WRKO GOP Senate Debate: Gabriel Gomez and Mike Sullivan (Part 2)
Apr 8, 2013|
The debate continues as Gomez and Sullivan ask each other questions they would like to have answered. Gomez poses a question about term limits, while Sullivan goes back to the letter Gomez wrote in support of Obama. They both give their final pitch on why they should be the one to represent the Republican Party on the ballot, with Gomez stressing that he's 'one of you' and Sullivan saying that he's someone who has been tested. There was also a heated back-and-forth between the candidates as time ran out on the debate.

Gomez who is a it was -- venture capitalist investment banker and -- -- navy veteran navy seal and a grudge with the US Naval Academy. I just wanted to get a question before we let you guys go. This is for both of you would either of you support the US military confiscating personal firearms of US citizens afforded by the president. No wake -- says no capsule and out here and honest. OK go forward Gabriel last were questioned sure I I think as a personal question. Would you be in favor. Turn on it's as -- your priorities -- to discourage -- reappear turn on us now he's. -- self imposed a term limits have always believed in it I think it's good to have stuff. Do turn over in certain known positions I think lifelong. Service sun -- position while she could be a I'm committed challenging and problematic for people -- self imposed term limits -- a year essential that you wouldn't go down or try to make it a yeah. But he is so unrealistic to expect a constitutional amendment consider the last time the congress passed a constitutional amendment and term effect in themselves to about 200 years so I'd probably spent a lot of my time. Focusing on some real important issues particularly on fiscal issues. He added that people -- on the kitchen table most concerned about. Mike asked him I want you back -- letter I mean I'm here because. -- I would just say that on that on that question here on eternal it's obviously got better if we got to focus on the on the economy economy economy the one of the reasons that were in the situation rent. If he's got people living in politics are far too long that I'd taken the same attitude that -- these are too hard. This the hills to -- It's -- -- challenge to do. How -- quite frankly we -- Friday throughout somewhere in the video of the live the American dream and I wouldn't have done all things that I had opportunity so to have to take the attitude that this is too hard to do. I I've just. I first likely disagree and I'd say that that's one of the things we need to focus on down ACL in the economy because we need to get people. They cannot could spend. A good part of their career in politics that we have right now well on some stimulate -- -- paid political consultants who -- that he -- Michael filibuster every now looks like every state but we hit it to make it up and talk about some of the issues that's a difference right here I don't commit urinating prepared I did speak from the heart I just look regularly -- it. Any I don't have any -- the -- with the same Michael everything that I sent in public everything that's been on record everything has been on my website. Does your mind you do mine in my don't -- he asked me to ask you about the letter every Demetriou Cuba palladium would change the subject. So I -- the letter your. -- -- essentially says I support the president didn't really support the positions of President Obama has taken on. Gun control. Do you still stand by that statement you gave the Deval Patrick what do you say different words instead of saying full support now. I I agree do -- you I'm a firm believer in the second and I just a simple question do you still. Could take deposition you I don't agree with all the positions on -- you know and I don't support of gun positions -- president is tennis that -- I'm not a lawyer you know I -- somebody could have worded carefully and headed for the same meaning that I meant to have -- any -- the worst support. Some people -- -- turnovers all encompassing -- I meant by the word support additions or is that he's that I support the positions that the President Obama has taken on gun control Michael you know I don't support the assault weapon ban bundle -- now you know also that I don't -- -- -- got a number around and high capacity and actually imagine the guy police report. I noticed I do you support closing the gasoline multi -- well as the gun. Show loophole by the way there are many states -- -- -- death -- isn't the -- and again shall what do you remember explain what it else what is the gun show loophole there are certain states out there where you can go into against self. And by weapon without a background check. What's really secondary market it's not begun showing potential loophole his son is not a new -- I know that may be some New York. -- political consultants that told you talk about Michael let's show some respect -- I don't have any political consumes that it did he knew I am I don't lock in the meetings or debates -- notes. Well watch my letter does feel I was I remember writing a letter now -- toll commuter talk to -- a letter solar boat but I think that we should they said they would. The positions of President Obama has taken on immigration reform do you still stand by that statement you gave to governor I mean you ask Governor Patrick for the job. And we asked them for the job Gabriel you essentially told him -- you supported the president on gun control. Can you supported -- president on immigration reform. Now you -- to telling people that you don't support the president most to issue some just yesterday. Do you do you stand by would you say it to the governor when he asked him to give you the job a few weeks ago. I'm not sure of which were clear I can be