naming our spouse as the primary beneficiary of our individual retirement accounts and Portland case yet generally that's what we recommend and in the case of 41 k.'s are actually required to name your spouse. As the beneficiary there so in general. Spouses are gonna typically be the first person that you name as a beneficiary on any retirement plan. It simply makes things the cleanest and easiest how you've treated happens to how has treated chuck if your wife inherits your IRA. Did she have to start taking the money out right away how how's that investment treated once she receives notice is why we say it's the easiest and cleanest because of the spouse dies and other spouse inherits an IRA or 41 K they don't have to start taking any distributions right away. Unless they're already over the age where they have to take them at seventy and have to begin right. And so you named your spouses and hiring who do you typically name is a subsequent her successor arrive at that picture lot of times what you do that you named one of the kids or both or all three however many kids you have they'll be named as the contingent beneficiary. Many of you may have been expecting a large stock market rally as a result of the month on victory in France last night and I think really you got the European market rallied when upon one. To run the right we in the right but to run against Penn and that was what three weeks ago. Yeah exactly and and so on this news up for its markets down about three quarters of percent the footsie over. Europe is up a quarter percent US markets are just about completely flat the Dow is down ten points the S&P down two NASDAQ down eight. Oil today. Continuing to rebound slightly back up above 46 now after falling from about 52 down below 46. And gold today at 122810. Year US treasury backed up 2.3 seven hide bodies Berrian chuck and I guess that's the the SEC the the one thing it is catching me a little bit by surprise is gold I would have thought he might see a decline in the price of gold were not. No not really seem pretty much holding steady at this point silver's literally completely flat right now. It's it's a relatively quiet day in markets I think the most activity if they saw the Nikkei about 2.3 percent overnight. But in general right now. Just not a whole lot of movement these. Markets folks you may recall that. The trump administration has decided to raise tariffs on Canadian imports that two terrorists that they're racing on. Our milk. And they're raising tariffs on Canadian Tom timbers of your building a house of your home builder. If you've already seen this date in the price of lumber when you're going to buy it. And at that time I said do you. Well you know don't expect candidate did you stand by and accept that. Canada and in fact announcing on Friday. That they are now going to increase tariffs on some American products that are being imported from and so that's coming well Cole right. So what they didn't say they were going to the city room to study. Now whether or not to do which is pretty strong sign that they're going to do something kind of like when you walk up to the guy that faceoff and you say do you wanna go. Yeah pretty much in. And look this is unfortunately this is how trade wars tend stark is they kind of retaliatory one good to the next and all of a sudden next thing you know. You have trading partner that you export about 280 billion dollars worth of goods to and your best pass 290 billion dollars worth of and you sit there and you say okay wire we you know fighting each other when really we don't have a problem with each. It's it's not good to see this all into doing is driving up cost war the middle class typically attacks. What if it is that's what a terror there's terror easy it is a tax when it when it's all said and on it is. I find it amazing that we want lower taxes on everything except for stuff like this. It's its attacks and. Is you know US is said hey we were being treated unfairly by timber producers and buy milk producers and you don't eat you can make that argument I'm not debating within the arguments about but the problem is. Then the fourth the other country. Automatically he's gonna say well let's look at what we're importing from the united state outlook say look if Canada wants to lose money producing timber. Let them lose money and let them bring it on you like if if you're willing to sell me you're good at below market value. Great so it's like I'll be like if let's say you knew a guy that was low and sell you gasoline. Per dollar gallon. Would you buy yup so what do. Exact I just I find it amazing that we don't. See things that way you know it's and I get that you know it's it's obviously the threat of job loss in the US but you have to remember if it's benefiting. Everyone in the country and because someone else is being a dome businessman. Let them do it. You don't normally if I told use that stock was down by almost 3000 dollars per share and price. You feel a little nervous raids say holy cow well Berkshire Hathaway shares trading of 247039. Dollars today. Down 1% in their share price is in fact down 2960. Dollars. Per share yeah and they it's it's actually seen. You know volume of 136 shares traded today so a lot of good amount of activity given that they normally trade 264. Shares today. Out of the odd. Get this these are on the issue of 769000. Shares Bailey treat 200. A day okay. As a result it's. Mostly institution noted that the issue is almost