felt letter was written by me telling me and I am proud I raise my hand and volunteered. And I want to served this Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It wasn't written by a political person it was a written by consultant who wasn't written by somebody through political lens or anything like -- Michael I wrote that letter. And I am proud of that letter now with somebody written it with -- different experience in the political stick your respect -- proud of it. But I mean you're probably just say you were for a that you support the do you support what we're -- well we ask you questions were what is the -- thoughtful leadership of club and -- Patrick what is it what can you give me an example the well. He's he's our governor I was writing a letter to him. When I've used different words in retrospect yeah I would use different words in retrospect but we can use can use like one thing that was -- it's all the -- for what he's done. As a setup already used or for worse than that so many answers no I would views differ works out okay your turn Gabriel. I'm -- I'm not I'm here today to try to denigrate somebody from our own party Alex. I'm happy to talk about the issues but I'm not here to to put somebody on the spot I had a chance if you had during the first debate and as you saw I -- Thought they would like going around I know are already okay I'll ask up quite a question I got your text or said. Did you support -- Schumer when he was up pushing gun control legislation in New York absolutely not know of an average of. Have been a big supporter. -- -- a Second Amendment going back in my early days serving in the Massachusetts. House of Representatives say but I actually was opposed the original assault weapons -- this is not something that has come to me recently. You know between the time a -- Here between January of 2013. And the time that I announced. -- -- always been a big supporter of the Second Amendment did the did when you were up for a the permanent Joba by ATF director did the NRA support you. Hippie generation did the I had your support that they should they may not help you with some of the Democrats. So they quietly supporting me reiterate and I hit -- great relationship when I served as the director of ATF. And it Gabriel. You made you -- You made a lot of money in the last four years I think that's great he made a lot of money how can you how come someone in your income range you made. He made he made 3.2 million in the last nine years you made eight point eight million of them I was eleven to ten years I think ten years and you may want how much to 3.2 million continues you mate you made eight point eight million in in enough for years does that does that qualify you war does it could take two away from the average person that made them much -- -- tell you sort of sound like a darker here that I should be ashamed of my success I'm just asking you cannot get here. I am the same person I was right girl on the same person who didn't learn English until he was a kid going to school on the same person that earned. Everything he's done his life every single accomplish I had my life and I'm proud of it -- -- and -- for my success I earn my way to the Naval Academy I earn my pilot always a goal I earn my navy seal trident and I earn my way into power Francisco and I've earned. Having him. Very successful business private sector career I'm not ashamed at all. I -- I'm exactly what the American dream is all about in the reason I'm running tally. He's I want everybody -- the same chance that I have now as a kid I want to make sure that my kids have a chance the American dream and wanna make sure that urban useless in that their kids have a chance American -- that's not gonna be ashamed. To sit there and think that because I've been successful -- me money disqualifies me. -- makes you were called by Ashley not what Juli isn't on this campaign. What we've been very successful raising money out and the fact is we had access the same people. And we had a it was a rerun money are you gonna spend I've decided on -- million. I'm decide on the idea. Could be a -- that much is a million now know not a million that. Did Markey says that is a bit to say here and say that because I've been successful. And that -- what I mean again a lot of it I am I am who. I I'm the American dream how everybody. I want my kids -- the -- chance they may have a different American dream but everybody out there I want to make sure that their kids and their kids have a chance at the American dream now there's nothing that I've done ever been seen and actually I'm proud that earned it. Everything. Well it. Listen I was born here in the in the city of Boston then the cells in the Boston. Started my professional career on the factory floor of the joint company. You sure why we work I did walk tour acknowledged they drove the world can -- in the makeshift you know sometimes I put myself follow through school -- A lot of has some great blessings during the course of my life and the thing that I'm most fearful about. -- -- -- things that we knew my parents dreamed about for me are going to be available for the next generation so that's a reason why I'm running for United States senate. Cape Wind. Thumbs up or thumbs down you know I have some real problems with regards to the other way that they calculate the benefits of like Cape -- it seems like it's pretty far down the path -- this point in time. -- I'm not sure that it's a good deal with the the very engine your thumbs up or thumbs down I'm not sure to be honest and how we've seen in this is something you should be decided at the local level. In the local community did not have the opportunity to fully participate which I think they. Certainly had the opportunity to pursue whatever and turn him -- thumbs up or thumbs down for