non it's always individuals all individual B shares a lot more instantly share is only 24%. Owned by institutions where's the B share. I believe is significantly higher has he lost his moto Warren Buffett. He's lost mode I just think it's tough when you're running a company that's worth as much as it is when it's a 400 billion dollar company can't do the same things that you could do. When it was 400 million dollars of how do you think people feel about him sit in on ninety billion in cash. What is very self critical. I mean it's I think in general they're probably not ruled that but the fact is when when Buffett tends to make moves he tends to do pretty well so when he tends to make moves and everybody else is selling to accuse. I just think about some of the deals he needs. Back in 20082009. Members of those new member of the Bank of America deal with the Goldman Sachs deal let me note booster just. Genius yet the so Buffett back in 2011. He put about five billion dollars in the bank America. Within six years turned into thirteen house bill would tell what the deal did you ever the terms of that it was it was the warns that the ball right. Well he he bought preferred stock. And getting paid 8% to wait on warrants for stock that was priced too cheaply any unique exercises shares I think is his strike price of six dollars a share seven dollar yet pulled up pronounces at great price was seven dollars a share. And that was when he had bought in back in August 2011 were talked about Bank of America so Warren Buffett back in I was eleven and and he's also paid a 6% annual dividend on the state city gets 300 million dollars a year just for holding the stock right. And then on top that he gets you know whatever whatever goes up pretty much. And if Bank of America ever wanted to buy the shares back they have to pay a 5% premium to him in or to buy the shares back from its stop paying him that 6% dividend and they convert to common yes. Well lucky ID es he's had some deals that have done very well for him. He's missed the boat on a few things and he also still has the option to purchase an additional 700 million shares at seven dollars and fourteen cents a share up until September of 20/20 one and Bank of America's trading I think it about 24 dollars shared yeah. Well that deal that's a good deal that he made. I think he regrets he knowledge that he regrets not having purchased both Google and Amazon. There and he says the time look I don't understand these businesses I don't understand what they're doing that makes money. Many still looking back on now which is what you know while I was dumb not to believe in Jeff Bezos in the business model. He was trying to build who I think I view a little differently is Google at the time. They didn't have anything that they did on their own it was that there was nothing the product that they have an enlarging the biggest product they still have them. Is bibles physical presence that really sell anything on there and I know they got their small Smartphone division and they got some other little pieces. But they don't really sabotage on their own its advertising company. And at some point there has to be fears that looked just as Google did. Two newspapers and so forth. What if someone else comes along it finds a better way at the time and and that's the fear with the with those things don't always say they're big competitors face. Yeah Facebook's biggest competitor out there I note that Verizon's trying to build up their oath platform with AOL and Yahoo! I think that's it losing that. But I think in general that's the fear that advertising is what we saw print media get taken out over the last fifteen years now we're seeing cable media. Don't the same way. What you know the fear I think is what happens you know if you see this same thing happened to the Internet I don't know what it would be. Well what if you want musket right all of a sudden one day we wake up we go little chips and that we don't even need to like go on line in what could do you know what. What if that's the case. Warren Buffett does well when there's blood in the street you know the that's when he mixes. These investments and that's when he and everybody else's panic. That's when Warren Buffett doubles when he gets as elf and guns he likes to call that he's got ninety billion dollars in cash there's a lot of things you by the other probably as though it's hard for him to take a position meaningful position the company well this is he's got so much cash you can't go out and let's say that he wanted to take the position let's say that he did think that Netflix was the next big thing okay. If you wanted to buy ten billion dollar position in Netflix first ball doesn't even deploy enough ms. cash it's like he's buying like 20% of the company's gonna move the market just tries to buy right. That's that's. He it's a nice problem to have and that is the problem that. Newly come back we're talking about labor shortages I don't know if they've you know anybody in the construction business but I had the opportunity in the last several weeks to talk to people. That are in construction I'm not talking about their working as a carpenter I'm talking about the guys it's rotten running the job in running those companies. The financial exchanges of live on FaceBook so make sure like your page and watched the guys break down the latest on the markets every day beginning at ten on the financial exchange radio network. My favorite newspaper in the world as the Wall Street Journal a growing labor shortage. In the commercial real estate industry is driving up the cost of some projects. And could complicate lawmakers' plans for a one trillion dollar infrastructure spending program this according to contractors. And chuck I've had the opportunity I've talked to. Developers big and small and they all have the same issue. Hiring workers is their biggest challenge right now they've got lots of work but finding guys. They can do HTC work finding electricians that are licensed and they can get to the job on time it's really tough to find work it. It continues to be a problem in a big reason for that is that we're simply not training our kids with a lot of these skills were not sending enough kids trade schools were not sending enough kids. Into the trades and unfortunately. What it means is that when you have an opportunity to do this kind of building construction. You're not able to actually tap into it and in really deep get that workforce out there. Doing what needs to be done what is overall wage growth running two and a half two and a half percent in the construction trades wages are growing at 5%. And then 2550. War. Unemployment rate be you know you look at that can you pull up men 2554. Because you know if you're if you're in that. Age group write your physically you're in pretty good shape still I would think in 45 to 54 men for April 17 it's 3.4 percent. Unemployed yet well. That's not what I mean it's tight if you look at where was in the peak in this is. Actually this is the not seasonally adjusted data which kind of interest and the peak was in February of ten. Which was eleven point 2%. So what do you do me and really get how to her from my is that is this a government issue is how do you address the labor shortage as we've heard it from. Restaurant I was talking to Ed Lambert who's the morning show guy on the cape today. And you know he was tell me said Barack talked to guys in the restaurant hospitality business they're they're panicky right now. We talked to golfer Arnold neat. He said the same thing easy they don't know what to do they can't find workers with a there's two problems the first is that we're not training enough workers in these fields that. The second is just that we don't have the kind of population growth that we need. Is it is is it a wage issue because of the people that say well they should they're just cheap and they they should be pain or monitor their pain double. The average increase rates so at some point you you hit sealing it in the it technically it's always a wage issue. Yeah like when you break it down at the end of the day if you paid every plumber 250000 dollars you'd have a whole lot more Palmer's okay there's this company in Indianapolis. And in this you can read in the article dealer. Electric GA YL all our electorate of the Indianapolis. Has opted against bidding on jobs because we did have the people. They've added seventy employees in the last two months and they have 200 empty positions. Yeah this is just they did to tell you the severity. It it's it's a real problem in that the thing that I continue to tell people is look for everyone who gets so nervous about outsourcing this outsourcing that. You can't outsource these jobs you can't. Send at what point does do the does the president come forward and say look why don't we have amnesty. For the illegal immigrants and we have a program where. If you're an illegal right where and having amnesty for you and word that you have to take a job EU if the Dem if you wanna amnesty. And your immigration status yet stated job if you quit that job or get fired from that job yet to go. I think there's 0% chance you know pinky and I think he talked about it state of the union didn't talk about a lot of things. Talk about label China currency manipulator taught you know I mean we can go down the list now he's talked about an awful lot of things I focus more on what he's actually doing. And there's nothing that he's done to this point that suggests that's a realist weird we get the 600000 workers that are needed. I'd like to see Tucker have more children now I don't want to myself but I'd like to see Tucker have more children one value c'mon. Stepping up both India need to make I'm not I'm not really among the market for kids right now you know no well. See if there's a 60 coming insane pay the make it look there's a lot of validity to that I mean he's the he's got to be. At some point there's a wage that you pay. But then it gets to the point can you afford to build that new world can afford to build that new to look in Newport to build a new hospital in that's the problem special you look in and around urban areas it's expensive enough to build in those areas anyways when you factor in land acquisition cost you look at all of a sudden your adding in additional Leo 1015%. Expense there. It adds up quickly now. Now on just a little bit of information that we didn't cover from the jobs report on Friday. Before it's as three says they're not looking hard enough. Well I I can tell you I disagree with you for three. The I talked to guys that are running these companies and they're motivated truck because they can make more profit if they take on the east jobs in their tell me. I'm turning down work it's killing me. I'm turning down work because I can't find it as an ambassador is that what you paid for wages. 