Cape Wind is should be at the -- to look a little bit on the service on the upper case and -- against Kate went. Okay let's see here military service and we know your military service your military service I don't have military service million dead and other family members of certain military probably in the big supporter of the in the military in -- To a lot of work with the wounded warriors project when I was an ATF. OK I will say that that is the broadest part my professional career being able to protect and defend the constitution United States and the serving overseas. -- a lot of friends that are in the military that are out there every single day doing ops all over the world make sure that we can actually be on his radio show and have productive discussion. Marla says you both say you support the Second Amendment other any articles. In the bill of rights should do not support. -- What do you think of Michelle -- could Celek the the would be the killer the white strangler who's gonna get a sex change operation not actually post them on the record of being opposed to that that so that's so rages. I. Say we agree on a lot of things. Okay let's see what else we got here okay how about now do you what do you support you I wanna ask you what one more time Gabriel earlier will run out of time. Bold and thoughtful leadership. Yourself it can you give me one example. Kelly. And I say I -- is an eighty guy OK I didn't write this from a political lens I don't know how much -- clear I can be climatic career politician. I'm not a a not have been politics -- ran five times have been a policy since 1990 well I get a Bill Murray drilling on the point is is that. I don't look at these were political as I don't have political -- I don't -- and things written notes and have to have something in front -- like -- -- talk about I speak from the heart how we. Just like everybody else I'm one of them I speak from the heart and I'm proud to be who I am. Well we're loose from the first time hiring Gabriel -- last time I served as the director of ATF. When I said I meant tonight and hide around the fact that. You may -- I didn't put the right words in the when you say -- with you said they supported something that means something to make and it should mean something Q as well. So imagine Governor Deval Patrick when he read -- she believed you when you told him. And they supported President Obama and they supported president Obama's policies on gun control in immigration. He didn't think that that somehow he there was a new definition of support. Depending on when you definition news I went very clear I don't -- apple is not you know Harvard Business School graduate you -- words mean something. Am very proud of my service and in my career and I know exactly what I meant that letter as I say it. Somebody would maybe a lawyer background literate and if I don't think so I think what your high school graduate course mostly your Harvard Business School graduate numerous words mean the same -- -- -- -- -- governor. The president says your success is not yours do you agree. -- My -- I've earned everything that I've done. I got a lot of opportunities and that's the key point we need to make sure that everybody else has the same opportunities come by and I guarantee that at the same opportunities have the same chance at success that I have what you like definitely disagree with the president okay thirty seconds each thirty seconds for you start up with -- -- Mr. Gomez -- won't -- production and I'm one of -- I L I agree opportunities I thought Steve once was one of I think that the go ahead but he's like -- I'm one of you what I had a great -- a lot of good opportunities and I've earned everything I've done in my career. Don't wanna serve -- at the same opportunity. If we continue on the same path we're not gonna have -- our -- for our kids and our kids' generation that's what we can't afford same send people that are singular down the right now presenting at the same thing we have right now. But I say that ring before is hovering military man's discipline. A follow sensitivity and a businessman has experienced that in DC and is very unique it's exactly when he got in DC right now someone who has actually fresh fresh perspectives. And we'll bring change down to DC tussle we need we need change we -- -- on the same Pat O'Brien right now. Mike I think you need some media news contested in somebody who can be trusted internally -- -- the opportunity to test it and number different ways to back in my. Private sector days at the Gillette company to the work I -- is a -- represented at the work they do in terms of communities improving the quality of life and people are. -- district attorney who work -- dune national security level. In terms of the work of the US attorney's office. -- investigate me in the Richard Reid the shoe bomb case which was an international terrorism organization. And the other were kitty TF when you wanna have. People that you can trust that they say what they mean they do with you gonna say. OK I appreciate you guys commit for the mile debate absurd and Winslow couldn't be here but. Things just -- -- now live I may end up he real. Michael Holland asking just don't -- on their part our own hathead I don't know how are tougher to get on to say -- -- -- put. We're gonna go ahead and respond well I didn't hide behind -- Gabriel. You know what if I could get a ticket two weeks only tonight's new UN might not -- to week that trust that's not tested and trust the world and listen in now I know you wonder. He's taking headphones off and walking away plumber here for a -- they are not saying we can continue this after the those of you guys are gonna say what I Dixie two weeks now there's simply no assurance that the I don't there's a very simple test and that's how we car.