25 to 3540 bucks an hour and they can't find it and in the other thing is. The the vast majority of people right now war unemployed and unemployed because they can beat good workers there's obviously still some out there that are still just looking for the right job and target employees but I'll tell you if you try to hire right now. I see and I talked to people who were in trucking I talked to people who were construction is say look I'll get a guy who shows that two days in the third dam higher and he's got to get easier cultural landscape you know talk to anybody in the landscaping does that that is. Very compact talked to guys you today who is running offense and company's industrial fencing company and you know saying look at all these projects I wanna do I hire guys that worked for week and a half and then they just stop showing up see these are guys though. Better trumps cronies and they're going to the president there saying hey we've got labor shortages we are not going to be able to meet our objectives if you don't give us some and some help. You've gotta you gotta do something just because again this this is not just a regional issue you're seeing this across the board. On a national of the company that you were talking about was an awareness in where half plus yeah there. Is is it's it's. I don't know at what point you reach the tipping point. But he in in my conversations. I can tell you it's it's out there and try to get work done to you know try try calling out for it in NC that would the push yet six weeks now. On jobs report is some data that we got today that would lead us to believe based on what our studies. That you're gonna get a fed hike in June you have that doctor needlessly yeah hopefully what he shows a likelihood for rate hike in June Ridnour to 83%. Chance okay. A month ago we are at 67%. A week ago 67%. In on Friday 78% chance of a hike in June so worked 83%. Pretty much the only way we don't get a hike in June right now is if the jobs report for May is just a complete disaster which I don't think it's going to put how to that you raise rates will lose GDP point seven. Yeah look it's keeping my digital growth. Well first quarter first of all is always a crap equal bachus who didn't give me your projection annualized GDP 2072%. Dip to. And I guess the the argument not normally. In eighth and a GDP. Environment where it's 2% you would never raise rates as perfect. It that would be motivation ten years to go to reduce rates of GDP was only 2% twenty years ago. They Vizio got to reduce rates. Now they're saying GDP's 2% got to raise rate. So remember that the Fed their mandate is not produce growth the Fed is mandated to control two things employment. And inflation can Boca where's the inflation inflation is happening right now but you can absolutely make a case that we are full point right now. He stood and use it to people who just talk about how there's no construction workers and it's pretty good you know. Again historically you six even in the best economy that we had if you go back and take a look at the numbers from 1999 and 2000. The six got down to around 77 and a half percent that's about as well as he gets about what was it's gonna get at the rate that we're going if it's that six months maybe sooner. You know like it it's gonna hit that within the next six to nine months you are pretty much at full employment right now go out and anyone who says I can't find a job you're not looking. It might not be the job you want Aaliyah. But if if you say you can't find a job right now you're not looking to IC again. I go by. You know your your McDonald's and everything on the highway that say look fourteen dollars and ours are starting wage I see this out there know what can hiring. When we come back will be talking about a start up with the new drug that'll help you with feeling lost and we'll have pretty for you from our insurer match stock on students. Might my point is in in all of trying to convey is that there are a lot of people. That are not working in the trades and I'm talking of your generation of her that are not working in the trades because their parents guided them in a different direction to. There's there's no doubt about it that's something that we saw. And what's interesting is that they tend to think that those kinds of things. The pendulum is kind of swung too far away from the trades now and I feel like we're getting to the point where to go to start swinging back as. But the wages will do that the wages will do as well as. When this next generation starts having kids they won't have seen the same thing we gonna have you know it's gonna happen is you're gonna have somebody who's working. What's up an idea architecture. I'm an idea of and that's our patriots yes no. We're having a lot of people saying hey Lou we're looking to hire. We've worked with trying to find people 25 bucks an hour and by right I'm having a lot of people say sure. Why don't we. Start the segment where if you're an employer. In your looking for workers. Will put the it will put the word out an option. Kind of a community service I just match because we have one guy who's working as a truck driver right he's making sixty bucks an hour. And he's saying hey tell me more about that 25 dollar an hour treat her parents got a lot of pest control guy says yeah and I will do for that new job which should be the which should the minimum wage the that we insist on it in or if we're due for freeware and charging. For the job requirement won't that be the wage yeah point 525. It so if you have a job that pays 25 dollars an hour. Go to our website may be sets up an apocalypse financial exchange shows dot com if you have a job that pays 25 dollars an hour. Will promote that job for for how about that. The idea that works and a cynical that's a let. That helps the that it helps the employer into it can even do we can have that simpler called into the show that guy that was look at for the workers right yet how many. Employers to we have looking for work seminary now. Easily and uttered span of two minutes your job after the show is to go through those contact those guys it's going to be 25 an hour. It's not 25 and are not in human freer. It's a good wage at fifty grand if he does and here now still at night so that's that's the the home side with staples opted. I staples is trying to while rebrand their business right now what they're doing. They are unveiling a new marketing campaign that as opposed to being focused on their retail stores. They're trying to promote their odd delivery right now and it in this market compete better with Amazon I think it's Smart I think it makes cents. And I and they have the infrastructure to do well in the already do what they already do this and just they haven't publicized it well they've gone after the big companies they've gone after in the the only the fortune 500 marketplace yup they do all the work for. You know you list the big companies that an ExxonMobil you go down the list and they're that's called Terrell on 90% of that business. But they're trying to do this with the us and smaller and mid size companies now. And I think it's the right move for them. I think they need to continue getting leaner as far as the retail business and and I think it makes an awful lot of sense for them to focus more on this on line market. Shark's gonna have to do. Due to problems to the suburbs Tucker. What's that well cart would you want for those of us who wins what. After you after you've convinced me to get married now buy a house and eventually have kids tell me the problems after the fact of what I'm doing you can get food delivery. I know that I Tucker you lately and I've lived in the suburbs all right and it's not like if you live in the city. They're there like how many restaurants could you order delivery from now hundred. Two under it's probably somewhere around 4500 yeah yeah. Now you moved to the suburbs. Can't get at least in the us the restaurant industry and what I think I'm gonna do isn't gonna find the latest small studio apartment that I can use flop house for deliveries and and that way whenever I have a delivery. I can just go into this little studio apartment and ball I'll try to get something like 300 bucks a month and that's a no win what now we have to do that. That's stupid act can't give up delivery that you're gonna I can't do the suburbs I'm telling you the delivery options for food or deals off. It's the kind of suck don't they talk about moving you get pizza. I don't realize that's pretty quick with them yet. That's his Chinese food. But I also think it's easier if you want to go out there may be like five how many restaurants he would deliver its a lot you right to do not have to outer in the suburbs OK just because tried to take out in the city. Just trying to get around if you go to a place to miles away and my take you half an hour each way. This true warning you it's a sacrifice you're gonna have to make in order to move to the suburbs it's at the same delivery up now it's on I I think they'll be OK and obviously. We don't do delivery an awful you know we're not hue like I I I don't either I probably do maybe once or twice a month the most all of that out via in the apple quickly because most nights and then it will go out late one night a week or something like that so I would get delivery that was available in those good. And I would get to I'd like to 1090% of the time each week I cook. And that's good that's a assailant excitement about him. Up next we're gonna review a vehicle. Ted Stevens from CNET Roche has been talked to us about the 2017. Should be asked asked. And of course we'll have the answer to a trivia question for mark sure match that comes to stroke. Talk a little bit about what this car is now your overall thoughts are. This is basically ship these big big kind of performed brute and we're like a portal Camaro a big V8 import or comfortable car. To believe that you can now recently you know get comfortable in the cruises to long Mountain View on two or you know engage you know maybe a little bit of a street I drag racing if you want to as well. I've got so look but it really great sound announced its cover a couple of but cart I'm sad to say. This going away after this Motley of the of the last year the should be what is it they just not finding strong enough demands. But it's not yet that that's part of Richard apparently feeling that well here in the US but the bigger problem is this is actually read bad version. Of an Australian carpal Holden commodore basically. A big muscle car made in Australia. Chevy is between the importing those rebounds and mentoring and chilies but old unfortunately is going to stop us operatives Mac or who's been known before and so. With the source of the cargo in the way actually important that we have. A means of produce this carnage on so there is going to ultimately the model portion how many do they make per year. I would have been very very limited number are probably 2000 imported to the US so I'm really not exactly big toe has been available in the US is I think we're thirteen and fourteen so going on about 45 years now at this point. You know we've been that you shall put them pretty rare car and the potentially future collector's item to you know that's us and ask you about his equally well yet has yet to pay fifty grand violence. As good that there are about 48 grandin is moving not that many options add to it at this point over the past couple of years chevys and adding more and more standard equipment to the arts over the Dion and special colors there about an orange for example that's only available but here are about ordered art at all. But I that it's pretty much uploaded right out of the dealership the talent and to actually get away about the grand and I'm pretty sure there are some incentive going on his car to. Again did not set up some limits on that that well. Once this is gone timid this I am looking at the specs on it looks like it has a VA. How many VA sedans are there left on the US market at this point. The other just aren't that many unfortunately this was using the the last generation that Corvette BA so that for making quantity horsepower costly a little bit low for six point two mediate these days and the metallic CDS we can still get with so much from the but the Corbett motors and in a few other cars well. A Dodge Challenger and charger answer to use BA too but beyond that just about everything else is down to a twin Turbo V6 is. Or even in some cases in line or a look at the chart is super charge to get the same amount of power. I was certainly didn't quit at that view from that would come to look. So if I'm going out and buying one of these you've become the top three feature as well as the top three things that are lacking right now. I don't believe that motor is still one of the best he could even though for fifteen horsepower is not that great prominent in this scientists assume that that's gotta love it also has cities and I need to re illogical suspension which is. A pretty intimate same suspension can be a change depending upon what we won forty way. Or more comfortable way in nature it is a really nice relaxing would be really comfortable seat and a lot of room here on the negative side mileage is definitely a problem. I'd rate in the low twenties we struggled the media about sixteen not on this. You wanna budget a little bit extra for gas that doesn't force me to get aghast that attack well what is a bit of a challenge. And ultimately it is a little bit anonymous what you know some people that that's a good thing but if you wanna car this is in and out the you know that the ball back to bite. Maybe it will be the car. Should be of any plans to while. Have anything else feel this hole in its line up after this they pretty much gonna leave it open just because they're not selling an off. The public is probably going to stay open Dodgers get McConnell owning this segment would Johnson charter at this point in other delinquent loans that are not so I think that probably for now anyway we're gonna see this stay open for a little while. In the with a market going right now probably adding another high performance variant of the Sudan maybe now we'll allow them. But on the collect got a saying the seat yet that is pretty good job of adding this net the broader in. So maybe that might become netbook. Very good Tim thank you for joining us today. Are couple of Tim Stevens with CNET roadshow talking about the 2017. Ship BS as as he mentioned. This is the last year that they are going to be producing that car. To get them all weekend 3000 album. So I don't know that it's gonna you know if he said 300. You might say OK they become a collector's item and 3000 still you know let's get you have to wait 2030 years for to have any yeah and in this still nothing that really stands out you know it with the car it's not the arguments in the styling is kind of pedestrian I'd rather have a Camaro. Rather Corvette Corbett to view the new ones I don't those phenomenal colors high volume he there. Probably one of the more attractive vehicles on the road today in the united via the via a choice for Corvette vs corvettes an extra 8000. Now corporate the what you get for the price with a Corvette is unbelievable. It's the it's a terrific car. AT&T CEO says eight corporate tax cut would mean thousands more jobs for hard hat workers. And I know sit AT&T would have to add 7000 jobs execute on every one billion dollars of capital investments. And I'll I'll believe it when I see it again these are companies that have you know between AT&T Verizon and Comcast. They spend money only because they have to they they very rarely go out. And undertake new projects you know just kind of deal on a whim just as the capital costs are so expensive. I just. I don't know fight quite by that they were beat that much extra. Money floating around for the mere. There might be but I just I'm skeptical on and I'll tell you shame of it is eight years ago we can use all these jobs right these mighty big about where we were. From an unemployment stamp on yet use six it was run in 15% there's never time to do it it was 2009 now and and we get it done massive infrastructure at the time and we did we drop the ball as a country. The Dow is down 45 point oil prices are up 22 cents a barrel at 4644 golds twelve when he and outs. In the S&P down three point struck exotic Tucker Selma. And Barry Armstrong from our insurer matched up on studios.
